another useless oil thread

Ok, before anyone starts saying "do research and look for yourself" type of stuff i have looked several places, and dont see many people driving their z as much as i do, heres my details: i have an 09 370z that i got bout 2 months ago and getting ready to do the first oil change on it. I drive my z roughly 65-70+ miles daily 5 days a week, and i drive it had on the weekends. What would be the best oil/filter combo for longevity and performance(such as hard driving)? Ive seen different oil filters can cause different oil pressure levels(i could be wrong plz correct me if i am)?

Im leaning towads mobil1 full syn for oil, but for my driving style what would be the best filter? Any input is appreciated thanks

old guy 01-15-2017 07:46 AM

Mobil 1 oil & filter every 3/4000 mi.

SouthArk370Z 01-15-2017 07:47 AM

Nothing special about the way you drive (unless "i drive it had on the weekends" means racing), so any decent oil/filter will work fine as long as you change them at proper intervals.

Awesome thanks guys, like i said i had looked around for answers but didnt really see anyone that drove as much as i do so wanted to make sure i dont ruin my motor with a filter thats gonna change pressure when driving hard or normal(if that makes any sense lol)

SouthArk370Z 01-15-2017 07:55 AM

Just make sure you get a full-syn oil and a decent filter. Since you are doing some weekend racing, you should change you oil/filter a little more often than what the OM calls for.

There is no "best" combination of oil/filter nowadays. Any decent brand(s) will do a good job. The Mobil 1 combo that old guy mentioned above works great. YMMV

I just changed from Mobile 1 to Red Line. The engine seems to run a little quieter and smoother. I've always used a K&N filter. I also recommend following the recommended life of the oil between changes. If you dont track the car, you will be wasting your money changing synthetic at 3,000 mile intervals. There are enough studies and info out there that prove this. Just be sure to purchase a filter that also has the same lifespan.

N/370Z 01-15-2017 09:07 AM

Honestly im not going to be cheap doing my oil changes..ill use the best i can, i actually was just doing reseach on redline and was considering it, i got my car from the dealer about 2 months ago and put 5600 miles on it so far. I dont knownwhat the dealer used when they did the last oil change but i was originally going to use mobil1 full syn and k&n filter, butnif resline is better, and available at my local parts store than i may go with that

I just drive my car alot more than i see other doing people with theirs so i just want to make sure i get the correct oil/filter for my driving style

I agree about two things so far.

One is SouthArk's comment about your mileage and drive. Nothing different about it.

2nd and more importantly is your thread title. Definitely another useless oil thread.

I will contribute something though and to add to SouthArk's point. If you are not racing, many of the branded oils mentioned in this forum will do the job. I would even say no need to put top dollar on oil.

Thanks in advance for allowing me to be a smart a$$. Pls carry on.

op, I commute 74 miles a day on weekdays to work in my 09 Z; I don't race on the weekends. I haven't had any oil issues thus far and run a PL14610 filter and 0w-40 mobil 1 full synthetic; the engine warms up smoother and faster than with 5w-30, while oil temps remain below 220 unless with spirited driving in the summer. However, I took a 1.5mpg hit when changing to 0w-40. I change oil and filter every 6-7k. Hope that helps.

I got mobil1 extended performance 5w-30(garuntees 15k mileage protection) and k&n filter p# hp-1008, i think its the shorter one but i see alot of ppl using the 1010? I plan on changing filter and oil every 7k miles

The longer on(1010) you may have problems fitting the 1008 will function and fit great, I also drive hard in a closed are every other week or so and run redline 5-30 W/ K&N 1008

If you will be replacing oil early then you can save a dollar or two and use a smaller 1008

by using a 1010 you will reduce your oil pressure by a fractional amount by increasing the volume it can hold, however this amount is insignificant

N/370Z 01-15-2017 01:22 PM

I couldnt find redline at my parts store so i got the mobil1 ext protection, still full syn

tried both Mobil-1 and Motul, I do prefer Motul, engine runs smoother.

filter wise, tried OEM, Mobil and K&N, I suggest OEM and Mobil.

jaedub 01-15-2017 02:19 PM

I try to use extra virgin olive oil. Sometimes I use canola oil if I'm on budget.

jaedub 01-15-2017 02:21 PM

On a more serious note, I'd go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance (the gold bottle). I usually change the oil every 5k miles. If I drive a bit harder than usual, I'd get it changed around 4k. It really depends on how hard you drive.

jchammond 01-15-2017 02:23 PM

Most important thing is to change it & check it on a regular basis.
Mine see's 7500r's every time i'm out in it & only use e-free93 fuel.
Mobil 1 5w30syn & Napa 47356 (Premium synthetic filter by Wix) is what i use...it's the long Nissan filter used on the GTR's,Trucks,etc...
Walmart has best prices on oil & past 2 changes have been with the Extended Performance version (Gold label) suppose to be better during cold start-up's.
My interval's are 2500mi./short for some people, but i drive the piss out of it.
76,540mi. on it; avg. about 1500mi.per month.
roughly $40 per oil & filter change.

K&n and mobil1 are essentially made by the same company i believe..both are very similar to one another just the k&n is a bit more expensive i think, but ill try the mobil1 filter on my next oil change..im just 100% staying away from fram

After i flushed my A/7 trans@50k miles & seen how dirty it was,....i perform a drain & fill every other oil change to keep it clean (5,000mi about 4.5qts).
Valvoline Max-Life Multi Vehicle is the equivalent to the Nissan fluid & under $20 per gallon.

I'm pretty sure the Mobile 1 oil filter is made by Fram.

It could be, i could be wrong and have misread it..ill do some more research, just gornthe oil change done so im going tondrive it easy to first 100 miles and see how everything is..the dealership used a stp brand of oil filter so i dont know what kind of oil they used before i got it, they even had reg unleaded gas in it..not premium lol

I'm not sure which makes which, but go by the feel, I have the best experience with Mobil and OEM filter.

One of my mechanics, whose a specialist on GTR, told me the OEM filter is actually very good, and he makes me try again and I can tell he's right.

I do change oil every 6000km

jchammond 01-15-2017 03:29 PM

I'm not gonna bash another guy's oil, filter or interval....it's what ever is working for them.
Currently: eng.(Mobil 1) trans.(Valvoline) diff.(Motul)
Get on YouTube & look up some oil & filter video's...lot's of variation's & lot's of similarity's also!

I don't know what your dealership uses, but the two I have dealt with both used Mobile 1. Although a great oil, the manufacturer recommends ester oil. Redline is ester, and like I said, I noticed an immediate difference. I can't get Redline by me, but I order it from Amazon. It's worth the trouble of ordering it. You may also want to consider changing your transmission and rear dif fluid. The factory fluid isn't great. A quality fluid in both can make a noticeable difference. I also use redline in both. Is your Z a manual or automatic?

I asked the same question to the service advisor in the dealer about ester oil, he told me they put ester oil on the new engine, and then mobil-1 from the 1st oil change.

harman.khinda 01-15-2017 04:32 PM

I didnt read this entire thread.
AK370 has a good oil change tutorial.

I use a M-110 oil filter (bigger capacity), external magnet on the oil filter and magnetic drain plug and the best penzoil synthetic available. I drive it hard and ~110,000 miles later the engine is fine.

From what ive read in bob is the oil guy mobil 1 had a lot of iron in the oil and red line had unusual wear too.

Finally, some one that's understands "syn" oil, its from group 5 esters, everything else is group 3 or 4..
From what I know the only true full syns oils are Redline, Purple and Amsoil..

What brand filter is an M-110? Quite awhile ago I read a few posts on here that refer to a larger filter. I believe it was a Purolator, but I didn't note the model number.

I second the magnetic oil plug. I personally went with a Greddy. If you decide to do this, make sure you buy a quality plug. Some of the cheaper ones just glue the magnet on to the plug. I have read the glue can break down and the magnet can fall off invto the oil pan. That's definitely not a good thing.

My z is an auto, and im not sure what dealership used either, this was my first oil change since ive had the car. I tried looking for redline but unfortunately the parts store i usually go to didnt have it, so i opted for mobil1 oil and a k&n filter for now, ill try redline next time because i do like to drive my car hard and ive seen good reviews on redline all around

As far as the tranny fluid i was told i shouldnt have to change it, that the trans is build to last the life span of the car(?) not sure what the guy meant but ive only had the car for 5600 miles now(about 3 months)

Not sure who told you that, but I would advise against that, especially if you drive it hard or track that car. MT6 owners (myself included) have had issues with their transmissions. Changing the fluid has made a big difference.

This is a great thread about the trans fluid:
