A little nippy this morning...

Car always garaged, went down to 20 degrees last night but temp in garage was 65 degrees.

Opened garage door and Pushed start button, started normally.
Left something in house, turned car off went inside.
Roughly 20 minutes later, started car again.

Slowly reved it’s way up (with no help of mine) until it hit rev limiter, then worked it’s way down to idle.

Car is running rock solid as usual, but I had a TPS go bad on me and this is exactly how it started.

Not too concerned right now, but anybody have this happen? I have a Gen III intake and a FI CBE with a revtech tune done by Z1.

I would have freaked out

JARblue 11-14-2019 07:33 PM

Huh? A tire pressure sensor causing engine idle issues? That doesn't make sense to me :icon14:

Hopefully someone else can chime in for you. I've had my idle rev up like that before. Not to redline though. Mine was just dirty MAF/TBs.

redondoaveb 11-14-2019 07:47 PM

TPS- throttle position sensor?

BettyZ 11-14-2019 09:01 PM

That's the Z calling you a cocktease for that quick on/off.

When you said it revved up slowly, are you referring to the initial system self-check where the all the needles on the gauge clusters go to the other side? Or are you talking about when driving but feels like limp mode?

If the latter, I get this from time to time is bc my MAF sensors are dirty (OBD II sensor pulled MAF code), and turn off for 30 seconds and restart and runs like a beast again.

TPS = Throttle Positioning Sensor.

Good point on the MAF. Thanks.

This was after the “sweep” Car was running and just kept revving. Car was screaming! I was getting ready to push the off button when it hit redline and quickly dropped to idle.

Would a dirty MAF throw a CEL? No light and starting/running normally. Just don’t want to go through that again!

Not always. The first thing I'd do is check for any DTCs that may have been thrown.

Cleaning the MAFs is very easy - two screws and the MAF slides right out, spray it down with cleaner, let dry, re-install, do the other side. Takes less than 5 minutes per side. Considering all the problems MAFs can cause and how easy they are to clean, you might want to clean them once a year - or every oil change if you're real finicky (but that's probably overkill).

What’s milk, cookies and a reach around going to do for my car? :icon14:

CALL A PRIEST

Nuke it from orbit; it's the only way to be sure.

A dirty MAF will not always throw a CEL. My CEL comes in every few months and the obd scanner throws a MAF code, which I’ll clear out.

And I assume you didn’t have your foot on the gas pedal when it was redlining? lol I have to ask

No foot on the gas. LOL.

I'd clean the MAFs and see if it repeats itself. They're easy to access.

Just be really careful when cleaning them. There is a thin film layer you don’t want to ruin.

Zyonara91 11-22-2019 04:40 PM

I remember I did the same thing as you once, and when I started my Z after coming back after 20 minutes, the car started and then it just died. I waited and it started it again, then it ran fine. Anyone have anything similar happen? If so what did you do to deal with it?

Cory Gillmore 11-23-2019 12:06 PM

Speaking of CELs, my Z hasn’t thrown one in over a year! Almost makes me worry more lmao.

Kept doing it to me, cleaned the throttle heads and it never happened again.
