You would think it should also turn the headlights on if the wipers are on, but apparently it doesn't. As mentioned there is a light sensor which will only turn them on if it get's dark enough (around dusk on a normal day)

"Auto" does also allow you to leave them on when you turn off the car and they will automatically turn off after 96 seconds (I think) If you just leave them on it beeps at you when you turn off the car to warn you because they will stay on. I haven't tested it but I assume this car is smart enough to turn them off eventually anyway, most are, but I don't think it will do it until your battery is almost dead

I've always wondered why that wasn't standard, since it's the law where I drive (don't know how that varies from place to place).

The is the law is most states. Some states even got signs indicating that.

Why?!? Nobody ever want's them, if you want your lights to be on there is this funny little knob on the left of the wheel you can twist
