I will rarely let the Z go below 1/4 tank. During the Spring & Summer if I use the car everyday I will fill up every Sunday.

I posed the question because I was just curious as to how much I should sweat when the guage starts to get real low. Some cars are more forgiving than others in this situation and I hadn't yet heard where the 370 fit in. Thanks to the members who have been brave enough to admit that they ran out of gas... especially in this forum. :stirthepot: |

i ran out of gas after a few races at the strip. Was finished racing, headed home and was heading to a station when the car died....luckly i coasted right into the gas station...was like 20ft away when it died. It will show 1 dot when you run out.

I believe that Edmunds.com had an editor that tested this (must have been atleast 6 months ago). Concluded that the gauge was off....

I went a whole tank with normal driving, no redlining or anything. To see how many miles the tank could go. I went to Zero lights and filled up with 18.2 gallons. I think the tank holds 18.5 ? so pretty much empty.

I ran out of gas... on the test drive.
I wanted to spend under $30k, so first the wife and I drove a base model. It was SR, which wasn't my first choice but between that and black the red won (I've had a black car before, won't go there again). It was low on gas so they gave me $5 and asked me to put a couple gallons in. I had fun on the drive and liked it of course, liked it a lot. :) When I got back I checked out the other Z's they had. They had a Nismo in BS, but that was way out of my budget, so then I looked at the touring model in PG. Liked the color, liked the extra features, so I decided to spend the extra cash and get the touring. I figured I should drive it just to make sure, and I noticed the gas was even lower on this one. They gave me another $5, but I only made it half way to the gas station before it ran out. I called the dealer and they said someone will be right there, it took at least 20 minutes before the pimple-faced lot boy showed up with some gas. I spent the 20 minutes checking out the car inside and out, so it didn't bother me much - my wife OTOH was not amused. :shakes head: IIRC there was one dot when we ran out. Since then I've gone all the way down to no dots without running out - strange. |

I fill up when I hit a qtr left. 3 decades of driving and never ran out of gas.
Never go low: 1. If you ever get stuck in traffic, u r dead. 2. Ever get called on an emergency and find out you are low on gas? Every minute counts and you don't want to to be looking at a gas station. 3. Ever lost in a bad neighborhood? 4. Ever with your love ones in the middle of the night and you are in between cities? 5. Anyone remember the California Northridge earthquake? All gas stations were down! You can have all the $ in the world but no gas to buy. I am sure other states have had calamities where $ is worthless. |
My friend there is always gas around when you need it, might just be in the parking spot next to you. Thats why you need to carry a hose with you. Ive gone down to the message center thing telling me 18 miles to empty

Something just occurred to me. Our fuel pumps are in the tank, right? I remember reading somewhere that the fuel pumps in the tank get hot in a dry tank without any fuel to dissipate the heat, shortening the life of the pump. Any thoughts on this? I may need to change my habit of waiting until the low-fuel light comes on.
