A/C and WOT

One of the features of the NSX for better performance and MPG is it automatically turns off the Air Conditioner at wide open throttle.

Does anyone know if the 370Z has a similar feature?

Josh@STILLEN 07-20-2010 11:32 PM

Yes, the Z has had it through the 350Z.. will disengage the A/C compressor during WOT..

m4a1mustang 07-20-2010 11:38 PM

I think most all cars do this...

rha600 07-21-2010 06:03 AM

My $13K Honda civic does this.

although if it didn't it would take 2 weeks to get to 50mph.

BeachZTT 07-21-2010 06:49 AM

My 20 year old TwinTurbo even does this.

Red370 07-21-2010 07:40 AM

I dunno gentlemen, my car still shyts its pants when I have the AC on and I try to pass on the freeway... and no, its not driver error :)

I'm sure your engine is having to work 10x as hard as all of ours to be able to power the stereo and blast that Astley at volume 150. :rofl2:

Jeffblue 07-21-2010 09:07 AM

i have never noticed this happen, i guess i'm not paying attention to my climate control when i'm flooring my car, but its smart that they do it.

fullmonty 07-21-2010 09:33 AM

I've never noticed but I never use ac anyway

KillerBee370 07-21-2010 09:50 AM

A/C is for babies. A man should have a good sweat on the nuts when the weather warms up!

Mt Tam I am 07-21-2010 09:53 AM

I too so rarely use the A/C, I often wonder if it will still works, months between usages. I never noticed it in my 300 ZX either, although I do remember turning it off in anticipation of spirited driving.
I am in medium thick fog today @ 52* and plan on trying A/C cutoff this morning.
I hope mine is not broken like Red370's, although my cars diapers have not needed changing thus far.

DIGItonium 07-21-2010 09:56 AM

A/C is a drag, literally, but I'm not sure if it has to do with my pulleys. It's great when A/C is off, but throttle response lags so bad 2nd gear feels like 5th gear acceleration at some point. Plus, accelerating in 1st feels like launching in 2nd.

Jeffblue 07-21-2010 09:57 AM

the day i don't use AC if its hot as hell out, is the day i gut my interior to make my car lighter.

you can still have a good nut sweat with the AC on if you use the seat warmers!

m4a1mustang 07-21-2010 09:59 AM

Yeah it's been hot as hell this summer, so AC is blasting in my car!!!

:iagree: the other day some guy in a cobalt revved at me, so I figured i'd do a spirited run up to the speed limit of course, which was 50, ol' Roxy epicly failed. I dont think this car likes running with the AC on or high oil temps. The car just feels extremely weak in the lower revs with the AC on, when I'm driving with it off, I can feel a night and day difference in low end torque. I do however, like my exhaust note at idle when the AC is on, kinda burbly.

Ditto... it bogs easily. I don't recall the 350Z having this issue other than the A/C compressor growl (replaced under warranty from TSB). I'm still running on a stock tune, but the 370Z definitely begs to be force fed.

at WOT, mazda miatas shed their massively strong doors to save weight and improve accelleration, then they grow new ones once you come off the gas.

:iagree: When I'm driving spirited, the windows go down and the A/C will be off, regardless of outside temps.

:iagree: If NASCAR drivers withstand 140 degree temps for 5 hours with a fire suit on, we can deal with 90-100 with shorts and a t-shirt!!!

I'd take an extra 5 months of winter to get rid of June-August in Georgia. Besides, our winters just mean it's "sorta cold", no snow. There is zero chance I'm driving around in 105 degree temps without my AC on.

Soygen 07-21-2010 09:23 PM

I don't care I driving without ac gave me a hundred more hp, it's too damn hot and humid here. AC all day every day until around October. Bleh.

Red370 07-21-2010 09:27 PM

See, I tend to drive places where beautiful women frequent, getting out of a hot car with pit stains and a soaking wet back and a bad case of swamp nuts doesnt exactly do wonders for the game gentlemen, i'm assuming yall are married:rofl2:

AC is on. I'm willing to trade power for comfort

Well I keep the AC on if I'm going somewhere where I have to look and smell presentable.

But at all other times... bring on the monkey butt. :bowrofl:

I read somewhere that the drag caused by having the window open consumes more power than having the aircon on.

You'd have to be going pretty fast for it to make a really noticeable difference.

wilsonp 07-22-2010 12:31 AM

If I got paid Nascar prices to drive I'd turn off the A/C too :)
