Yes, the S54 was putting out as much power back then as our Z is now, but the smoothness of that Beemer engine is awesome (like the vibes of our VQ at 5k+ rpms? :happydance: ). Their M3 engine is a V8 with an 8500 rpm redline. Yes, assisted by turbos, but I really toyed with the idea of a "stripped down" new 335i for that powerplant - it's pure awesome. No lag, just gobs and gobs of torque. Now, the V8 turbo engines that the M5/M6 is about to get? Hopefully I'll never drive one in the next few years... temptation to sell my kids' tuition savings may get the better of me. ;) |

Not for a 370Z it isn't. http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...bb1496d3cf.pdf The V8 in the new M3 weighs less than the I6 in the E46 did. .8L and nearly 85bhp more and @15kg less than the E46 engine... What evolution would it take to impress you? |
But... with BMW, you get what you pay for. More refinement = more $$$.
I'll take the Z instead of the 335i and put the remainder towards landscaping and kitchen countertops for the wif!!! |
Thanks for all of the replies. Ended up buying a 2008 135i 6MT with 22k for 27.9k. Has all of the BMW packages. Bought a $800 tune from Cobb Tuning and she pushes 355hp and 377ft/lb at the wheels.
Much faster than my E46 M3. Will get a custom tune in a few months and it should put down 375hp and 400ft/lb. I drove a new 370Z and quite frankly was not impressed. |

I just purchased a 2010 Sport Package comin from a 335i a week ago. Its still growin on me but I like the decision and car looks great everytime I open the garage. Dont get me wrong I do miss my 335 which was faster by all means but I like the feel of the sports car. The only flaw is the road noise you hear or maybe its the factory Bridgestone bein noisy...

However, I really bought the 135i becuase of the performance potential and the more refined ride. I have about 6k in Tune, DP's, Wheels, Tires, Springs and Struts. Running low 12's in the 1/4 and trapping at 117mph. |

congrats on the 135. You will def incogni some fools out on the open road. |

Now the M on the other hand was a tad more comfortable, unless you had the 19" rims. Im a 220lb 5 foot 9 and the seats in the Z are a tad snug while the M3's were really comfy. If you had the SMG, (when the cog light didnt come on popping out of gear on the interstate) it shifted much quicker. So in a 0-60, at least to me, it was a tad quicker....but totally not worth the trouble. The Nissan doesnt have vanos issues, smg issues, rear subframe tearing.....now if you asked this same question over on m3forums.net they would tell you that the Z was a "boy racer" car and to get something with class...im not sure what a boy racer is since these cars can cost up to 40 grand new. I can tell you this much, get the Z. Ive never been happier trading in a car before, even if I did have negative equity. |
dont bother with a 370z, buy a EvoX :P

Dude get a grip. The Z is no vette in power but kills it in handling when talking street performance. The vetter is a track car. The vette has poor build quality and costs twice the price. And if you are an enthusiast? Your warranty is a secondary thought. You don't want to mod a Z for more power??? FINE don't buy one. But stop trying to convince us it is not worth modding or is an inferior car due to your lack, there of. The corvette has an impressive engine and that's where it ends. After that the vette needs work too. GM'S axles break under heavy use, gaskets blow left and right under heavy use. Chassis durability sux. Build quality is econo class on a 60k car and you can sell the phrase "affordable supercar" all day long but its still a cheaply built american wannabe supercar. the Z may need turbos and coolers but the vette needs a suspension, new axle and differential a completely new interior and RATTLE-REPELLANT. The vette rattles more than an ARIZONA SNAKE-PIT. JUST KEEPING IT REAL, I still think vettes are "Generally" cool. But vettes need a lot of work too. At 32k, the Z still has no competitor. And you wanna get technical about the Z being slower than mustangs. But think about it. 12.8 quarters on the stang. 13.1 on the Z. One is a 5litre v8, the other 3.7 v6. Hmmmm 13.1 is wayyyy more impressive. I've been next to 5.0's on real world pavement. They aren't faster in that situation. That's one thing that's never discussed here. The performance on pavement is still way superior. That's where u begin to compare BMW, the king of pavement cars and the 370z, puts a dent in that one too. On the track, the Z is not as race ready as a vette or mustang, but it still holds its own. And the evo... fun car, but is sitting in the rattle pit with the vette. Its an awwd as well so its even less of a car to compare. Its designed for a whole different type of fun. You don't choose EVO's over Z's. You try to own both for a different driving experience. But the evo still can't be a Z in the build quality department. |
