I personally dont see any reason to turn it off while driving on the street, which is exactly where I want to be safe as possible. If I was on the track or somewhere I could check it out and see exactly how much difference there is then I would have it off. I think too many people hop into the car and immediately think I dont need anyone helping me drive I know what the hell Im doing. I think respecting the vehicle and learning what it is capable of is the first thing that should be done. I know we throw the phrase "spirited" driving around, but we dont live in a "closed set". Be safe out there folks its not just you, you are endangering.

As far as selling it, I dont know that I would of gone that far. You can have a wreck in anything. It sounds to me like you were a little gunshy, and just werent happy with it anymore. The first time I low-sided my bike, the best advice I got was "get back on it right away". If you let doubt and fear set in then its very hard to get over it.

Anyway sorry to see your Z go, but you gotta do what you feel comfortable with.

Quoted from above.

No insult intended, but you said yourself you sold it because you're scared of killing yourself. The kid's just a convenient excuse.

The whole story is just hilarious because I think its pretty obvious that you got in a bit over your head with the car and your kid, and now after the accident its probably even worse. You wouldn't have bothered "bragging" about losing your monthly payment, otherwise.

So which is it? You're scared to drive and kill yourself because you can't control your own urges to drive like a nut in a sports car? Or is it finances and being a good parent for your kid? Im going with the latter, FWIW.

Also, one final note: you're probably just as likely to die in a 370Z as you are in *insert whatever your new, cheaper vehicle will be here*. So the argument that you sold it for the good of your child as far as SAFETY goes, is silly.

Back on the VDC topic, both sides have some fair points. I think the VDC actually is to blame for some 370Z accidents. People drive with it on all the time and it corrects their minor mistakes, never allowing them to feel out the limits and really learn to drive the car. Then when they make slightly larger mistakes that the VDC can't compensate for (basic physics always still applies) they're pretty much SOL, since they've got no feel for handling the car.

That being said, I still think for casual street driving in wet conditions, leaving the VDC on is a good bet for some extra safety insurance. It can save you from stupid situations. I'd still recommend explicitly turning it off most of the time and learning to drive the car though.

The Z doesn't really get that tail happy with VDC off unless you want it to. I think most of these VDC off crashes are people just driving too fast for the conditions and not slowing down enough for turns.

Cars don't crash themselves. People have been crashing cars with and without traction control, of the safest economy cars, all the way up to the most high performance sports cars. It depends on the driver and the circumstance. Sometimes the driver creates the circumstance by being an asshat. Personally, i drive with VDC on if its raining or wet, otherwise its off.

I do partially blame VDC for some of these accidents, only in the sense that because its so invasive it makes people want to turn it off completely. Honestly, in my daily commute with VDC off i never drift or anything or even lose traction, but if VDC were on and i go over an uneven road surface during a turn it totally throws off the balance of the car and makes it really unenejoyable. Turn it off if you feel comfortable, its still more enjoyable even if you aren't driving very spiritedly.

and to the OP, your reason for selling your vehicle would make sense if you had a motorcycle, not a sports car. You could follow that logic and say that some parent who can't afford to buy a new car with the latest safety features and drives a mid 90's sentra is somehow an irresponsible parent because they are somehow putting their life on the line because they don't have a 5 Star safety rated vehicle.
