Its sensitive to light. If you put it on auto in the middle of the day when the sun is out its not gonna turn on. If you have the Nav you can also adjust its sensitivity. You can also adjust how long the light stays on after you turn the car off and exit the vehicle.

Most auto headlights don't come on in the daytime if it is raining unless the clouds are extremely dense. You do have a headlight indicator on the dash (green symbol) and when your lights are on, auto or otherwise, that will light up. If it is raining and you want the lights on best to just do it manually.
