I can understand one thing - a sports car with an auto just doesn't feel the same to me, in terms of fun. That includes DSG gearboxes (with an exception for track work). If I'm out for a drive, I want to row my own...

i currently own a 2008 m3 with a 7 speed dual clutch tranny it is one of the best ive ever driven (far superior to any manual) or owned and i owned quite a few cars ,,,, so my next purchase after i sell my beater..haha 350z will most likely be a 7 speed auto 370....

Oh, the dreaded Manual vs Automatic discussion rears it's ugly head again.

Look, its quite simple. It's all in how you view the car.

I look at the 370z and see a upper mid-end luxury/sports car. When I want to enjoy my surroundings and take it easy, it stays in automatic and I let my 7 speed do all the work. When I see some curves up ahead and want to scare the crap out of my passenger, I slide it into manual and have a blast.

Yeah, everyone somehow thinks it's cooler to have a manual and thats fine, whatever makes you feel better. I've owned manuals and yeah, it's a little more fun sometimes but you never have the choice to just relax and enjoy the car without shifting every 5 seconds.

Like I said, it's all in how you view the car. If you want a full on sports car go with the manual. If you want a full on sports car and want to save your right arm from exhaustion, go with the auto. It's the same exact car, just a different experience. It's actually faster in a straight line, but thats a different conversation.

Plus, the wife wants to drive it and if I got the manual we wouldn't be having this conversation right now because I wouldn't own a Z. lol.

I drove the dealers 7At and 6 speed, both on sports models and had a blast with both. For me, the 7At is the best of both worlds and is probably faster overall than the manual. It would be interesting to see some times in comparable models with only the tranny being the difference. VIVA la difference.

I do not want to start a manual versus automatic flame. They are both great trannies.

Not really. The only risk is in blowing out your torque converter, which being filled with fluid, is not friction-based as in a manual clutch. You can't wear out fluid, but being too agressive could overpressurize the tc, causing internal damage and/or blown gaskets. It would take an awful lot of abuse to do this.This is also why hydrualic autos tend to be more durable and handle more power.

Wear and tear is a concern for the 6MT clutch, not so much with the 7AT.

It's quoted right in this review:

There's no way the 7AT is faster than a 6MT.

There's no way the 7AT is faster than a 6MT.

They have only driven the 7AT version. For 6MT time, they are just assuming (or using Motortrends time 4.7s). If Jalopnik were to given a 6MT car, we are not sure if they can launch 4.7S like the motortrend. There are too many variables (driver's skill, land elevation, temperature etc) involved. You have to understand, even with 6MT transmission, Motortrend, edmunds, road and track, car & driver magazine, TopGear magazine - they all had different 0 to 60 times! It varied from 4.7 to 5.2.
