I just don't understand why there is so much thread locker on there... you'd think it would have been revised after the first couple of years since dealerships probably had to end up replacing a zillion of them while doing warranty CSC jobs. I guess it's not all that surprising since the CSC hasn't been revised either.

Mine came off with zero effort. Bought the car used with 6.5k on it. Either the PO had an aftermarket knob, or some part of transmission was replaced.

I feel like it's the latter since the shift knob is in pristine condition with no signs of a fight

Hmmmm... I have a short shifter, new shift handle and new boot... do I really need to take the OEM shifter knob off....:stirthepot:

Probably not.... :rofl2:

Am i the only one who did this correctly? Wrap the freaking thing in e-tape until it's the size of an apple. Then wrap in gaffers tape until the size of a softball. Buy a freaking pipe wrench and just twist. No broken straps, no shredded knob, no vice grips. Just wrap it well and pull hard. This isn't rocket surgery.....

You bunch of weak asss sissies!!!!!!! I twisted mine right off with my bare hands.

After I wrapped it with a rag, tape and a pipe wrench.

You can do it that way....if you like taping things up for no reason....or just buy the Craftsman 2 pc 16'' Rubber Strap Wrench Set that I mentioned and twist it off. These bands are way too thick to snap, gives you enough leverage unless you got little girl arms...and your shift knob will be in pristine condition when you are done and you don't have to remove any tape either.....:icon17:

Before I did mine I was at the nissan dealer and asked the service rep how they remove them. He told me to wait a few minutes and came back with a photo copy of a page out of their service manual. It showed a drawing of how to use they use a strap wrench and a pair of channel locks to hold the shaft.

dremel solves everything

anyone ever try cutting of the stock knob? going up the side ,being watchful of the threads ? ?

I just removed mine back in February. The process took about 45 minutes. I have kept every stock part and was not going to cut the OEM knob.

I lightly warmed up the OEM knob with a heat gun then wrapped the knob with 2-3 layers of painters tape. The wife unit held the bottom (under the cover) with some locking pliers and I used an 8" Husky strap wrench on the knob itself.

The first 2-3 revolutions happened through brute force and multiple readjustments of the strap wrench. The rest were not nearly as difficult but it did take some effort. No damage to the knob but my hands were spent the remainder of the weekend.
