By the way, I've been meaning to tell you, I used your avatar picture for my work wall paper for months prior to getting my car. It's also one of about 5 pics I used when sending pics to my friends showing them what I was getting. Fall is my favorite season, and pearl white is my color, so it was a natural. Cheers ---- Bonzo  |

Actually I should get of my lazy butt and take some more pics. |

Bonzo, are you getting some CF covering done to your console area?
|
sound deadening
Im just gonna use a bed comfortor and wrap it around the spare tire. See if that improves anything.

Further update on tires ..after driving around for a while I do notice a quieter cabin..not a whole lot different but somewhat ..and combined with the sound dampening in the hatch and doors, the car sounds perfect ..for me anyway.. sports car sounds without too much noise..of course if you play in a band..and are slightly deaf as a result ..maybe it might be too quiet for you!!:icon18: :bowrofl:

Yesterday I drove from Dallas to San Antonio. This gave me a chance to really hear how well the Dynamat worked. The road debris noise from the rear wheelwells is all but forgotten now. You can hear some of the larger objects hit, but even that is muffled out pretty well. I am running Berk HFC's and ARK Performance CBE. Before the Dynamat install, the drone from the exhaust driving in traffic at 50-60 mph was almost unbareable. Not much changed with the obnoxious noise between 50-60 on-off acceleration. Perhaps this is the HFC's. Tire noise with the stock Bridgestones wasn't too bad. I think that some of that could be reduced by using Dynamat in the doors. It doesn't bother me enough to do it unless I have to get into the door panels for something else first. All and all the drive was enjoyable with the exception of driving through Austin traffic and wishing my right leg was 6 inches shorter after 200 miles of driving. I will be removing my Berk HFC's and installing F.I. LTH's when I return home. I hope that takes care of the city traffic 50-60 mph exhaust drone.

Dynamatting will definitely help!
|
I know what your saying about the ARK drone. Did the dynamat but it did little to quiet the drone. Put a few hundred miles on it and it got a little better. As much as I hated to add more weight, I got a 12 sq ft piece of dynapad and put it under the carpet.
Wow, big difference. Just traced the carpet on the dynapad and cut it to fit, one piece, about 10 lbs. The quality of ride and sound is tons better and can now hear the exhaust and not the drone. |

Anyone tried putting dynamat on the underside of the corrugated plastic cover (along with doing the actual hatch). Wonder if that would help as well?
|
Quote:
That corrugated plastic has a name, it's called coroplast.;) Sorry, I had to be a smart arse. :icon17: It's not very often I can use terms I work with on a car forum. Coroplast - Manufacturer of Corrugated Plastic Sheets I'm not sure you idea would help or not. It was my understanding that it's the actual bonding with the metal of the car that creates the sound absorption. But on this one I could be totally wrong. |

However, the combination of both has transformed my ride from what it was. |
DynoPad
Yea, something thicker than dynomat. I saw dynomat, very thin. Im thinking 1/2 inch thick insulation under the carpet in the hatch area. Overall, road noise never was much an issue cause its a sports car anyway. But im lookin at larger tires and it may be more of a concern. Im going to Lowes to check out some insulating products.

Bought at Lowes today
A prouct called Frost king Duct Insulation. 12" wide 15ft long. Foil on one side and SELF ADHESIVE on the other . Thicker than Dynomat Extreme. Cost for 2 rolls equals 30ft long 12" wide=$40.45. I will let you know how it works and post pics. Says it insulates and STOPS vibrations. This will probably help since Im buying larger tires soon. Will do my hatch area . Looks exactly like Dynomat.
|
Thanks Rebe945..
even if it just takes the "road noise" on the hgwy down a bit.. a simple layer of insulation under the hatch area carpet mat.. that would be a inexpensive and simple solution... looking forward to hear your thoughts on the results... |
Done
Well, just finished installing the product I mentioned and I must admit , it looks good. Did the whole hatch area with overlaping . this product is thicker than Dynomat, self adhesive, has foil on one side . Took the comparment apart and simply cut sections and placed in place. Very good adhesion.Up on the sides where possible. Then I simply placed a small bed comforter underneath and around the spare. Earlier I drove with just the comforter and I noticed a definite improvement. If this works as I expect, no further work will be required. I dont want perfect quiet. It sound and felt very comfortable today earlier with just the comforter, so with the addition of todays work, should be fine. Will report back when I drive again since the Z is under cover and not a daily driver.

My return drive back from San Antonio to Dallas today was just great. The road noise was not bad at all. I drove over some dirt and rocks and only noticed the sound of large rocks hitting the inner wheel well with a good muffled sound. I guess my exhaust just needed the drive down to get broken in. It sounded great all day. I still have less than 800 miles on the car. I will not be using the dynamat on the doors at all. IMO, it sounds just right as is with the hatch and wheel wells dynamatted. On to the next mod (oil cooler).

Sorry man, I wanted to but I left my camera at my office. Will take shots in the near future.

How long did the whole thing take, did it require any special tools

Id say it took about 2 hrs total. It wasnt difficult .Lost some blood like others. Started earlier in the day then had an appointment . Came home and finished just before dark. Im also thinking now to do the underside of the coroplast as Scott In Indi mentioned. Have about half role left out of the 2 i started with. Walked the dog after that to cool off. Also just used good scisors. Again its called Frost King Duct Insulation .
