Anyone blow out their speakers?

I was driving today and smelt a pretty bad smell when I was listening to music. I had the volume at about 26, then turned down the volume to see if there was any noise, since the smell was really bad. When I went to turn up the volume, I noticed my sound was about 1/4 as loud and the bass was non-existent. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm assuming the bad smell was burning silicon of the power amplifier. Do you guys think this would be covered under warranty?

Bad smell = the former on your voice coils being fried. Smell like sulfur or burning, rotten eggs?

PapoZalsa 02-16-2010 09:46 PM

26, those speakers were "screaming" bro. I think 20 or 22 is good for me.

fullmonty 02-16-2010 10:03 PM

26? You sure it wasn't hearing damage? I don't think I've had it above 20

Spec Jay 02-16-2010 10:05 PM

im surpirsed i havent. 22 is usually my norm. 26 with the windows down .
full monty. you have a touring. im assuming op has a base

FricFrac 02-17-2010 01:15 AM

Its under warranty - take it in for repair

iceman21_23 02-17-2010 02:02 AM

damn 26, base model here and im usually at 14-16 windows up gets as high as 22 with windows down

Chriz 02-17-2010 02:42 AM

I see it as an excuse to get new and better speakers.:happydance:

m4a1mustang 02-17-2010 06:41 AM

Haha and I think 16 is loud.

370Zsteve 02-17-2010 07:02 AM

26 lmao

semtex 02-17-2010 08:24 AM

I keep my volume at 12. Funny, I actually like to stand a chance of hearing emergency vehicles as they approach.

feelzpwr91 02-17-2010 08:31 AM

do you have base model sport or touring sport? Bose or Factory?

you

yellowZ 02-17-2010 08:44 AM

Well it only goes up to 30, so you were damn near topping it out. Did you have the 3-band EQ adjusted in any way?

farmosh203 02-17-2010 08:47 AM

I always thought my speakers were louder when I first bought the car. I remember only going up to 20 or so when I first bought it. Over time, either my ears became more tolerant to the sound or my speakers got softer. I had the windows down on the highway, so 26 was a little louder than normal listening.

I didn't have the EQ adjusted in any way.

Today on the way driving to work, the FM channels all of the sudden stopped working, I just hear noise now. I'll call the dealer and bring it in.

^^^?

Bose isn't as nice as everyone thinks. I've found their OEM setups to be slightly above mediocre. Nothing special at all.

everyones a smart ***.

its a shame this has happened to so many owners. its ok. i have a pair of zenclosure speaker Spacers ready to go =D

Zsteve 02-17-2010 09:32 AM

I bust my Bose at 30 all the time and with the Kicker amp and 8 inch woofer in the back it sounds great.

mick 02-17-2010 09:58 AM

i don't worry about them speakers as much as the ears of those who would play music that loud :)

eh what you say? My hearing is already on the bad side from my job in the Army and probably from the stereos when I was younger. Plus when I have my stereo all the way up I usually have the windows down too so it doesnt sound as loud then. And the Bose turned all the wau up is loud but not overly loud like some aftermarket ones can get.

Plus if we worried about everything that could be bad for us we would have no fun at all. I know this guy that worries about bad foods, worries about girls and STDs even with condoms, etc.. He lives a very boring life IMO. He might lik eit but man its boring.

elmz 02-17-2010 10:44 AM

Man 26?! I usually have it on 20 at the most and that's with Bass and Treble at +5 already, any higher sounds distorted.

antman22 02-17-2010 10:56 AM

yeah, i can't even fathom the stereo at 26...i think my ears would bleed. i prefer to listen to the engine however, so i usually only have it between 11-15....

TamZ 02-17-2010 11:47 AM

This thread makes me wonder what # I listen to mine on (in 5 months, I never realized there WAS a number LOL!) I know I listen to my music way too loud since I don't have to worry about having the kids in this car :)

Anxious to find out what "my #" is.

It could have smelt like this, I didn't pay too much attention to the type of smell because I was focused on how bad it smelt.

If it smelled that bad, it probably was the speaker. Your amp should be fine. Just replace the speakers (if you go aftermarket, be sure to get the same impedance load) and you'll be good to go!

TamZ 02-17-2010 05:13 PM

Okay...I think I must be way denser than I thought I was. I don't see any numbers, just a line of bars that increase as I turn the volume up. Am I losing it?? :)

P.S. I feel like whenever I post, I'm a thread killer LOL!

we're talking about the stereo on a base 370 hehe. the volume is measured in numbers.

Ahh..well...then ya, I guess dense would be the word for me. :icon14: I didn't realize that. I spent at least a minute spinning the volume control up and down, searching for the numbers. LOL!

Now, I know!

Led Zeppelin at 12 was loud enough for me :)

I don't see his comment on being smart-assed at all. My Bose puts out phenomenal sound at 12-15, anything higher than that is pure overkill/youthful exuberance.

Disclaimer: High-frequency hearing loss from decades of rock/blues guitar in front of a Marshall stack at insane volumes during my younger/dumber days

trent1331 02-18-2010 07:02 PM

So everyone does knows that depending on what your source of audio input is, that volumes even at the same setting could be very different. An ipod at 15 volume is going to be much louder than FM radio at the same volume..

That, and mugh higher it starts stripping out frequencies and distorting.

Slynky 02-18-2010 08:01 PM

Hell, I didn't even know it had numbers on the volume :embarrassed: all I see are little squares getting filled or emptied when I change the volume...

370Zsteve 02-18-2010 08:56 PM

OK, I stand corrected. 18 is perfect volume. Tested with Van Halen.
