Shift Knob Removal -All you need
Okay we all know that the shift knob is a bitch to remove.
I purchased the following items to remove it today after some research. Some have used this for the knob and a wrench to hold the lower portion but this is all you need: Craftsman 2 pc 16'' Rubber Strap Wrench Set (link below where I purchased it) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 15 bucks and its Craftsman ...many other useful reasons to purchase too. Large one goes around the head of the knob Small one around the shift lever base ( lower area beneath the boot) to not allow it to turn. I even made a small mark on the shift lever base with some white paint to confirm that it was not turning. The bands are a thick rubber that does not damage the knob nor the shift lever base. Gives you plenty of leverage. Just wanted to share! |
I broke two of those strap wrenches when removing my stock knob.

I had two strap wrenches, unfortunately neither of them provided enough leverage. I ended up wrapping my shift knob with a bunch of painters tape and using a huge pipe wrench. It was still a b!tch to get off! One tiny little nick on the stock knob.

Mine came right off with a little muscle. Maybe some more gym time is warranted?:rofl2:

Really different for many of us. Mine was tight and that didn't work. Wrapped mine with good amount of duct tape, a towel, and large jaw vice grip.

I invited Chuck Norris over and he scared my shift knob off :ughdance:
Actually I used this with a breaker bar and some massive plyers on the shifter shaft... https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2824/...6eef14_m_d.jpg |
Wrapped a micro fibre cloth on it and then torques

Sawz-all :twocents:

My method.....
My method.....Two vice grips, elbow grease and a ton of cursing and it will come right off! 100% destroyed!

I just don't understand why there is so much thread locker on there... you'd think it would have been revised after the first couple of years since dealerships probably had to end up replacing a zillion of them while doing warranty CSC jobs. I guess it's not all that surprising since the CSC hasn't been revised either.

Mine came off with zero effort. Bought the car used with 6.5k on it. Either the PO had an aftermarket knob, or some part of transmission was replaced.
I feel like it's the latter since the shift knob is in pristine condition with no signs of a fight |
Hmmmm... I have a short shifter, new shift handle and new boot... do I really need to take the OEM shifter knob off....:stirthepot:
Probably not.... :rofl2: |
Am i the only one who did this correctly? Wrap the freaking thing in e-tape until it's the size of an apple. Then wrap in gaffers tape until the size of a softball. Buy a freaking pipe wrench and just twist. No broken straps, no shredded knob, no vice grips. Just wrap it well and pull hard. This isn't rocket surgery.....

You bunch of weak asss sissies!!!!!!! I twisted mine right off with my bare hands.
After I wrapped it with a rag, tape and a pipe wrench. |

Before I did mine I was at the nissan dealer and asked the service rep how they remove them. He told me to wait a few minutes and came back with a photo copy of a page out of their service manual. It showed a drawing of how to use they use a strap wrench and a pair of channel locks to hold the shaft.

dremel solves everything
anyone ever try cutting of the stock knob? going up the side ,being watchful of the threads ? ?

I just removed mine back in February. The process took about 45 minutes. I have kept every stock part and was not going to cut the OEM knob.
I lightly warmed up the OEM knob with a heat gun then wrapped the knob with 2-3 layers of painters tape. The wife unit held the bottom (under the cover) with some locking pliers and I used an 8" Husky strap wrench on the knob itself. The first 2-3 revolutions happened through brute force and multiple readjustments of the strap wrench. The rest were not nearly as difficult but it did take some effort. No damage to the knob but my hands were spent the remainder of the weekend. http://www.the370z.com/members/thebu...0-img-6726.jpg |
