little help?
So other day me and my family went to LA. But we ended up taking 2 separate cars. I took my z and they took there car. On the way it was raining so I decided turn on my headlight. I just put it to "auto" but couple minutes later my mom calls me and tells me to "turn on your damn headlights!" i was getting bit annoyed because I thought it was on. I wasn't too sure so I pulled over to a gas station to check my headlight and sure enough, it wasn't on. Only something very little i think like low beam was on or something. So I had to manually turn it on. Now my question is this was around 11am. Does "auto" headlight work on time basis? because at night it turns on the headlight but I was wondering why it wasn't turning on? I thought auto meant, you can leave it on after you turn your car off and it automatically turns off? Am I off here?

I assume there is a light sensor. I leave mine on auto and on a bright day when I pull into my dark garage, the lights pop on last second. My guess is that it wasn't dark enough for the lights to come on.

Its sensitive to light. If you put it on auto in the middle of the day when the sun is out its not gonna turn on. If you have the Nav you can also adjust its sensitivity. You can also adjust how long the light stays on after you turn the car off and exit the vehicle.

Most auto headlights don't come on in the daytime if it is raining unless the clouds are extremely dense. You do have a headlight indicator on the dash (green symbol) and when your lights are on, auto or otherwise, that will light up. If it is raining and you want the lights on best to just do it manually.

This is why I practically never leave them on Auto. If I want the lights on, I'll switch them on. If not, I'll leave them off. Why depend on a light sensor and computer to do what you can very easily do yourself. It's just twisting a stalk, folks.

You would think it should also turn the headlights on if the wipers are on, but apparently it doesn't. As mentioned there is a light sensor which will only turn them on if it get's dark enough (around dusk on a normal day)
"Auto" does also allow you to leave them on when you turn off the car and they will automatically turn off after 96 seconds (I think) If you just leave them on it beeps at you when you turn off the car to warn you because they will stay on. I haven't tested it but I assume this car is smart enough to turn them off eventually anyway, most are, but I don't think it will do it until your battery is almost dead

Yeah, I just turn my headlights on all the time. It makes you more noticeable to other cars (which can be critical in two-lane highway passing situations) and then you don't have to turn them on/off for various low-light situations you run into (going into a tunnel, parking garage, crashing on an alien planet where carnivorous beasts come out to eat when the sun goes down...).

If the lights are set to "on", will they turn off on their own if you forget? How long does it take by default?

Default headlight off delay in auto mode is 45 seconds but if you have Nav you can adjust that to 0 (your dealer can do it for you if you don't have Nav). They turn off when you get out and close the door. You can also set them to turn off up to 180 seconds.
