I would definitely take the check from the insurance company and try to buy your replacement wheels via a private sale. You'd probably even end up with some cash in your pocket if you do it that way.

Agreed, lost of us are selling mint sets of OEM wheels for far less than Nissan! :happydance:

Jeffblue 06-20-2010 02:18 PM

Insurance bill for 2 replacement wheels, tires, tpms, + towing/allignment/ making sure no other damage= 3750

Not that this was your fault by any means but this is exactly why I garage my car all the time. It doesn't fix the problem, in fact my house was broken in to and cars stolen from garage a few years ago...but the point is the less you leave out and accessible the more likelihood you won't see this happen to you.

Sorry to hear yet another story of someone leaving the car parked out in their driveway or street and having rims stolen. This definitely isn't the first time we've seen this...people just don't think it will ever happen to them...till it does. :(

might have to get a pit bull and tie it to the car at night.

I was in my last month of college when I bought the car home. After I graduated I came home and I had work that Monday, I planned on garaging the car from the very begining, and I was going to clean out the garage that nex weekend, however, 3 days after getting pmr, this happened. I didn't have time to clean the garage or get an alarm installed in that time. The car now goes in the garage, and has a viper alarm installed. Thieves never rest.

I'm just concerned if I go stay at my girlfriend's place and have to leave it in her driveway/ on the street.... But I should be ok with the alarm with tilt sensor and wheel locks right?

Jeffblue 06-20-2010 03:19 PM

In fact, now I'm finding myself just totally paranoid about leaving my car anywhere, like going to the movies, mall, dinner, friends houses. I mean, I didn't count on being so paranoid about having my car being vandalized/wheels stolen. I have all the security measures in place, do you guys think I'm safe from this happening again?(I don't really go anywhere shady, just places anyone else would go like the movies or the mall, you think my car is pretty safe with the viper alarm/smart start/wheel locks?

You know I feel the same! It !@#$ing pisses me off I can't just live my life and enjoy my stuff. All in fear of some stupid a$$ hole messing with my car or ripping me off. Even going out to see a late movie or going out downtown to a bar, I never take my Z anymore! (Take my old boring SUV)

I had a GPS stolen in Oct, a smash and grab. Now I am paranoid on leaving it in my car. There are times I just leave it at home and I ended up needing to use it after all and got lost and was pissing a storm and was so !@#$ing mad, that I can't even use my own sh!t! (Didn't bring it because I did not want to carry it with me walking around a lake) It just makes me sick and I wish I could just smash someones head in for messing with someone elses property. Yes I am mad and need counceling! :ughdance:

You know if they want them they got'em.

Whats hard to understand is the sports package is a 3000 upgrade
but the wheels are 975.00 each! and the package includes more than
just the rims.

Well true, the wheels are worth 975 each, however, the only people actually paying that are insurance companies. NO one is going to buy our OEM rays even BRAND new for 975. So yes, the sports package is 3000, and the wheels supposedly cost 975, but no one pays that for them. Not the mention the a$$holes that steal them usually dump the whole set for like 1000 dollars!

trust me, i feel paranoid all the time too. the truth of the matter is, MOST people do not have wheel locks, MOST people do not have security. and those are the people that get taken advantage of.... exactly like you did. Now you're not like most.

Good Point, I guess the idea is, if my alarm starts going off they'll leave and victimize an easier target. However, if my alarm goes off i will know, no matter how far i am bc of the viper smart start :)

I agree 100%. I work hard to get nice things and I don't need some jackA$$ coming along to screw it up or take it!

If you catch someone stealing your stuff you should be able to take a baseball bat to them!!!

OMG37 06-22-2010 12:05 AM

Sometimes we all have to learn the hard way that in today's society we have to spend money just to protect the luxuries we work hard for.

I just hope that people see these kinds of stories and learn from them and become less ignorant and be proactive so it doesn't happen to them.

I'm ashamed to say I have friends that knew about what happened to me, didn't learn from it...then had the same thing happen to them.

Agreed. I asked the judge if I could just get 20 minutes in a closed room with one of the three guys caught in my case.

What kind of member do you have to be in order to take the picture someone else posted of a carbon fiber wheel and replace it with one of a kitten?

spinhead 06-24-2010 12:52 PM

Is there a serial number on the wheels that can be tied to the VIN somehow?

vividracing 06-24-2010 04:20 PM

I'm sorry that happened, those pics are disturbing!

Thanks for the sympathy. however, later that day i actually brought the car to have it dyno'd I was making 315bhp (Brick horse power). I'm not sure if you know the calcuation, but 1 brick horsepower = 35 wheel horsepower.

As far as a serial number is concerned. There is nothing. I would recommend etching something to uniquely identify your wheels in a discrete location. Then you can actually prove they are yours if they are stolen.

3SeventyZ 06-25-2010 04:18 PM

Man that's a sad sight to see..

AHHAHAHAHA.... Not laughing at you, but just the fact you mentioned getting a pet tiger. My friend's husband who is also a deputy sheriff just got his car broken into in our parking garage. I got worried and said I should get a pet tiger to protect my new Z. She said that would be a great idea and to save money we could feed it Section 8 tenants.

A brick horse power? :ugh2: Man, you need hell of a lot of ponies to pull all those bricks from under your car

Here are the pics with the 18x8.5 +45 Chrome wheels i took off my altima. i needed to put something on to get it on the truck and they were just handy. They are hellatucked, not pretty.

or if you know where he lives burn his to the ground while he's asleep, or on the legal side get PI to trace back the cell number snoop around a little take some photos of dude in the act, and turn him in. sure you'd be out a few thousand to have a full time tail on the guy for a couple weeks but you'd have him.

Oh and on a side note just Piss you off I've had my car in the air wheels on on jackstands 6" off the ground for the last week in my driveway (yes 19" rays) and the only thing that has happened was that the neighbor kid asked me if he could check out my car (he's 12 so no worries there). I don't want to say it but i kinda hope someone steals my wheels so i can get a freakin set of volks(not the reason it's in the air though mother f***ing oil cooler failure facked my engine)

Or you could install a tripwire connected to taser with pressure switch behind rim.

rha600 06-30-2010 09:21 AM

Jeffblue, sorry to see those pics. Same thing happened to my Jeep back in April.

We had it all on video too, 2:00am in the morning 3 guys came into the driveway, jacked the jeep up, took all four wheels and were gone in 10 minutes. They set the truck down on garden landscaping type bricks on the rotors. Insurance check was $8500 after my deductable. :(

I typically drive my civic when I go to the movies and that sort of thing (that has been broken into as well at the movies). That's the one thing that will suck when I upgrade it to a 370, I won't have a "beater" to drive.

oh, btw....about etching something. When I got the new wheels I etched "Stolen! These wheels belong to...please call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX if these are found"

I figured if the theives sell the wheels/tires, eventually that person is going to need new ones and just maybe the guy at the tire store will be honest. Also, if the cops ever do find the, they will either have that etched inside or will have a really big area that's been sanded down.

Sibze 06-30-2010 09:26 AM

lol Jeffblue, those pics look great!

Sorry I haven't read through all the pages. When do you expect to get new ones?

Unfortunately, the person who purchases the stolen wheels will not have good title. Therefore, if they were to buy your wheels and then realize they were stolen, if they did the right thing they'd be out their money and out the wheels. The only way it would work out is if the person saw it when they went to buy them and then called you. I think doing something more inconspicuous might be better, like some sort of serial number, or your plate number, but do it in a uniform way so that the thief wouldn't just think to sand it down right away.

as far as your experience, did anything come of the tape? did the police do anyting? did they catch them? my family thought about putting up surveilance cameras, but realized that all it would mean is we'd get it on video, and then the police still wouldn't do anything.

rha600 06-30-2010 09:43 AM

well in my case the tires are on the wheels and the etching is inside the tire...so the person buying the wheels/tires won't see the etching. I'm hoping that when the tires wear down and they get new ones they will go to the local Sears or Goodyear place and HOPEFULLY the guy doing the work will see it.

No, I mean the video does show a white panel van and a dark colored (it was night and on the IR camera) sedan go buy just before and just after they took the wheels. Not a single car drove past other than those two in a 5 hour window that we watched. anyway, the video shows the guys but like I told the cop, it's not like they are wearing name tags so yeah, it shows them, but until they get caught for something else it's not really helping us. :(

Jeffblue 06-30-2010 09:49 AM

yea thats what i figured.

i'm just saying the thing with the tire shop is, if some guy at the tire shop is changing the wheels, he'd probably care more about getting paid by the person who brought the wheels over than ratting them out.

rha600 06-30-2010 11:28 AM

oh I hear ya. That's why I said HOPEFULLY he'd be honest. With any luck maybe he's recently had wheels stolen or something like that.

Bottom line, unless you park the car/truck in Fort Knox, you're never safe.

WarmAndSCSI 08-11-2010 02:38 PM

I'm completely against wheel locks. I garage the nice cars anyway and I'd much rather get my wheels stolen than have an angry, frustrated thief bust out my windows and bang up my car with a breaker bar or jack handle.
