If I had a kid and needed a back seat I would get a G. Otherwise it would be the Z. Both nice cars IMO.

I hardly ever have more than one passenger in my G but it's always nice with the extra room back there and the occasional extra passenger or two. |
i wanted to revive this old thread since i had a question.
I am also debating between both cars. I have quickly test drove both and liked how smooth the G drove but liked the clutch and sportiness of the Z. They both are great cars! I guess my questions is about costs. Do you think there is a significant difference in maintenance and repair(if that ever happens) costs between the 2? |
I just purchased my 370z. I traded my 2004 G35 6MT (brembo, navigation, etc)....I miss the car, and it was a blast to drive. That being said I did not want to buy a G37c. Wanted something different, so I purchased the 370z. It is smaller and has less space, but I do have another daily driver to use if needed.

Wow. I came and signed up to the forum to ask this exact question (og topic).
My wife wants an auto G37 coupe. I like the styling of the Z a bit better. Appears after reading this thread, the G sounds like a better choice for her daily. Sounds like it rides smoother and has a bit more room. Any other opinions/suggestions are welcome. Thanks! |
I considered a G37, but there were only two things it had over the 370Z small
rear seats in addition to the cargo room. And a 7 year warranty. The Gs styling is more mondane and the interior is dated, plus you pay for that 7 year warranty. |
A G37S Coupe was my first choice (with a family). Actually, a Sedan first, but got dispensation from the better half to look at Coupes. I had an '04 G35 C 6MT and loved it.
The reason was more practicality on my part: 4 seats (we've got two kids). It was primarily my car to drive, but I thought I'd like the take the kids once in awhile. The G drives smoother and easier, but it doesn't have the same driver's appeal. Decent for a sports coupe/sedan, but of course, won't hold a candle to a two-seater. Have you test driven a Z yet? Instead of a "boat" with a large engine, it feels more like a large engine with a very thin piece of sheet metal wrapped around it (ALL engine!). Sports car with the Z? You bet! The wife surprisingly agreed to the 370Z towards the last portions of my shopping, especially after she saw the 40th color (and the price - she was against the Cayman S (used)). If there's any question about functionality and ride, the G would be a better fit. |
The G37 doesn't come with a 7 year warranty standard, does it? A 2008 model specifically. If so, wow.

With the proper bushings, toe arms, sways, coilover,2.0inch drop, and an aggressive custom tune. The G will tear most v6's and some v8's a new one. Also the 112inch wheelbase increases stability when ridin yp 160+mph. Best believe the G will achieve 1.12g' when properly modded. My gripes with the G are these: 1. NO HANDBRAKE ON 7AT 2. Should be 150lbs lighter 3. Steering could be a tad heavier a la 370z. 4. Gauge cluster could look a little more aggressive 5. LAST BUT FAR FROM LEAST! MORE LOW END TORQUE!! Which is equally true of the Z. What's better about the G. 1. BACK SEATS 2. Moonroof 3. More comfy front seats. 12positions and leg support 4.better stereo 5. Intelligent cruise control 6.back up camera 7. LAST BUT NOT LEAST. SOUNDS WAY BETTER THAN A Z EITHER STOCK OR WITH AFTERMARKET EXHAUST. What's better about the Z 1. Aggressive styling. 2.cool center gauges 3.can corner harder with stock suspension. 4.LIGHTER! Base plus sport auto is 3269lbs. Manual is 3242lbs. Making it the lightest affordable 300+hp v6 auto. 5. Sick azz wheel options right from the factory. Not so good about the Z. Cramped interior, What's not so good about both cars. Gas mileage sucks for the engine size, but I can deal with it for the performance. Who to look out for. 1. A lighter Z/28 camaro. 2. Subaru 416a concept coupe. (Sti version might have a 330hp turbo) 3. Mazda rx7 16x rotory. The most top secret concept of all. ( may shock the masses???) My G37 mods 1. Nissan skyline badging 2. Akebono brake stickers 3. FI catpipes 4. injen cai 5. Stillen sway bars On order JIc coilover kit Next mods. Bushings toe arms exhaust and header by FI. Custom tune |
To sum it up in a few sentences. If you want a vq37 motor with a heavier, more luxurious, and 2 extra seats around it get the G37. If you are more about the performance or as I put it go, go, go get the Z.
IMO, the G has always and will be a watered down Z. I've run buddies who had the G35's when I had a 2004 Mustang GT and it wasn't close. Now I have a lightened Z with exhaust and tune and I can tell you for a fact the G is slower. It was slower when I was stock and it is slower when you match up bolt ons. Lastly, this may be to broad a statement but the G guys primarily mod for looks and put performance second. Majority of "modded" G's will have body accents, wheels, painted emblems and other little bits and pieces here and there. If you want to build a pretty car get the G over the Z, if you want to build a fun to drive PURE SPORTS CAR that looks great (my Z turns heads everywhere I go, I guess it's all the carbon fiber) get the Z. PS: the G interior while luxurious is not "sporty" G's can where the skyline badge which is really really really (cannot stress it enough) tacky. Sit one second in the Z and you'll quickly notice and the cockpit was designed for sporty driving, I love the big center tach a la Ferrari and GTR. |

To me, there really isn't as big of a gab between the Z and the G in this area as there used to be. |
I had a 2004 G35 Coupe 6MT, then a 2008 G37 Coupe 6MT, and just got a 2009 370Z Touring Sport 6MT.
The 2004 G35 was my favorite (in it's time) but looks so dated now. If there were more revisions to the G37, I may have leased another... but didn't want the same EXACT thing again... so ended up BUYING the Z (2009 leftover). It really depends what you want. When I got my 2004 G35, I considered the 350Z... but liked the exterior of the G35 much better and thought the interior of the 350Z was pretty bad. Really, I wasn't a big fan of the 350Z in general. I got my G37 shortly before the 370Z was released... and have always said I wanted the 370Z next. The exterior of the 370Z is the best of all I've had. The interior, while it's MUCH better than the 350Z IMO.. doesn't compare to the G37 interior, which was a PERFECT mix of sport and luxury. I miss the nice seats in the G, and am not a huge fan of some of the details of the 370Z... one being the shade of orange used... (the purple and white in the G was AWESOME) and also, the huge orange ring around the tach is annoying... I'm sure I just need to get more used to the interior. Anyway... I'm going on and on... obviously, the 370Z is more for strictly sport and driving... whereas the G37 covers a lot of that, but dives a little more into the luxury and having more space (seats, etc). I do miss having a moonroof and I did really get used to having a backup camera (which will be on the 2011 370Zs). Like someone else said, the audio quality is MUCH better in the G and the exhaust sounds better, as well. I am very happy with my 370Z so far. I need to tint the windows. I may put spacers on too. I might not change the suspension at all. I used Tein S Tech springs on the G35, Tein H Tech on my G37 and also 15mm spacers on the G37... which I may put on the Z. I'm hoping I don't want to lower the Z. We'll see... |
About a month ago, I was in a similar dilemma. I narrowed it down to several cars, and the fact of having a backseat and AWD spec was making the G37 a favorable choice. However, I stuck to my guns because I really liked the body lines of the 370Z specifically and done the cross-breed sedan sports car already; i.e. 330i and WRX.
Just my own personal biased feelings..everytime I see a G37 up close nowadays, I pat myself on making the right choice for me. I really dislike the appearance compared to the Z. If I needed a DD with backseats and had a family, the G would probably win-out; but I am sure I would've talked myself into a 335x, if that was the case. :p |
the 370z is winning on a 370z forum no way !
