What would you do if you were being tailgated?

(emblem to emblem style)

soCo 04-20-2010 03:11 PM

the only answer is to run them off the road and while they are crashed go and burn the car. Preferably with them inside.

Or just switch lanes.

Sorry...that option is not available...

ianthegreat 04-20-2010 03:16 PM

whoever voted for the last one.. that will get you shot in Texas

antman22 04-20-2010 03:18 PM

this all depends...if im able to change lanes, i will...if its someone that i've noticed has been driving like a **** (swerving, tailgating, etc), i may just stay just to piss them off. if i dont have any room to change lanes and they just feel like being 2 inches from me, i usually flick my emergency lights which gives them enough fear to back up.

sometimes i opt to deploy the oil slicks or the tire spikes too. that's quite effective.

nogoodname 04-20-2010 03:19 PM

Hit the brakes.

tettes 04-20-2010 03:32 PM

I was always taught to tap your brakes/flash your brake lights to let the person know they're too close. But certainly don't slam on your brakes...unless you're looking to get rear-ended.

The other option is to just switch lanes.

Either way, I don't play games on the road with my car. I definitely don't try to piss the driver off...sounds like a recipe for disaster. If the person doesn't know it's not ok to tailgate, you're certainly not going to teach them that lesson in that moment, imo.

kielbasa16 04-20-2010 03:32 PM

I mean its basic drivers ed man, someone tailgates you then move out of their way. Its a much smarter option than slamming your breaks or speeding up whether its a cop doing the tailgating or any other person. If there is no lane to change to then slow down, put on you blinker and pull over for a second. I would much rather get to my destination 20 seconds later than start a dumb fight with a drunk driver or end up with a ticket. There are also proven ways to greatly lessen the chances of getting a ticket if you do get pulled over, just do some research. Works for some cops, others just need to hit that quota, but you may as well try rather than make it immediately clear to the officer that youre pissed off he pulled you over for doing something explicitly illegal.

elmz 04-20-2010 03:35 PM

I usually switch lanes and let he/she by. But if I'm in a foul mood, I switch lanes, let them by, then tailgate them so they know what its like.

FuszNissan 04-20-2010 03:38 PM

Brake Check!

YamahaR6 04-20-2010 03:41 PM

Of course the best way to avoid any dilemmas is to move to another lane or even moving your car into gravel if another lane is not available and even getting out of the car and warning other drivers holding a sign saying "Beware of tailgater".

But we are not in a perfect world, if everyone was that nice in the first place, the tailgater wouldn't exist.

vipor 04-20-2010 03:45 PM

If there's an open lane I just move out of the way. I try to be mindful and check my rear once in a while (as I hope others will when I'm coming up behind them)

tonybui 04-20-2010 03:46 PM

I would move over if there's a spot. If not, I would just go by the speed limit and that person needs yo move if they want to pass me

Phrausty 04-20-2010 03:47 PM

Flipping them off is just childish, I would usually just move out of the way and switch to another lane, but if they still insist on tailgating me, I'll probably do a light brakecheck them to tell them to back the **** up.

I did that once to a guy in a Durango. He has his oh s**t moment, brakes, swerves, nearly crashes due to his own stupidity. He was pissed. Stupid people don't learn, and there's no point trying to teach them.

NewlyIMPORTed 04-20-2010 03:58 PM

Break checking is illegal

When I'm in the Z I accelerate, If I'm in the Titan, its generally a good time to watch people **** down both legs when I lock up all four 37 inch tires. Titan rapidly decelerating + huge drop hitch = new front end of car for them at their expense.

I like your style!

6spd 04-20-2010 04:20 PM

I wait for them to change lanes and go around. Why should I inconvenience myself for them?

4r3s 04-20-2010 04:24 PM

I usually let off the gas so its a nice irratating slow deaccelaration which forces them to slow down. Then when they get the chance to try and pass me I don't let that happen. rinse and repeat.

In my previous car on the way to work some b*tch was riding my arse and I didn't do anything for a while and then I noticed she was taking a drink of whatever she had and so I decided it was a good time for a brake check. Im thinking it was something hot bc she stopped tailgating me and pulled off onto the shoulder. serves her right. Thing that gets me was there was no where to go on 695 it was congested but atleast moving so Im not sure what riding my arse was accomplishing.

Dembflyr 04-20-2010 04:35 PM

I used to do the brake check. Now if I can I move over I do. If I see an aggressive driver coming up I move out of the way. If I am stuck and cannot move I just let off the gas so they have to slow a bit.
I do not do the ABS test anymore. That was in my younger days. Boy you shoulda seen those facial expressions.
What I have found is that most who tailgate have NO idea that they are being dangerous and disrespectful. Just let em go if they are in that much of a hurry.
However I am constantly surprised that there aren't rear end collisions on every street.

I do the same and I only try and drive in the left hand lane if I am actively passing someone. I always feel like an *** if I don't notice the traffic coming up behind me.

dad 04-20-2010 04:42 PM

Flipping them off-------------------------You never know if they have a gun on them! Take a chance at getting shot at, or shot, "no thank you"!

I reduce my speed 3 or 4 mph, if they want around you, they will go! Works just about all the time.

act like you're putting makeup on and start swirving all over the place.

RedDevil 04-20-2010 05:00 PM

yeah, no point in putting yourself in danger...although, if I'm getting tailgated, I usually just think they need some of my windshield washer fluid....

LateralG'z 04-20-2010 05:02 PM

smash my brakes so they wreck their car and have to buy me a new rear end.

antman22 04-20-2010 05:05 PM

some of these responses are hilarious...ya know, i might just start tossing marbles out the window....that's gotta be a good deterrent right? haha

im obviously kidding...

sorta....:rofl2:

4r3s 04-20-2010 05:09 PM

my buddy, when hes on his bike, drops pennies when people tailgate him

Zigen5 04-20-2010 05:11 PM

I usually slow to a crawl....

ZKindaGuy 04-20-2010 05:33 PM

Depends how I feel for that day...if I am in a bad mood you will get the brakes...if I am in a good mood you get a pass and I change lanes.

ZKindaGuy 04-20-2010 05:35 PM

gumpy 04-20-2010 06:32 PM

none of the above, I ignore then and keep doing what i'm doing, if they're desperate they'll overtake me by changing lanes.

SkyZ 04-20-2010 07:01 PM

i usually dont do anything, dont speed up, dont slow down. i just maintain speed and usually at the first opportunity they'll pull to the next lane and roar past.

shadow2k 04-20-2010 07:10 PM

I don't drive the Z slow enough to be tailgated.

But when I drive the beater, I move out of the way. If I can't move, I tap the break lights. I've never had anyone continue to tailgate me after I do that, it doesn't piss anyone off, and it causes no harm. I move first chance I get, or slow down so they can pass.

I know how annoying it is to be stuck behind the rolling roadblock when I'm in the Z. So if you are one of these jackoffs that doesn't move...think about the next time someone is blocking your path, and get the F out of the way.

d02808045 04-20-2010 09:07 PM

Depend on which lane they are tailgating...if they did it on the far left lane, i will try to change lane to let them pass by...but if i'm on the right far lane and they tailgating me, that will piss me off....i'll do brake check/slow down....
