There's a certain age range where you can get in financial trouble because banks are willing to give you more money than you should probably borrow.
If you are very old -- who cares if you make a bad financial decision you're gonna die soon anyway and you can't take it with you. If you are very young, banks typically won't give you enough money for you to get yourself in much trouble -- you basically have enough time to make up for it if you mess up. So the very old and the very young are golden -- it's us middle aged fogies that have to be careful! :) |

age is just a number, you're only as old as you feel. Drive whatever floats your boat. Sounds like your friend is the stereotypical porsche douchebag. |

Finance=downpayment. Financing is cheaper, when you weigh interest-rates against deflation and how long it would take to save $40K. With the low APR's you can get, why throw money away saving it and fighting inflation? Not only that, but you delay a cheaper gratification in favor of a more expensive one. |

Nope, not too old. I'm 55 and have always driven some type of performance car and hopefully always will. To me though, a Corvette driven by guys in their mid-40's to mid-50's says "mid-life crisis". My neighbor is 72 and has a twin turbo 300Z plus a G35 with a Stillen intake and some type of aftermarket exhaust system, and every time he sees me in the driveway washing my 370Z he comes over and tells me he's thinking of trading in the G35 for a new Z.
When I was younger my nightmare was to have to own a minivan with child seats and now my nightmare is to have to own a grandpa car like a Buick or Oldsmobile. Don't listen to your buddy. Test drive a Z, if you like it buy it and don't look back. And by the way, I get lots of compliments from 30-something soccer moms about my car, I think it doesn't have the negative connotation that a 'Vette has when they see a guy in their '50s driving one. |
Get it you will love it. Can't drive it when your dead.....
I don't care if your 18 or 88 are how anyone paid for it thats personal. As long as you show respect to others on the road to each his own... By the way my next one will be the vette.... |

I think it's ok to finance, but putting down like 3-5k on a 40,000 dollar car is not enough... I personally pay cash for everything I buy, but I'm kinda weird like that. |
Never 2 old
Go for it. I'm 55, last summer I sold my pristine Porsche 911 Targa that I owned for the last 8 years and bought a 370Z Nismo. I couldn't be happier I love everything about the Z.

I think 20% down including TTL on invoice price is good to go. My bank agrees. I wish I could afford to buy stuff all cash, but I am 24 and not established in life. I would rather get hosed for $5-8K on interest financing my car and then have bullet credit from making consistant payments for 72mo so that when I buy a house I am looking at a much larger savings because I bit the bullet on the car payment, soaked up the 5-8K interest, and got a GREAT APR on the house/land because of it. Further, if I bite the bullet on a new Z06, pay it off, by then the C7 Z06 will be otu for 2-3 years and be refined, and I can trade in the C6, and walk out with a 20-30K note on the C7Z. I end up paying peanuts for a car-note on a C7Z, finance for a short period of time, wash, rinse, repeat until I am down to trading in every 2 years and not hurting myself at all hardly with something like a $2-300 note on it each time. It's getting STARTED in life that is so expensive. |

I see guys a lot older than you driving Z's all the time. Stop being ridiculous.
|
It's your car and your money! do what you please...
But the Z is an awesome car for anyone..except for 18-20 yr olds, and 60 year olds....sooo buy it very soon! HAHA HAVE FUN! |
Yes, you are too old for a Z. You should have to suffer in an old person's car, like a Caddy CTS-V Coupe.
|
I hope you're not...I'm 61 and this is my 3rd Z...had a 280 (back in the 70's) just sold an '86 300 (had just over 200K) and lovin' my 370...git u one...you'll have a ball but get ready...people will tailgate you to try and figure out what the hell that good lookin' car in front of them is.
|
My age was the last thing I considered when I made the decision. But, I've always been a car lover from the old days of running my '64 Falcon Sprint on the strip down to my current car. You can see by my siggy this is my 4th two seather. BTW, I'm 59.
|
No, but you're definitely too old to care about what other people think.
Get the Z if you want one. |
I just turned 50 and bought my Z a month ago.....all but 2 cars I've ever owned in my life have been sports cars. Of all the things to worry about in life, what someone thinks about the age-appropriateness of your car should be the last thing to worry about on the list. It's none of their business what you drive. If you like it, drive it.

this question reminds me of a line from a jaguar tv commercial:
"if not now then when?" |
I just bought my 370. Let's say I am old enough to have owned one of the first 240Z's that were sold in the U.S. When I bought it, there was a 6 to 9 month waiting list to get one. I got mine sooner by taking a weird orange color Nissan had that year.
I figure I will be too old for my Z when I can no longer get myself in and out of the car. Also, the Z isn't really that cheap anymore. Mine cost over $40k before I added new tires, backup camera, invisible bra, SS brake lines, etc. I figure I am in the low end of Porsche territory now. Most of all, who cares what anyone thinks. I am very happy with my Z and I don't give a $#%@ what anyone else thinks aobut it. |

I'm 50 and I get alot of the "mid life crisis" jabs but I really don't care. I bought a 350z in 05 and now I've got the 09 370z and I have zero regrets.
The 350z sold in 3 days too, when I bought my 370z. So they are very popular cars and hold decent value compared to most. Never worry about what others think you should be doing (outside of maybe your spouse of course). If you can afford it, you are the one that has to drive and maintain it. So buy what you want and have fun. Simple. |
I think everybody wants to point a finger and scrutinize any (large) purchase a 50 year old man makes and wants to call it a mid-life crisis. So cliche.
When I turn 50 and get an eight ball and 2 hookers, will call that a mid-life crisis too? I wonder. Only one way to find out. :D |
I bought my 370 Z last year, for my 62nd birthday. Didn't give the age issue a second thought and I haven't looked back since. I've been very happy with the car in all respects.
Having said that, however, my next car (at age 67) will probably be a model a bit easier to enter and exit---maybe a Mustang or a G 37, for example. But for now, I continue to enjoy my Z. |
Whenever I am asked if I'm having a midlife crisis because of the 370, I just say "No, I've been having a midlife crisis since I am 18."

I hate to inform everyone, but 50 is not "middle-age". How many people do you know who are 100? |
