Default 400zx?

The question that I've been asking myself more and more often lately is this.

What if Nissan instead of doing the 370z design literally started reproducing the original Datsun 240z's but up to today's standards. Literally the looks would be IDENTICAL to the 240z except call it the 400zx with a 4.0L v8 engine with a sequential turbo setup (as opposed to the parallel set up with the 300zx I believe).

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 370z and it's amazing but there was this nagging thought in the back of my head as to why this thing isn't any faster? More and more cars are "going turbo" or even forced induction in general and I think with a "stronger powerplant" the 370z wouldn't need a Porsche as it's goal .

Let's face it ladies and gentleman. We've entered another "horsepower age" where Camry's come with 260+ horsepower and the Mustang GT which has been underpowered for a million years is now outperforming all of it's competition (Ok maybe that's slightly exaggerated...).

Plus... it's also the "retro" age where everything is retro styled.

I think to answer your question in the simplest form would be that more and more cars are going "green". A turbo'd 4.0 V8 isn't exactaly going to be doing it's part when it comes to emission and mpg economy.

We actually have a pretty modern and efficient powerplant in the 370 and for the weight compared to other cars (like that Canadian Camaro), it's leading the charge in power to weight ratio.

When all sorts of magazines and independent tests are calling it the "car of the year" and "best performance for the money", it probably stands to reason that the car isn't all that bad off.

Not a fan of retro styling... like the idea of a 400Z tho'

Not the 2011! Hope this isn't old news!

2011 Nissan 370Z Coupe/NISMO 370Z
Now entering the third year of its latest generation design, the 2011 Nissan 370Z Coupe remains one of the most vibrant and dynamic sports cars available in North America. The 370Z Coupe is again available in three models, 370Z Coupe and 370Z Coupe Touring and the NISMO 370Z, which features unique performance and design attributes.

Enhancements for the new model year are limited to the addition of one new exterior color, Gun Metallic, and the addition of RearView Monitor to the 370Z Touring’s optional Navigation Package.

The 370Z and 370Z Touring are each available with a standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL) and choice of 6-speed manual transmission with an available SynchroRev Match™ synchronized downshift rev matching system or a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Crisp handling is provided by a refined 4-wheel independent suspension.

The dramatic 370Z interior utilizes an innovative driver-centric three-layer design which groups items by how a driver sees information, operates the controls and is held in place – so drivers feel completely connected and engaged whenever and wherever they drive.

Available technology features include the enhanced Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System with 7-inch VGA touch-sensitive display, 9.3GB Music Box®, USB connectivity and iPod connection, XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic Information and XM NavWeather™ (XM subscription required, sold separately), automatic phonebook download (select phones) and Bluetooth Streaming Audio; Nissan Intelligent Key™ and a Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System.

The limited production NISMO 370Z features 350 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque, exclusive H-configured exhaust system design, racing-inspired exterior and interior styling, a NISMO-tuned suspension and special super-lightweight forged alloy wheels. As expected of a true performance machine, the NISMO 370Z is offered with only one transmission – a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission with SynchroRev Match™.

The NISMO 370Z also features unique 5-spoke 19-inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels mounted with Yokohama ADVAN Sport Y-rated high-performance tires, Nissan Sport Brakes and a Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VLSD).

The NISMO 370Z stands out from the 370Z and 370Z Touring with functional and fully integrated aerodynamic body pieces (including an extended front nose, fully integrated chin spoiler, side sills, a unique rear and functional rear spoiler). The interior includes NISMO logo seats with black and red fabric and red stitching, a NISMO tachometer, aluminum trimmed pedals and serialized plaque of authenticity.

The 2011 370Z Coupe and NISMO 370Z go on sale in October 2010.

only thing i can see happening to the Z34 anytime soon is Nissan switching to a direct injection version of the VQ37VHR during a mid-model refresh. that could push well over 350hp easy and probably boost mpg by at least 1 in the city and highway. but with all the issues DI has been having recently (especially turbo'd engines) i'd be kinda skiddish of it in a Z until it's been put through it's paces.

if you are speaking of the future "Z35" model, then who knows but most likely we will see a D.I. 6 cyl mild hybrid. battery assist but most likely not a full hybrid

Hmmm... one wonders just how different "Gun Metallic" will be from the other grey variants...

A rearview camera? They should put in a front cam for track days!

I don't mind hybrids.

What is wrong with the same engine but it having a electrical engine that helps it with using less fuel and going full electric in the city and the engine helping with torque during sporty driving possibly fixing the lack of low rev torque

In other countries you can have a front camera or even a split front camera.

One major problem, the battery.
If you want to be environmental nut that is fine, but if you for one second think the current batteries are "efficient" you are mistaken. It takes way to much power to produce batteries still and we are only up to around 80%(ish) of being able to reuse them fully.

I had 2007 honda civic hybrid and i sold it because it was time to change the battery and it cost $3000 for just the battery. I don't know if other companies hybrid's battery cost that much or not but i won't buy hybrid again.

do we honestly CARE if the battery improving our engine is eco or anything.

I just care about it improving the torque.
