Is anyone else having a hard time finding a Z

i have been in the market for about 3 months, all i want is a PG Manual with SPRT PKG, i live in LA the second most populated city in the USA and cant seem to find the Z i want car. most the dealerships only have like 4-8 Z's in stock, and its mostly touring and nismo.

i am getting sad :(

kannibul 03-04-2010 04:53 PM

Nope...I have one in my garage.

Also, dealerships having 4-8 in stock - that's a LOT of Z inventory. Think of the many thousands of Nissan dealers. Think that for 2009 there were 10,000 units made for the whole year. (I think)

That means most dealerships, if they were lucky, would have 1...higher volume dealers could have 3-4.

KillerBee370 03-04-2010 05:05 PM

It's because you want the most common... err ummm.. I mean popular color. You should think about something more... umm... vibrant! :stirthepot:

Jeffblue 03-04-2010 05:06 PM

so order one from the dealer. In the time you've spent searching, you could have taken delivery. I ordered mine. its supposed to be here in 3 months. I didn't even bother trying to find mine in a dealer. Although what you want shouldn't be that hard to find. Its kind of ridiculous that its hard to find a manual transmission with a SPORT package on a SPORTS car. right around now is when dealers are placing their orders. if you don't get in on one now you can hope theres one for you when the start coming in in the spring, if there isn't, then you'll have to wait till 2011. OR you can order and guarantee one is waiting for you in june

tsolin01 03-04-2010 05:06 PM

That particular combo might just not be that popular in your area. For me it was difficult to find a fully loaded 2010 6MT Coupe. I'm not really sure how these dealers determine which options to order so it could just be the luck of the draw if your combo is ordered.

Buena Park Nissan has two 2009's in stock your color, but no mention of trans or sports package (they want you to call them). They have eighteen 370Zs.

Damn.... Eighteen Z's in this economy is like having a 20 when you want to get a candy bar from the vending machine

I really don't understand why everyone thinks a car needs to be purchased locally.

I waited till around the end of the month, I got my approval letter through my credit union, went online, and found every dealer in the country that had the exact car I wanted. I emailed everyone with my approval letter and a copy of dealer invoice pricing for the 370z. I told them if they would sell me the car at dealer invoice I would fly out the next day to purchase the vehicle. About 4 out of the 7 contacted me back within 24 hours. 2 of those went $100.00-$200.00 over invoice and the other 2 were $500-$600 over invoice. I went online and determined which dealer out of the 5 was cheaper to Fly to and drive back from and that's the one I chose.

This saved me $3000+ of what all the local dealers would give me. It also allowed me to skip the whole, "hey would you like an undercoat, top coat, anti theft, blah blah garbage with the sale because I had to get the exact amount of the purchase price over the phone to give to my lender to overnight them the check. I flew out the next and enjoyed my 6 hour drive home in my new Z.

Exactly what I did. Drove a little, saved a lot and got exactly the car I wanted. Found a dealer in large, highly competitive, metropolitan market who was willing to sell below invoice because he had that car in stock and was anxious to turn it over. On a $30,000/$40,000 business transaction, a few bucks for a plane ticket and a some joyous hours driving your new car home is a small price to pay (no pun intended) for a good deal. Actually, it's creative business practice in our new world of auto shopping! Take advantage of the opportunity if you can.

Not everyone has the time or patience to fly out to buy a car and drive it back. In my case the cars I wanted were over a days drive back. No way I could afford to do that.

mick 03-04-2010 06:17 PM

i thought i would have problem finding a nismo in the color that i wanted but they dealer had it. i picked it up the next day.

I originally planned to purchase a base+sport but had a hell of a time finding one so I said screw it just got a base when I found a great price

I feel your pain, if you have trouble finding one in LA you must imagine searching Philly, I found one Monty Blue but with all the extras it was like $35,500

SophiaZ 03-04-2010 07:04 PM

Yea.. just order one.

That's true, I made the comment assuming everyone had a free weekend to spare. Reviewing on Car.com and other websites took like 3 hours. I flew out Friday evening and drove home Saturday. If you have a weekend I can promise shopping around will save you money, get you your exact car, or if you get lucky like I did then maybe even both!

Saved around $3000.00

Hotel was about 45.00
Air one way was 110.00
gas back was about 100-150

Regardless it was worth my time for sure.

Hugoneus 03-04-2010 07:08 PM

I had to drive to Meryland to get one. (Info in my signature)

I'm in the same market as you are, looking for PG Manual with SPRT PKG, but I want Touring though haha. Put it in a order for one if you can't find it. Good luck with you finding your car! Maybe we can meet up in future for like car runs or something since you live in LA.

steveg78 03-04-2010 07:55 PM

I started my search last year Apr 1. Gave deposit and no dealer could locate one. They GAVE ME MY MONEY BACK! I searched around on my own but I knew it would be luck of the draw. I was contemplating flying out to Fusz but that's when my fate bug kicked in and told me that if it's that hard to find one there's a reason. Over the year I searched off and on, I wasn't hard up for it once summer was almost over and just last Thurs during a blizzard here, I started checking dealer inventory on nissans website. By chance there was an 09 PG 6spd with Sport in PA (Montgomeryville Nissan). I called them up, hoping it was really still there. Sure enough it was! Picked her up Tues night! I'd say if you're hard pressed to have it for summer, just put an order in now. Then again, you're in LA so you won't have to worry about snow :) Bottom line is it depends on how bad you want the car and what you're willing to do to get it. I was not that hard pressed to get one if it wasn't somewhat local so I didn't have a problem waiting. Good luck on your search. And when you finally get it, you still won't believe you got it!

Parrotguy 03-04-2010 08:41 PM

To the guys who searched nationally, how did you do that? I tried Google for the body code and exterior color, spent several hours searching dealer inventories, but it was haphazard, slow, and for reasons only Google understands, certain dealers keep coming up, and nothing from thousands of other dealers. My dealer says he's looking??? Most frustrating was several dealers leave off key info like interior color, and most don't list options. I'd rather not wait until June, and Roberts VPP expires on 3/31.

Red370 03-04-2010 08:46 PM

Heres how I look at car buying.. dont be afraid to look at stealerships out of town, or even out of state. Get pre approved for a loan, buy a one way ticket, fly there, drive it home, its just that simple. I GUARANTEE someone in this country has the exact car/color/trim you want buddy.

Parrotguy 03-04-2010 08:58 PM

I used the Nissan car finder, but it only allows you to go 100 miles from your zip code. That gave me three pages of dealers, no hits. Mostly automatics. Did you guys start plugging in distant zip codes?

Red370 03-04-2010 09:01 PM

try autotrader dude.

370's are pretty rare here in Australia still. Our major carsales website only has 8 available in my entire state, new and used combined. I haven't actually seen another 370 on the road yet.

1) the RRP here new is about $81k AUD
2) they have only been out for 9 months
3) flying out and driving back isn't practical as it's like a 4-5hr flight interstate.

I was after Carbon Silver but couldn't find one, settled for Brilliant Silver.

A positive point here though is that we only have 1 model available which is all inclusive (sports/audio/nav), 6MT and 7AT of course. So there isn't a even a choice of options, it's everything or no car at all!

PapoZalsa 03-04-2010 09:59 PM

Well that happened to me too. Keep looking, you will probably will have to go out of your area to find one.

dbrs0821 03-05-2010 09:15 AM

Definitely not a problem here in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. The larger dealerships in my area have 6-8. I was at the dealership a couple of weeks ago for my first oil change and I counted six on the lot and three more in the back.

FuszNissan 03-05-2010 09:46 AM

Due to a lot of states being seasonal, Nissan has decided to hold Z inventory until April- May. You will see a big influx of Z units in mid May.

TheSnakeJake 03-05-2010 09:53 AM

i had to drive 2 hours to get mine, because nobody near me had 2010's on the lot. i wanted PG as my first choice, but once i saw the PW i snatched it up...

elmz 03-05-2010 11:12 AM

I got my 09 PG Manual + Sprt Pkg in Irvine back in October. I was actually set on white or red. But they were hard to find at that time, and when I saw the PG in person I had to have it. Try opening yourself up to other colors, you could find that PG is not what you really wanted. I also drove up from SD, so try expanding your search and be willing to drive.

Red370 03-06-2010 09:44 PM

they have 20 at my dealership :)

Parrotguy 03-07-2010 06:39 PM

After a month of looking, I'm getting weary of trying to find a car. The dealer has had no luck finding anything.
If anyone has knowledge of a Touring Roadster Manual trans, (code 42260)in pearl white, wine interior, second choice gray interior, with or without nav and or sport OK, please let me know.

I never knew buying a car could be so difficult. Ordering now means you don't take delivery until near model year end. Wouldn't that be nice? Maybe a leftover Z4?

kielbasa16 03-11-2010 08:53 PM

Im in the same boat and Im not even being quite as particular. Just want base with spts package and there are nonneeee on Long Island. I am not willing to make the jump to touring pricing, and the sports package synchro-rev is something I really want... I think there are some in PA, was hoping I wouldnt have to travel but I guess I may have to.

Check out Montgomeryville Nissan in PA. Was a little over an hour from me in central NJ. I saw a few there. Also ACME Nissan in South Brunswick, NJ. Saw some there on Monday.

No problem, if you go to Montgomeryville ask for Brian C. He's the guy I bought mine from. 5 min negotiation process.

kielbasa16 03-11-2010 09:25 PM

Seeing as you have the setup I am looking for, would you mind shedding some light on the price they gave you? If you dont feel comfortable sharing thats cool.

Parrotguy 03-11-2010 11:08 PM

My dealer here in San Diego received info on their "allocation" from Nissan on the 10th. My understanding is that during this mid month period dealers are able to configure cars going in to production in April, within certain limits, if they have buyers. They called and said they could configure a car with my choices if I put a deposit down, which I did today. The schedule calls for production in April, delivery target is May 10th. It sounds like Nissan is being really tough to deal with. They are being restrictive in what they will produce and ship in an effort to reduce manufacturing costs, so the dealer says. I will miss out on Robert's VPP program - that's a bummer. He gave me a number but we could not find a car anywhere. The dealer had no problem at all with a VPP sale.
If you miss this "allocation" period, you have to wait until next month, as I understand it. Nissan doesn't make this process easy!
