Ridiculous start/stop button question...

Something just occurred to me as I sat in the Z today to start her up. When I start the car I push in and hold the button until the engine starts. However when I turn the car off, I just push the button without keeping it depressed. Anyone else do this? I have no idea why I do this. Maybe it's a throwback conditioned action to turning an actual key and making sure the engine fires up?

On a side note, I STILL always catch myself letting the clutch out slowly completely defeating the purpose of my SRM. Lol... I guess old habits die hard. (even though I was heal/toeing in my Evo before this car)

Anyway...

Jeffblue 03-30-2011 09:00 PM

i just tap the button when i start the car. Then again almost every car i've ever driven (family members cars, cars i've owned etc) has been push button start nissan so... i'm pretty used to hit haha.

:icon18:

I held the button down for the first few engine cranks, but now I spend that cranking time with other things...like reaching for my shades and getting my tunes on!

Hmmm, you know...I haven't tried dumping the clutch on a downshift yet. Force of habit I suppose from too many years of driving manual trannies.:icon17:

Dude..what're you like <20 yrs old? :icon14:

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I remember driving my Grandparents Buick Regal with the pimpin 8-track (shudder)!

Don't mean to jack your thread OP, but SoCal, do you remember having to push the button to skip tracks, and the (*clunk*) we had to listen to as it switched sides?:rofl2:

Hold briefly when you start and turn off engine---it's that simple.

cfweber 03-30-2011 10:18 PM

fancy stuff

I'd settle for a regular key

I do think the SRM is useful

drdre8424 03-30-2011 10:26 PM

i dont get your question...
brake, push button, engine starts
push button, engine turns off
while engine is on, tap twice quickly goes to ACC

Suhweeet!

(for real. Quad sounded awesome.)

happytheman 03-30-2011 10:29 PM

Oooh, I was unaware of the double-tap trick! I've bee kinda wondering about how best to get to ACC quickly!

slongholio 03-31-2011 02:02 AM

haha, I thought you had to hold it down. i'll try it tomorrow just pushing and realsing it.

wdkwang 03-31-2011 02:28 AM

ive been driving cars that use keys to start since i was 17 including my last car but ever since i got used to the z, ive been embarassing myself reaching for a nonexistent push start button on my friends' and parents' cars, with the exception of my old car before i sold it cause it was a matter of muscle memory and familiarity if that makes sense

KillerBee370 03-31-2011 02:31 AM

:icon14:Ahh well.. I guess it's just me.

but really, i used to hold it down as well during the first month. I thought I had to hold it till it started up. Now i just tap without holding.

Chan Chee Hoe 03-31-2011 06:30 AM

Do not need to press & hold, just depress the brake, press & release, the car will start itself.

This. Im always looking for a start button to push when I get in other cars now, freakin muscle memory! I also find myself with my right hand on the shifter of automatic cars out of habit.

I too find myself doing this in my new Sequoia (standard key ignition) since both my other cars are push button (Z and Jag XF). A push button is just so much more efficient IMO.

when you turn a key type ignition, all it does is rotate the lock so that it pushes a button in the switch... keyless start is just eliminating the key itself (which is a good thing). the keys have been trasmitting to the cars for 20 years now, that's nothing new, why not have keyless?

also of note: higher end cars have not required the operator to hold the key in ignition position (usually position #4 just past "ON") for a while. my step mom's last car was a 2000 BMW 740iL and all you had to do was just tap it into ignition and let go and the car would hold the starter circuit until it had fully started.

I'm 23....

i learned to drive on my mom's 2002 Lincoln LS v8 (key)
my 'first' car was the last 4 months of my dads '05 lincoln LS v8 (Key)
After my mom's lincoln she leased an 05 m35x (push button)
after my dad's lincoln he bought a 2008 g35x (push button)
after my dad's lincoln i bought a 2008 altima coupe (push button)
after my mom's m35x she leased a 2009 g37x (push button)
after i got bored of my 2008 altima coupe i bought the 370z (push button)
3 weeks ago i bought a 1994 300zx twin turbo.... (push button... just kidding)

so as you can see, most of my driving has been done on push button start nissans.

I press the button for as long as it needs to be pressed, which isn't very long. tapping the button as long as the clutch is depressed is enough to start the car.

I'm sure there's a failsafe, but can the push button shut down the car while your driving? What if you had to shut it off because of a stuck accellerator?

I'm guessing you would have to hold it down for a few seconds to shut it off. Not exactly something I want to try, just curious.

That's an interesting question. I'm kinda curious what would happen.

my friend has pushed the button in his lexus IS250 while driving and it doesn't do anything.

TypeOne 03-31-2011 03:45 PM

I thought you had to hold the button down for like the first 2 weeks I had my car. (I've never had a car with push button start.)

Then I touched it once and it came on... I was like... hell yea!

I wuz noobz

^^^

I tried pushing the button while driving and it doesn't shut off. I don't know about holding it... but you can push it all you want and nothing should happen.

srbrubak 03-31-2011 04:06 PM

I have to admit I probably push the start/stop button longer than needed. I push and hold until ON lights up and then let go. Stopping just requires a quick tap.

Hope your not reaching for a shift lever mounted on the steering column! I drove one of those in high school back in the early 60's!

yea i don't think that it does anything while driving, but i definitely wouldn't try it. if you have a stuck accelerator, take the car out of gear and pull over

Correct me if I'm wrong, but think that way back when, to start the car, you pulled out the choke lever, turned the key on and pressed the starter button mounted on the dash. My point is that the push button starting is not totally brand new. It was also done in the '30's and '40's.

he treats the car like **** because its a lease. he turns it on and revs the engine to 5k to warm it up in winter. so dumb, makes me angry.

I believe that the red GT-R button should be standard in the Z for in the case of an emergency it will standout as the logical button to push from the years of psychological norms we have been indoctrinated with throughout life.

I've been raised to believe that pushing red buttons result in missile launches (against commies).
