Falken Tire Video, 370Z vs 5.0 'Stang

Call it a tire comparo or a Z vs 'Stang comparo. Either way, it's a fun video.

I'll post the first inflammatory comment. A 370Z COUPE would have won...

pretty cool.

christian370z 04-23-2011 10:34 PM

Z no win means me no care. :)

I definitely agree, I wish they used a coupe but it still did well all things considered.

Bleek 04-23-2011 11:05 PM

Regardless of price, how new the car is, etc... v8 vs v6 N/A -- the v8 should win. :stirthepot:

maybe in a straight line that is a good rule of thumb. for N/A

370zproject 04-24-2011 03:38 AM

the fact that the heaviest z did that well vs the stang i say the z wins :)

nice vid find

jaedub 04-24-2011 05:15 AM

and people say 5.0 is better than 370z on track......pshhh

kenchan 04-24-2011 06:54 AM

Second inflammatory comment.... falken sucks.

Not so much people "saying" it, just every single test that has been done.

Inflammatory as it is, I still chuckle that the 370 NISMO's best lap time around VIR was only 1/2 a second ahead of a V6 mustang that bounced off it's 114mph rev-limiter for over a dozen seconds on the straights. It's time to give the mustang it's due. It's no sports car, but it is starting to turn very un-ponycar like numbers.

Ironically though, the Mustang was Ford's answer to Chevy's Corvette. Then Chevy countered with the Camaro to compete with the 2+2 design. Woefully for Ford, the Mustang has been lagging behind the 'Vette's performance for decades, and even a base Grand Sport can trounce a GT500. It'll be interesting to see where the ZL1 Camaro falls in the mix.

I'll never "pay dues" to a car that half of my city drives

That's the old GT500. The 2011 beats the Grand Sport now on track times at same raceways though I haven't seen a direct comarision yet. They did by dropping 100 lbs. over the front wheels when they switched to an aluminum block in 2011. Handling supposidly is night and day over the 2010.

1 sec not bad for a 80 HP deficit

can we instead just hate all the love??

but, the mustang has come along ways.. a long long long long ways. In fact FORD itself is making big strides which the other US companies can't seem to make.

Actually, 0.48 second (1:25.89 vs 1:26.37) for the Z roadster, which probably means at least a tie for the 5.0 vs. Z coupe.

sonic370 04-24-2011 06:49 PM

I can't believe i'm saying this but the mustang has come a long way in the past
couple of years. but in mho it will always be considered a muscle/pony car....

it has a back seat nuff said... if i was held at gun point i would take the camaro.

but for styling, sex appeal and drop dead good looks you got to give it up to the 370................................ in it's price range...

kudos to those guys at the blue oval for what they are doing

spearfish25 04-24-2011 09:00 PM

Wait, so the Laguna Seca edition of the Boss 302 deletes the back seats and puts in a roll cage. So it's not a pony car anymore? Now it's a sports car? :stirthepot:

No roll cage on the LS, just some extra bracing.

all we need to know is the z is the best due to the fact its less powerfull... give it 400 hp and it will own the gt

AlphaSnacks 04-25-2011 07:28 AM

It doesn't need 400HP. The coupe would've done the job: 250lbs lighter, faster, and much better handling than the convertible. Shame they used the convertible, even though it's totally not the point of this comparison anyways. Hehe.

So, my G20 is better than the 370Z, then, because it has less power, no?

if they would have used a coupe and stick, i bet it would have been a tie...i always wondered why they choose a vert auto:ugh2:

m4a1mustang 04-25-2011 08:45 AM

It always made me mad that the brochure for the 2009 Z said the automatic was for enthusiasts while the manual was for perfectionists. It should be the other way around. Enthusiasts shift their own gears! :stirthepot:

From a marketing viewpoint, it's stupid of Nissan to imply that either model is not "perfect" or that either model is not for an "enthusiast". Boneheaded stupid, actually.

Lost in translation, perhaps.

shadoquad 04-25-2011 12:32 PM

That vid's pretty old and has been posted before. The point of the vid was to compare tires, not cars.

If it was a car comparo, I'd expect there to be a coupe, possibly a nismo, representing the Z.

But, since it's a marketing vid for tires, so what.

Usually, whatever press car is available to use they take.

I don't think you'd want to handicap the Z like that - definitely should be an auto coupe :) :stirthepot:

11Thumper 04-25-2011 08:03 PM

So they left the stickers on the tires when determining lap time improvements on a track? :p

Thats where the term "sticker tires" comes from. :) they wear off after a few turns.

themann1984 04-25-2011 08:20 PM

That video was worthless! They didn't give the variance of the lap times! How do we know if the difference in lap times was statistically significant or simply random noise?

The 370Z is pure sex! It is hot, loud, and rough!

I know... ;)

Just seems bad taste to be so lazy as to not to remove the stickers that will eventually become trash on a closed course. Minimal yes, but at the extreme everything counts.

Perhaps, but I figure the stickers will just grind away to a very fine dust... no harm no foul. But now we're just splitting atoms. :icon17:
