Noise
You know, it never really occurred to me until I read about it. I have 18s so its fine. I mostly just cruise around so there is no noise. Yeh, over those concrete scored highways you hear some noise but never gave it a thought. Its a sports car. But I did insulate and will do the underside of the coroplast piece just underneath the carpet section and add more to the spare tire area to use up what i already bought. I also think a small thin:driving::driving: bed comfortor wrapped around the hatch area adds more. Those comfortors are insulated with a layer between the top and bottom. Or I may take the comfortor out and use a new piece of carpet insulation over the dynomat like product I used. thats it for me. I cant wait to drive it again. Maybe Thursday but Friday for sure since I scheduled an oil change. Im doin this because Ill be getting larger tires, possibly the 255/305 setup so This effort will not hurt.:driving:
|
Update
Cannot do the insulating on the underside of the coroplast. Its against nissans foam padding--no more room.so i just added the rest to the inner sidewalls around the spare and layered more on the bottom. We will see soon the results.
|
I turn up my music and if I'm not listening to music I roll down the windows to hear the VQ song. No rock noises for me.
|
Well i can now give a final report on the results of my efforts to tame this beast.
I have done the hatch and doors and the final thing was new Conti tires.. I am happy to report the car if perfect..for me. Its so quiet that I can actually see that any more sound dampening would spoil the sport car experience, as some have said. Actually, i can also understand why some might think I had already gone too far... ...but I do like to take long distance drives with my wife and I just cannot bear the thought of the road noise drowning out her "helpful advice" as to traffic signs, my speed, braking, lane changing, other drivers and such.. Well i now feel I can really enjoy this car to its fullest...sometimes when driving on the back-roads, sometimes driving on the highway and always when ALONE.. This site saved me from what I thought was a huge mistake at first by buying a car that was just far too annoying on the open road...so one annoyance down...one more to go...if you catch my meaning.. |
Noise
Glad your happy. Im a perfectionist and i need to be satisfied in what I do also.

Charlie
Also what size tires and was it DW or the DWS. Im so picking up new wheels and tires. Avants and Hankookv12s. I gave the Contis a thought, so Id like to know if they're better all round. Thnks, Rich

Just wanted to report in that I'm about 1/2 way done with mine. I bought the trunk kit from FatMat and it wasn't enough. Spent over 4 hours trying to get it all in real good. Sh*t stuck like crazy, even in little pieces where little pieces helped. Used plain scissors to cut; then my fingers, the handle of the scissors and the roller they sent to push it all down. 5 sheets @ 18 x 36 is not enough material to do it all. I started with the fender wells, then did the front floor portion right behind the seats, up and over the axle area, and a little left for the floor out in the back corners. I still have to do the floor and back wall. Ordered another 25 sq ft lot to finish the rest. If I have any left over I'm going to double up over the fender wells. The ONLY noise I'm trying to suppress is the rocks & pebbles. The tire, road and exhaust noise are all part of the sports car experience for me. Tinking pebbles are not.
By the way, doing this is a HUGE PAIN IN THE ARSE!!!! :icon23: |

I went with the DWS because the salesman said, and Guard Dad confirmed, that the S has a chemical in the rubber which prevents it from hardening in cold weather...which can make the tires loose traction. Maybe the DW would have been better for flat out racing and performance but I have to compromise a bit. I would never drive in snow simply for the reason that they salt and sand the roads and that is bad for the car...but it does get cold here and I was told that anything under 45 degrees is getting into a dangerous area...so better safe than sorry.. Good luck... |

Keep us posted on the results... |

My experience was that no one thing does it all but that the doors are the big thing, followed by the hatch and then things were fine but the tires made it perfect ..for me anyway. |
I've been running on the DWS for about 5k miles and they're not bad. They're all season tires, and Charlies is correct, they don't get as hard in the cold, and they handle very well in wet conditions. They're not that much quieter than the stock Bridgestones, but they are noticeably softer giving you a more comfortable ride. But that comfy ride comes at a cost. The softer tire wall means the turn in and weight shifts make the car feel "mushy" making it a little less fun IMO.
|
Has anyone tried the Bridgestones RE970AS Pole Position as an alternate to DWS?
They are rated a bit higher overall on Tire Rack, especially for road noise. Been following the noise thread for a while and tires seem to be part of the solution in a lot of posts. |

Good Insight
Thanks, Ill stay with the Hankooks v12s with the Avant Garde rims. Never drive in cold weather so the Continentals wouldnt match my needs.

This thread has been extremely helpful. I love my cars loud (FI headers and exhaust), but I like to hear the exhaust and engine, not road, tire and pebble noise.
I added 12 sq ft of B-Quiet to the hatch floor and wheel well area, and also cut out an "egg crate" foam sleeping pad to fit the hatch area under the trunk mat. One mattress pad did about 3 layers. I also had some leftover commercial carpet, so I did one layer of that to fit. (I have no spare or anything in my trunk). With the trunk mat in place, it looks 100% stock. Plus I can remove it in 30 seconds if needed. It made a HUGE difference. The car is still loud as hell, but it's the RIGHT kind of noise. It actually makes the engine and exhaust sound 100% clear without all the tire and road noise. And when the weather is nice, I have the windows down anyway so I can hear the exhaust note even more. But it's nice to have the option of carrying on a conversation or listening to music if I want to. It's been one of the best mods I've done to the car so far. Highly recommended. For $50 and about 1 hour of your time, you can't go wrong. :driving: |
Hatch solution
:iagree: Can be much cheaper to do like Raw shark. Im also going to lowes again and find an additional item to help. Like carpet padding cut and layed out to fill the hatch area under the trunk mat. PS I did drive on Friday and is quieter with what I already did. The issue of road noise is that it is no factor any longer.

Heres a thought,,,imagine if you were the chief designer and engineer for Nissan and they asked you to design the newest Z..now imagine if your goal was to read through all these postings and come up with a solution that that would please everyone!!

it works
Drove briefly , not a full test, but it really sounded totally as if in a normal sedan. Wow.

1500 mile update -
The car is now as quiet as any of my other rides. The new Yokohama S-Drive tires and doors/truck done in Dynomat extreme made all the difference. No need to do anything else. Moving on to do other mods... all done here. ;) lp |
:iagree:
|
Looks like Dynamat will have to wait, I will be doing sway bars first instead, ha.
|
Dynamat is way overpriced for what it is. I have used B-Quiet and Secondskin. I just recently got done doing my wifes entire mustang in secondskin including spectrum, damp pro, and overkill pro. High quality stuff for a good price. Bquiet is really good stuff too not the quality that secondskin is but for the price its amazing. I will be doing the hatch on the Z here soon
|
So I did the Dynamat today. Definitely helped with the pebble noise, but maybe not as much as I had hoped. Did notice that the car has a much more 'solid' sound now though and you can definitely here the engine & exhaust more (even stock). One interior panel isn't fitting all the way so I think I've got a tight spot somewhere that not letting the panel sit flush. Figure I'll drive it for a while and maybe the panel will leave a mark on the Dynamat and I can find it.
|
Installed Frost king Duct Insulation today. It took a bit to do but once I figured out to work with larger pieces first it was easier. Many small pieces to cut though. Im wondering about the spare tire talk, I filled the rim with a couple old sweatshirts and want to pack some stuff in the 3 side slots around the spare.
I guess it sounded better but its tuff to tell with the AAM short tails:eek: |
