if you need octane just mix in a little TOLUENE. You can get it pretty cheap at your local paint store. 114 octane just don't mix in more than 40% or it will eat your rubber lines up quick. I hear after extended use (every tank) it will get the gaskets in your carburator in a couple years. this was a subject in the hotrodders forum. How to figure octane is the average the octane between the two fuels being mixed. 7:1 ratio of 91 octane to toluene would be 91x6 + 114/ 7= 94.2
Gas stations only have 2 tanks low and high. the octane ratings in the middle are mixxed by pulling fuel from both tanks. In Oklahoma we usually just have 87/89/91. 89 is a 50/50 mix of the 2 that you pay 15 cents a gallon more for then another 15 cents for the high grade.
Toluene..my octane booster of choice - SportsCarForums.com an interesting read for those that use octane boosters.

Not all gas stations have only two tanks, some have three or more, one tank for every grade of gas.

 I've been putting 93 in since I got it, which is the only thing that's been in it since what ever the factory put in as far as I know.

but I bought mine because they made me a deal I couldn't refuse :rofl2:

Here in Panama we only have 91 and 95 octane gas...

91 is our "regular" and 95 is "premium"...

I always put 95 octane... :happydance:

oh I wasn't aiming it at you, I'm agreeing with you, I was aiming it at OP

seems he is either cheap or has a car he can't truly afford

crash1369 11-22-2010 04:25 PM

Is that regular gasoline though? It's ethanol down there or something isn't it?

Sunoco used to have 94 when I was in highschool, but a little over a year ago when the prices had shot up again highest you could get was 89 and that was hard to find at most places. But They all have 93 again so we're good. I would actually rather have get 91 but no place has it out here, 93 is certainly close enough and at least it's higher.

Panama uses the RON octane rating like Europe/Australia, where as the US/Canada uses the AKI octane rating (RON+MON)/2.

So your "95" RON is roughly equivalent to our 91. Your "91" is roughly equivalent to our 87.

Ha! I didn't know what the conversion was but I had a feeling that's what it would work out to. :tiphat:

93 octane w/ ethanol from Sunoco makes my car happy. Anything less than 93 makes it drive like crap. Octane over 91 does make a difference. Tested and proven over nearly two decades driving high compression turbo Eclipses and now, finally, the Z.
Exxon gas of any grade makes my car run like crap. BP/Amoco of any grade: same result. I'd just as soon fill my tank with Kool-Aid before using either of these fuels.

JACKPAC 11-24-2010 11:20 AM

93 all the time!

Really? I have NEVER heard of a vehicle that does this. There are set values in the PCM that it will advance to, and that's it--in every car I am aware--except the Z?

There are of course finite limits programmed, they are not infinite. But in general the VQ's are allowed to use very aggressive timing out of the box, and mostly run with timing retarded below maximum values unless all conditions are perfect.

We use reformulated gas in our state which uses more alcohol, one station attendent told me that plus and premiem were about the same or if you mix regular with premiem 50/50 it comes out to 90% premiem. All I know is with my GM LT1 5.7 liter I can run regular and hardly notice the difference due to V8s massive low end torque. In the Z the engine is more like a motorcycle very little low end torque and I noticed a real drop off in performance, so I just run 93 octane.
