370Z for daily commute, good idea?

how many of you here use your Zs for daily commute? any comments?

vipor 03-07-2010 11:48 PM

I drive mine every day and beyond having to deal with the wear and tear attributed to that level of use it's great.

Only if you like to be happy when you drive:tup:

~1 year old, +20k miles due to somewhat daily commute and really like this car.

Red370 03-07-2010 11:57 PM

Every damn day buddy, every damn DAY! just under 11k, had it since last july.

nuTinmuch 03-07-2010 11:59 PM

Drive it daily.

Drove it through winter, too. Didn't mind at all.

antman22 03-08-2010 12:01 AM

its a daily driver for me...seems to be working out pretty well so far :)

Pharmacist 03-08-2010 12:11 AM

drive mine everyday, sun, rain, snow, summer, winter, anytime

Trips 03-08-2010 12:13 AM

Isn't there enough threads on this?

OMGWTFBBQ 03-08-2010 12:39 AM

I daily drive mine. To school. To home. To random road trips. The Z goes with me EVERYWHERE!

I don't drive too much though. I have a tad over 8k on the odometer and I've had it since May 2, 2009. :D

Red370 03-08-2010 01:10 AM

^ Oh My God, What the fu@k barbeque?

Mr Ed 03-08-2010 02:31 AM

weekend car for me.

had it since July 2009 and got 3,600kms on the clock!

Pheonix 03-08-2010 02:34 AM

It's a (mostly) daily driver for me. I didn't intend on it when I got her, thought I'd spend more time in the other car to preserve mileage in the Z...but somehow I have to fight to get myself back in that other car now.

schrute 03-08-2010 02:44 AM

11k in 7 months. I drive mine everyday and enjoy it, especially the freeway ramps.

gumpy 03-08-2010 03:32 AM

Daily driver for me,

on certain stretches of road the tyre road can be overwhelming...

That aside, it's awesome...

Gaiiden 03-08-2010 03:50 AM

if I could afford another car, and I could stand to drive that instead of my Z, it would def be a weekend car. But I love driving it too much and can't afford another car (yet). And besides if I did get a second car than that would be my weekend car, lol.

I agree with vipor - just understand & accept ahead of time the consequences of driving it daily and you'll be fine. I mean, isn't Simon Cowell's daily driver a frakking Veyron?

Mr Ed 03-08-2010 04:52 AM

as a daily drive in my view - its crap.

you got to be careful backing out due to the blind spots, the front is too tall and you could hit things, and you could grind the rims.

best left to the weekend for a nice long cruise...

********. only crap drivers have those problems no offense.

I can see just fine out the back. I have no problems with the front

and you could grind pretty much every rim on any car

If these are your problems driving the Z as a DD, you would have similar problems with any car.

PEBSWAS (problem exists between steering wheel and seat)

My Z is my DD and I love it. My only negative is I can't use it for family trips. If there was enough room to shove 3 or 4 suitcases and 2 dogs in the back, I would use this car for *everything*. :happydance:

stlgrym3 03-08-2010 07:54 AM

thanks for the replies. how's the real life gas mileage around town? according to fueleconomy.gov it's better than the EVO X and even slightly better than my wife's new TL 3.5

I drive through a lot of stop and go and my MPG sits around 20-21.

that's not bad at all. i'm getting those numbers in my '04 Accord V6 currently.

gh0st3794 03-08-2010 08:13 AM

I used to have an 07 TL as my dd and my gsxr 600 as my weekend toy. I've since traded the TL in for the Z, and now have 2 somewhat impractical dd's. Being that the Z is the more practical of the two, it's the one I use for day to day use. It's definitely not as comfy/equipped as the TL was, but it sure is a lot more fun to drive. Only thing that worries me is the increased wear and tear that a dd usually accumulates.

I in no way have a light foot and I still average ~19mpg. That's with a track weekend included.

Just looked it up, 18.49mpg. Max 22.04, min 9.85 (track weekend)

SiXK 03-08-2010 08:39 AM

I didn't spend the money for this car to drive a pickup or some sedan every day, what fun is that? these cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed, then one day, before the miles pile up too high, you can retire and restore and enjoy for as long as you want. But yeah, I am driving my Z every day.

vipor 03-08-2010 08:49 AM

Well of course you are. You've got a TT in the garage  rofl

I've made it up to 520 miles on a tank, getting 31 mpg on the way to Albuquerque and back, thats almost as good as some hybrids.

Red370 03-08-2010 08:52 AM

And the proof, speed average went down because i was driving through town towards the end, but you get the picture.

Highway cruising @ 80-90. Included some around-town driving too.

Man what have you driven before this, the mega window car from back in the day, what was that the Pacer? Its an easy car to drive,a djust the mirrors and seats right and all is good. You do have to turn your head when turning and changing lanes, I think some people forget that and think the mirror is the tell all. This isnt going to be a classic car so I dont see babying it like one, so drive it and enjoy it. When its done get another car.

mick 03-08-2010 09:24 AM

the answer depends on how OCD you are about cars in general :)
by strict definition, a daily driver car is a car that you don't care much about, appearance wise (ie, dings, dents, scratches would not bother you) but it seems that the majority of forum members do care.

so, sure you can drive the 370z every day but as a daily driver, there are better cars for that purpose.

Man when I looked it up it came up with driving a VW to school, work etc. every day. If you only have one car and you drive it everyday then its a daily driver too.

my point was you would be a less worried person if you had a vw as a daily driver -- but sure, if you can drive the z every day if you have to :)

Matt 03-08-2010 09:45 AM

The MPG is what I expected, considering my average mph is 35. My gauge is showing an average of 17.9 mpg currently, but I hardly ever get to cruise above 60mph for very long.

You would think with all the stop and go, traffic lights, etc., I'd be tired of a 6 speed by now....nope!

Hugoneus 03-08-2010 09:47 AM

The Z is my every day car. Those who say that every day cars are cars that you don't care about must not be very good drivers.

Why would I pay 40k for a car and then leave it in the garage for the whole week?! It is not going to appreciate, it will only depreciate in value.

I drive it to work every morning and I cant wait to get in the car! It brings a smile to my face when I get to work and I am giddy with excitement to drive it after work.

I recommend the box from Nissan, you should get that.

This illustrates that the Z is a different car for different people. To many, the Z is a car used on sunny, weekend, cruises. To others, it's the car we can't wait to get into, even if it means 2 hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

rcm2525 03-08-2010 10:10 AM

That's fine but mine is getting driven 110+ miles a day to work and on the weekend it's my bikes. They are just toys to be played with not worshiped. I do that in a little white building down the street.

haha. i fear if i drove the z on a rainy day, the windows might accidentally roll down* and the rain would destroy the interior.

that would definitely ruin my day.

*my windows did roll down by themselves one time while the car was in the garage.

kenchan 03-08-2010 10:18 AM

my z melts in the rain so i only take her out on dry days.
