Poll: Do you prefer the Synchro Rev or with it Off?

I prefer it off! I feel like it revs harder and I can shift more smoothly. They say the synchro rev helps shift smoother, but I like it off! what are your opinions?

djpathfinder 06-05-2010 07:36 PM

I like it on. I haven't learned how to heel-toe downshift because I don't feel comfortable or safe to practice on public roads so synchro-rev match is on...love the way it sounds and downshifts are smoother.

craniac24 06-05-2010 08:53 PM

I never thought I'd use it...ever. Now I'm hooked and I never turn it off.

You should actually use the poll feature. I'm curious what other people think!

TreeSemdyZee 06-05-2010 10:21 PM

Always on. Except of course when I disconnect the battery cable and forget to turn on the SRM afterwards. Kind of a serious shock when you go to downshift the first time. :icon17:
It goes something like this: Downshift. @##**@#*!!!

LunaZ 06-06-2010 01:09 PM

Where's the poll?

I'm hooked on Synchro-Rev. It's just so nifty and I'm surprised it wasn't put on a production car before 2009.
That said, I'm from the old school and I know how to heel-toe, so I poo-poo'ed the idea of Synchro-Rev when the 370Z was introduced. After two months in my Z, a ride in my Mazdaspeed3 showed me I was already getting a little rusty! :icon14:

import111 06-06-2010 07:43 PM

Off. Never used it once and I don't plan to.

370Zsteve 06-06-2010 07:48 PM

SRM kicks A$$

WShade 06-06-2010 08:38 PM

On!

You're missing out! :driving:

tomnavone 06-06-2010 11:40 PM

ON!

Boost_lee 06-07-2010 12:22 AM

On

and where's the poll?

AK370Z 06-07-2010 12:38 AM

I have ONLY turned SRM Off maybe 3 times since I left the dealer last year. Absolutely amazing feature offered by Nissan.

P.S. Poll reflects all votes posted in this thread.

LaBron 06-07-2010 12:56 AM

Sorry! I'm kind of new to the forum so when I posted this thread as a "poll" I didn't know I could make it as an actual voting poll from the options! Thanks AK for having my back on this! By the way, I got my decals in! Nice! Thx!

You're welcome. I really can't take full credit. One of the member send me a pm about this thread to bring it to my attention.

Did you put them on the car? Where are the picture?

wolf41779 06-07-2010 01:05 AM

On, I turned it off last week to see if I could still heel toe like I could in my WRX. I could manage, but it wasnt nearly as smooth as the SRM. It will stay on FTW!

VinZ 06-07-2010 02:49 AM

I usually leave it off. I drive in alot of traffic to and from work and it freaks other drivers out hearing my hfc & catback exhaust reving while coming up to stops. :p

That's the other thing I like about it.
Hey, it's not me... it's the car!

Sounds like a great reason to leave it on.

spearfish25 06-07-2010 07:26 AM

Mine is usually on. The last week or so I've turned it off periodically as I'd like to think I can heel-toe still. Also, my exhaust gives some since burlbes on the decel when SRM is off, most likely because I'm letting the revs drop more than SRM does. It's audibly pleasant but I can't match SRM for consistency (who really can?). So, it's back on now. I will say that it's an absolute pleasure to heel-toe yourself and get the shift perfect.

PapoZalsa 06-07-2010 07:41 AM

ON, used to it by now.

rj45 06-07-2010 09:34 AM

SRM also helps smooth out upshifting. It won't let the revs fall below the rpm that the next gear requires at the given road speed . So, the driver can take more time completing the shift without getting jerked forward when releasing the clutch pedal. It takes some of the timing/throttle-work out of smooth shifting.

Of course, a skilled driver can upshift smoothly without SRM, but it's a nice feature when you're feeling a bit lazy. IMO, it's good to turn SRM off from time to time so you stay in practice. Besides, what skilled driver doesn't like blipping on downshifts or take pride in smooth upshifts? It's fun and rewarding.

zZSportZz 06-07-2010 10:05 AM

Definately on!! I love sounding like a d-bag coming to stops at a light haha
:tup::tup:

Especially when there is a popo sitting at the light too...

kenchan 06-07-2010 11:00 AM

ive gotten use to it ON, so i just leave it on. typically i do my own heel and toe on my MT cars. both my dd and G are MT.

pompey 06-07-2010 11:13 AM

of most the time.

Lloydy 06-07-2010 11:15 AM

Prefer it on

pulpz 06-07-2010 12:12 PM

Off most of the time.

For those of you who leave it on all the time - turn it off and you'll realize how sloppy your down and up shifts are. lol

vipor 06-07-2010 12:20 PM

^ I leave mine on so I don't have to worry about my down shifts.

Up shifts are pretty much the same unless I take my sweet ass time.

I already realized that with the 350Z I had. :D

SkyZ 06-07-2010 07:48 PM

its just such a great too on day to day driving, makes everything so much smoother. always on unless i feel like doing the heel and toe manually.

LaBron 06-08-2010 10:05 PM

I find that it depends on the driving circumstances i'm in! If i'm in high traffic or slow moving or lots of stops signs or lights then I prefer it on. If i'm on a straight away or wanting a faster take off and quicker up or down shift I prefer it off! That's just me! When I first got it I always had it on to get used to it, but now a month later, I prefer off. On is still cool though!!

Jeffblue 06-08-2010 10:12 PM

I actually drive around with a pen, notebook, and calculator and calculate exactly what engine speed i need to rev to based on how fast i am going and in what gear i intend to shift into. You want to see quick shifting? come for a ride with me!

Premo34WV 06-09-2010 08:58 AM

I keep it on, which has spoiled me a bit, but i do have one grudge with the SRM.....it maintains speed, or keeps the rpm's up, when downshifting to around 4-5000 rpm. (not every time though) usually while in a turn. pretty dangerous actually

I started a thread about this a while back but no cause or solution has been found.

also i like to shift to neutral sometimes when decelerating to a stop instead of downshifting, but when i do that the rpm's scream to 5 or 6000 expecting me to shift from 6th to 3rd or something. not very pleasant

Sounds like you're downshifting too early. Wait for RPMs to fall to 2500 or less and then shift down...shouldn't have any problems then.

why not just keep it in gear until around 20 mph. even if you are cruising in 4,5,6, it will aid in stopping, save your breaks, and it wont wear out your driveline any faster. i'm not saying downshift to slow down. i'm just saying keep it in gear, brake like you would if you were driving an auto, and when you're about to come to a stop or slow roll just clutch and brake, put it in neutral or 1st and wait for the green light. coasting in neutral is kind of dangerous. if out of nowhere some dbag came up fast in your rear view and was about to rear end you, you'd be screwed.

klubbheads 06-09-2010 01:16 PM

Only turned it on 3 times. Twice doing a hard canyon run and comparing it with my skill with it on and off and the other time i was dead tired at night coming home and just turned it on so all i have to do is just clutch and shift.

I could get hooked on it and lose my foot "touch", that is why i dont turn it on.

BTW OP: You don't fool yourself :), you cant be better than syncro. You can be as good at times but u cant be better because its revmatches are perfect.

wishihadnav 06-09-2010 02:57 PM

off.

crazyyankfan 01-23-2012 07:55 PM

Absolutely agree with you on the last part. I personally keep it on all the time. Only turned it off couple times since I got the car to see if I can shift smoothly enough w/out it, and the answer is...never. There's just simply no way a driver can match the engine rev as well as the computer.

tranceformer 01-23-2012 08:35 PM

I used to keep it on all the time but now I usually have it turned off because of the 4.08 gears. The gears ruin it, on the downshift and the upshift. I'm sure it will only get worse with a more aggressive clutch. I wonder if a tuner can adjust the the SRM feature to compensate for the gears?

LMBmikeZ 01-23-2012 08:45 PM

I normally keep it on. But that is interesting that the 4.08s mess with it. Good to know because the 4.08s I am interested in getting in the future. I will have to look into this more.

It's not major, just maybe 200 rpm off - enough to irritate me.

But don't get me wrong, the gears MORE than make up for the minor inconvenience.
