The truck was probably full of raw materials for making meth and the drivers probably stoned. very exposive. Glad you survived.

NyCSnEaK 02-20-2011 05:37 PM

Condolences to the families of the deceased. OP I'm glad you made it out safe with no permanent disabilities. My prayers for a speedy recovery.

christian370z 02-20-2011 06:44 PM

I know that there is no conclusive evidence on the reasons behind the truck driver losing control, but is there a possibility the driver was looking down at something like a phone and not seeing you until it was too late?

Gunzero 02-20-2011 06:56 PM

oh no :(

Trebor3 02-20-2011 07:07 PM

WOW... probably the worst accident a forum (on any forum I'm on) member has ever reported back on. You could have EASILY been killed. Go play the lotto !

Have a quick recovery, having pins SUCKSS :/

glad you're ok, sucks people died. BUT, having pins isn't that bad. The worst part is having your leg shrink while it's in a cast, once that comes off looks like you stole someone else's leg lol

Sundown after seeing the pics, glad to see your OK and alive. I know u said things happened really quick, did ur Z go up in flames immediately or did u have a few minutes to get out of the Z and get to safety? im looking at the pics and just am curious, sorry if its to soon to ask. Hope your leg/ankle gets better

rsav 02-20-2011 08:07 PM

Wow! That is definitely a freak accident. Glad to see that you're ok, wish you a speedy recovery.

jaedub 02-20-2011 08:16 PM

glad you and youre wife is okay. Your son mustve been terrified. Hope you get well soon and back here on the forum with your new 370z!

steveg78 02-20-2011 08:16 PM

Sorry to hear about the terrible accident. I have a plate & 7 screws in my ankle from a skiing accident in 2006. They're in there for good (unless I have some complications later)... Let me just tell you that you will be itching to drive so bad and it sucks not being able to drive. I attempted driving and even with an auto it's damn near impossible and dangerous because you cant really flex your ankle and you kinda just stomp on the gas. At least you can shop for a new ride while you're laid up.

best of luck on your recovery

Sad to hear about the loss of the young ones in the truck. Glad you made it out and will be able to replace what you've lost. Get well soon!

It is definitely odd to see how the truck served into your lane even with a median.

holy s#!t - glad you are ok

Definitely not too soon to ask. I think discussing the accident is part of the healing process. Fair warning, though, I just got a shot of dilaudid for pain, so my spelling and gramar may be jacked up.

Anyway, it was just a matter of seconds before the flames started. It went like this : Impact, brief mental check of my own injuries (deep breathes, wiggle fingers and toes, etc), then waited for the airbag smoke to clear. Once the smoke cleared, I saw the flames come up. It was actually his truck that ignited first, not the car. My nose broke his driveshaft, which tore the fuel lines, and ruptured the gas tank.

Update on me: I had my first round of rehab today, which I can honestly say SUCKS!!!. Rehab sucks donkey nuts, actually. It's hard to believe how much just walking hurts. And they saw it'll be 8-12 weeks of this crap. Oh well, the pain reminds me that I'm alive, I guess. Here's a picture of my boot I'll be in for a while.

They still plan on discharging me tomorrow with outpatient rehab follow up. I'll check back in with you guys later.

SmoothZ 02-21-2011 11:31 AM

All rehab sucks but hopefully it makes you new and whole.

ChrisSlicks 02-21-2011 11:47 AM

Too bad it wasn't your left leg, it makes it a lot easier to drive. You can drive with just the left leg but it is uncomfortable reaching all the way over to the gas pedal and with the giant brace on I don't think it will be possible.

Although rehab sucks, it is the most critical part of the healing process and I encourage you to give it 110% and push through the pain. With a strong recovery you may be able to get airborne again.

Wow you mean to tell me you are actually putting weight on it already? I see you got the darth booth as anyone who's broken an ankle/leg knows. When I broke mine it was 6wks no weight bearing after the surgery. Although I think since your leg is pretty much screwed back on, you can stand on it, it's just not advised since the bone is still broken. What type of fracture was yours? Mine was trimalleolar.

StLRedrider 02-21-2011 01:01 PM

Wow, hope you feel better!!!!

Xander117 02-21-2011 01:41 PM

Man really bad wreck glad to see you made it out okay. Heres for hoping for a speedy recovery. Thoughts are with the others that werent so lucky.

Good luck with Rehab, its a biatch on the ankle. They can take their little stretchy bands :gtfo2:

Luckily, mine wasn't the ankle at all. A trimalleolar is a break involving 3 of the supporting ankle bone (2 tibial heads, and the fibular head). That's a nasty, nasty break that takes forever to head right. Mine is actually a comminuted fracture of the tibia and fibular about 3" above the ankle. The orthopod ran a titanium rod from the knee end of the tibia, through the marrow, and anchored it into the ankle end of the tibia with screws and nails. Therefore, it's like I have a semi-titanium bone now, so I can actually support a little weight on it. I move like an old grand-pa, though. Anyone got a pair of tennis balls for my walker? :rofl2:

Getting discharged in few minutes, so I get to sleep in my own bed tonight. Just wanted to say thanks for all the encouraging to words to a stranger that only had a car in common with all of you. That's the thing about these forums. You instantly have a bond with people you may or may not ever meet.

Again, thanks for encouraging me during my hospitalization and I'll post some rehab updates, x-rays, etc in this thread.

And when I'm back to :driving: of course!

Sibze 02-22-2011 02:45 PM

Congrats

And here's the x-rays. Pre- and post-op.

I'm thinking of getting an "Iron Man" tattoo on my tibia. Too much?

TreeSemdyZee 02-22-2011 05:44 PM

TSA is gonna LOVE you.

dad 02-22-2011 05:46 PM

That is amazing. Are you eating the hospital food, or is the wife bringing in Quarter pounder and fries?

EazyD 02-22-2011 05:51 PM

Thanks for sharing. I say go for the tattoo, even if it's tiny! Or better yet, get iron man headlight mod on your new nismo ;) glad you are out of surgery

simota1 02-22-2011 05:53 PM

wow man!!!! im super happy you and your wife got out safely.... those pictures looks crazy....

Sundown 02-22-2011 05:57 PM

Actually, I'm at home right now. The accident was on Friday, first surgery on Friday night. Rod placement on Sunday night, started walking on it with a walker on Monday and discharged home today. :) It's all going well.

slammiam 02-22-2011 06:04 PM

Hard core.

You might even have to weather a full patdown. :ugh2:

You know, in Time magazine, they said that in 2040, the SINGULARITY will occur, when man and machine fuse together.

I really doubt that for a lot of reasons but I'd be hijacking the thread then.

Fire 02-22-2011 06:20 PM

Hey man good to see you are doing well. Just like an RN to joke about an injury like that. Yes I'm a RN and EMT so know where you are coming from. You might want the tatoo onyour shin as nobody but the OR people will see one on your tibia. Sorry to hear about the others in the truck. Just remember it wasn't your fault. Stay strong and keep up the fight.

spearfish25 02-22-2011 06:26 PM

Glad you're patched up and home. Do they just leave the fibula to remodel without realigning and plating?
