The 1-series is only slightly cheaper (within $5k) and slightly lighter (within 175 lbs) than the 3-series. I see no reason why the 1M wouldn't be similarly lined up to the M3.

That 1M is hideous ! It looks like somebody ordered a tack on body parts kit from ebay or was designed by the same style-unconscious dorks that designed the new Mazda 3. :roflpuke2:

when hyundai comes out with the genesis, and our car is marginally better from a performance perspective, everyone jumps on those 10ths of seconds and tiny power differences like they are mana from heaven. Then when someone mentions the fact that the genesis is cheaper, people are like'oh rabbah rabahh grumble grumble who cares'

the performance/price differences between this car and our car is similar to those between ours and the genesis. Seems like nissan is getting squeezed from both sides, and you know what, i think its great. i love Z cars, and its competition like this that will make them better and better.

competition is a good thing. and when other car companies come out with good cars, that are competitively priced its good for everyone. who knows, maybe nissan will throw a straight six twin turbocharged engine in the next Z :yum:

It is important to note that the rest of the world pays a premium for these cars unlike Americans who get a deeply discounted vehicle. The stock 370Z in Canada starts at $40,000 and tops out around $50,000 for the sport touring model. And yes, our dollars are close enough to par to call it even...

Germans, Australians, Japanese, you name it, we all pay thousands more for cars than Americans. A twin-turbo'd Z from the factory would be in the $60000 mark here, if they even bothered to offer it to us. Keep in mind the Nismo is only available in the US in North America....

Having said that, the BMW is an awesome car and is in its own class, just like the 370Z. If you like Beemers, get one! If you like the Z, get one! But comparing them is really just wrong.

I didn't think so.... sorry, back to $55,000.... :icon17:

chuckd05 12-10-2010 05:45 PM

I think they had to keep the performance a little behind the m3 ... thats why the 13.2 , I'm guessing its detuned pretty severely

Its also interesting they are doing the twin turbo and not the newer single turbo setup they have in the 335s now.

Yeah, but with ANY options at all that make it worth owning it crests $65K+ in a blurr.

A quick tune from Dinan should be worth mid/low 12's no problem.

I wonder if BMW got to fix those damn fuel pumps. If not then 0-60 is more like infinity, as the car won't be moving at all! :shakes head:

Brakes from the M3? Every serious track enthusiast swaps out the M3 crappy brakes as one of the first mods they do on the car, so giving the same junk to the 1M is a fail from bmw.

And yes the car looks like crap and very ugly. Really, what's the point of this car? They kept the same engine and gearbox as the 135i. An aftermarket suspension on a 135i and an ECU tune would give identical performance to this car, making the 1M redundant. M cars have always been about free revving bespoke engines. M cars were never about slightly modified bread and butter BMW cars. That's like calling the new 335is an M3, which it obviously isn't. Why is this 1M considered an M car when its 3 series equivalent, the 335is is not? They both basically have the same engine tune and overboost. the M division is becomming a joke, making SUVs and entry level coupes. They should just keep the M3 and M5 as their M cars, and the rest of the M cars should be discontinued. This car should be renamed 135is, which it is. And how come they don't have an M version of the z4? That's far more suitable to the M division than a 135i.

I would like to know how cars like this weigh the same as the Z when we only have 2 seats and the Z is full of aluminum x,y,z...

chuckd05 12-10-2010 11:42 PM

Pharmicist what you say about this car not being worth an M badge. Some may say about the nismo Z ... The suspension of the M3 is far better than the standard 335. That alone is a significant improvement and a functioning lsd ( all 1 series have open diffs ) is also a huge plus...

This car in the right persons hands will be a very nasty machine.

I dont like the nismo that much either, mainly due to the lack of any performance gain over the sport package. Amd my point is that m cars have always been unique. In addition to improved suspension and lsd they also have their own unique engine and transmission. The 1m is not unique at all. It is just a 135i with an ecu tune and some bolt on diff and suspension upgrades. It really is more like the 335is than the m3. At least bmw could have given it a detuned version of the m3 v8

Jessobear 12-11-2010 07:40 AM

I've always like the 135i, but I think I'm in the minority. Many of my friends are big into BMW and they all universally HATE the 1-series. One of my friends refers to it as the BMW Shape Up, since the side skirt resembles those stupid shoes. They all universally rip on the suspension of the car, which is nowhere near a 3-series.

I'm a fan of the 335i as well, but it's just too pricey. One of my friends has a loaded '09 335i (M Sport Package, Premium Package, etc) with KW V3's and CSL knock-off wheels and it is really sweet. I went to BMW's website and priced up a comparable car. $51k. Wow.

Hopefully they don't ruin the look of the 135i with the M1 like they did with the M3. I really want to like the M3 but there is just way too much going on with the body. There's about ten vents in the rear bumper and the side mirrors are just awful. I don't buy an expensive BMW's to look like some ricer went wild with bodykits on it. When an AMG Benz looks subtle compared to your car, you're definitely on the wrong path.

:twocents: Buy a fully loaded Z for less than $40k and spend the other $10-12K on FI.

This is not meant to call you dumb or anything, but you would never make this statement if you actually owned a car with an aftermarket turbo kit. There's always stuff coming loose, breaking, etc and the tuning is a total nightmare. The car rarely runs right. I know this because I used to own a car like this before selling it to get the Z.

Most people think you can drop a car off at a shop, pay them a few hundred dollars and a couple hours later have a tuned car. This could not be farther from the truth. This might be true on an N/A car where you're retaining the factory ECU and you're simply tweaking fuel and ignition slightly for peak power. With F/I, basically everything you have is out the window. Car manufacturers spend months perfecting the mapping on a dyno. With your own car, you end up with knock in odd places, rich and lean spots, etc.

With a factory car, you never have to worry about parts breaking or fasteners coming loose. Believe me, a factory turbocharged car is the way to go.

Off the soapbox now:icon17:

Wow, I didn't even notice that before making my post. Yep, they made the same blunder as the M3. Seriously, this is the kind of crap I'd expect to see some 19-year-old kid have on a car at Hot Import Nights. Why the hell couldn't they just leave the car alone and put the performance parts in it? This is why it's so hard to make an argument for an M3. The 335i just looks so much better, and since it's turbocharged, you can make huge power out of a reflash.

no... this thing weighs at least 3396 and probably more on like 3415 like other numbers suggest. The Z with sport package is at 3250; check the Z vs Genesis vs Stang V6 test...

IMHO your not comparing apples to apples. BMW vs Nissian theres a big price difference.. i'm just as guilty taking the 370 for granted thinking the grass is greener on the other side.. with the 370 nissian hit it out of the park.

most of the cars people talk about trading for don't look half as good imo.

Not with the Z.. I droped mine of at a shop and got it back a tuned 450whp car. No problems at all.. I don't think anyone on this site with a TT kit has had 1 problem. Only thing I have to worry about it buying new rear tires and keeping the oil changed.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I think the Z is much better looking than the Cayman.

Those are the only people I know who own 1-series cars. They are usually murdered out and have a tune and a few bolt-ons. That, and the gay guy I used to work with who optioned a 1-series out to about 53K OTD I think it was, lol ('vert, and every option they had).

I am curious how you are liking the interior of the 'vette. I think the Z had a MUCH! better interior, based on the ones I drove vs. the 'vettes. I would be curious to hear what someone who has owned both cars, and lived with them on a daily basis for a while has to say regarding the quality of the interior.

Lay-out, features, that's all personal. I am curious what you think of the fit/finish. The way things do (or don't) flex/bend/creak when you press/sit/lean on tham. The way the seats are holding up. That sort of thing.

I have only been a passenger in a vette. I love the Z and the interior is better, that is why I asked him what bothered him about the Z. The new vette has always been a good looking car but personally I prefer the the Z.

spearfish25 12-12-2010 09:56 AM

I would love the performance of a Z06, but I can't fathom paying 70-90k for the interior of the 'vette. Also, not many people would realize a vette is a $90k car.
