Lower back hurts riding in the Z?

Picked up a touring/sport/navi Z this Tuesday and I've noticed it's been taking a slight toll on my back. I'm 24. I've tried adjusting the seat however I can but I think I'm going to have to invest in a small pillow. Anyone have a recommendation for this situation or specific kind of pillow? Thank you

My back hurt a little and I stopped putting my wallet in my back pocket and that seemed to help.

djpathfinder 02-11-2011 03:19 AM

Have you tried to adjust the lumbar support on your seat?

wdkwang 02-11-2011 03:31 AM

ya i've tried multiple times adjusting the seat settings but i haven't found a setting that alleviates it. i don't notice the pain until i'm relaxed back in the house sitting down. i understand the purpose of the seat design; i just can never quite feel comfortable enough.

houkouonchi 02-11-2011 03:38 AM

Is it possible your back was sore/hurt to begin with? My back was only slightly bothering me when I first got the Z and I noticed after driving the Z and several days after driving it each day it got really bad. It actually got the point I had to go to the doctor for it but I eventually found that the Z was just causing additional pain on my already hurt back. Once my back completely stopped bothering me I never had problems with back pain while driving the Z (or after driving it) after that.

What kind of backpain was it, and how did you cure it? I do some heavy lifting in the gym so that can add to the back strain. I'll agree with you on your point. Whatever you did to alleviate your back, let me know, cause I don't want to end up resenting the car just cause of my back.:shakes head:

kailua 02-11-2011 04:26 AM

The Z's seats are not the most ergonomic nor the most comfortable seats out there. They just look the part. Plus, you have to contort your body a bit to get in and out and the short wheelbase makes the car bounces alot. The other thing I noticed is that because the roof is low, you kind of end up hunkering down to see out the windshield and this contributes to back strain. If your 6ft or taller it seems to be a bigger issue.

I had the exact same scenario, wallet in back pocket...no good. Now issues.

spearfish25 02-11-2011 07:39 AM

Also try some stretching exercises. If the Z seat is hurting your back, you have an underlying back problem.

Baer383 02-11-2011 08:28 AM

My wallet is big it caused me to be put in traction.:bowrofl:

+1
This helps greatly. Also wearing loose pants and just sitback and relax when sitting in the seat. Lot of times drivers are stiff from concentrating too much on driving smoothly.

Check this out:
INFLATABLE LUMBAR SUPPORT from Aircraft Spruce

A lot of people in 350z have used this and it works great. Just install it under the cover and you're good to go. :)

kenchan 02-11-2011 09:16 AM

when i used memory foam (temper something it was called) under my butt it felt really good... well, until a cold day it was like a brick. :icon14:

I agree no wallet in back pocket while you drive.

Here is the stretch that will save your back the rest of your life. Think of an aluminum can that you bend one direction then the other until it snaps in half. Do not allow your back to snap in half.:icon17:
1) Stand straight, hands straight up, slowly bend at your hips, do not touch your toes on the first try, but that will be your goal eventually. Let your body weight stretch out your back a few seconds.

2) Slowly stand back up straight hands reaching for the heavens and then lean and stretch backwards towards a wall so you can catch yourself. If you want to use your hands to walk down and back up the wall. You should hear popping and cracking.

Keep repeating.
In future days you will become more limber, and the back pain wains.

Good luck.

heating pads ftw, too. For back pain, especially lumbar, I love me a good heating pad, couch, movie combo.

cheshirecat 02-11-2011 09:31 AM

check the exercise at the far right.

Tell the girl friend or wife to help you out. Then secretly do the real exercises, so you show improvement and the need for more female help. :rofl2:

dude. I don't have back problems, and no matter what I do, from day 1, this car has been the ultimate discomfort.

My 350z was super comfortable, I don't get it.

I dunno if it's just the touring seats, but mine is more comfortable than the 350. I dunno. The lumbar support is much better.

I have heard complaints about the 370 touring seats. I have a base model, and I haven't had many problems.

I want a Z 02-11-2011 01:49 PM

I have a memory foam lumbar support cushion that I got from Office Depot and use in my office, it should work great the car.

Office Depot Brand Memory Foam Back Rest 2 516 H x 13 34 W x 14 18 D Black by Office Depot

wdkwang 02-11-2011 01:58 PM

ill try out the different stretching exercises and look into the cushions if they don't remedy the issue after a week or two. i'm 6'2" and 185lb. i go to the gym 3-5 days a week so i'm not out of shape (other than still smoking =/ ). i've situated the seats so that my head has about 2-3 inches from the roof but i do notice that i'm naturally tense driving in the Z lol, i would imagine that is adding to the problem like kenchan said.
thanks for the help everyone

PapoZalsa 02-11-2011 09:47 PM

That must be an old back injury. Not another thing to blame the 370Z for. I'm 6"0" and have driven the 370Z straight for over 9 hrs and the 350Z for over 10 hrs and never had any back problem.

Back off the donuts, that might help...:bowrofl:

azn370z 02-11-2011 10:19 PM

Sometimes back pain is caused by weak abs. A tight core can do wonders for back pain.

wdkwang 02-11-2011 11:15 PM

ill be hittin up abs even harder then. i've been taking a lot of 1 hour drives and most of the time i come back, i'm alright but i feel my back is feeling a lil different. only once my back was noticeably bothering me which led me to post about it.

import111 02-12-2011 12:20 AM

I have 2 messed up discs in my spine and arthritis in my spine and driving the 370Z less than an hour actually helps my back pain. More than an hour and it begins to get pretty sore.

Consider yourself lucky. Try driving a nismo down a concrete interstate. You'll be wanting out of that thing quick. Or just drive about a 120 and it all goes smooth from there on.

370Z Purist 02-12-2011 01:11 AM

Many other cars I've driven for periods longer than an hour made me sore. The Z doesn't give me that problem. I find that reclining the seat slightly to avoid making me sit perpendicular to gravity alleviates any back discomfort. I'm in good shape, so it's definitely not my having to do with being in shape, I guess.

nicknick 02-12-2011 02:32 AM

OMG! It is amazing how many "young" people nowadays complain about things. I don't know what has become of men today. It seems like women have succeeded in feminizing them.
And please no jokes re MX5 being a ladies car cause i can tell you it aint. I love the Zed and has anyone noticed how many ladies drive slk, tt etc?

C'mon guys be men not girly boys and the advice re strentghing your core muscles is right. Hit the gym.

Basically it was me taking large doses of aleve (the generic form). I think it was equivelent to 2 or 3 aleve every 4 hours for several days until my problems went away.

I originally took some ibprofin but I was told by the doctor that for back pain like I was having I really needed to be taking atleast 4 at a time every 4 hours.

When I get home I can maybe look exactly what the prescription was but it was something I could get over the counter.
