Got rear ended for the 3rd time

I was on my way to work on a stop-and-go traffic on the 405 freeway when this lady rear ended me out of no where. She was obviously on her phone and not paying attention. I think she hit me going about 15 mph. I've already filed a claim through our insurance. Paint came off and there are some imprints on my bumper. As for her, her license plate broke off with some nicks here and there.

Yeah man, this is my 4th fender bender by the other party. I might just go with the Nismo rear bumper. I wonder if I can get this done through the insurance.

Find a shop who wont mind ordering the Nismo bumper. Insurance will cover it, you will just have to pay any price differences out of pocket.

RDAVIS247 12-13-2016 04:35 PM

Never hurts for that Nismo bumper. When I had to get my Evo fixed back in the day, my deductible was paid by me ordering a new wheel and carbon fiber hood. So things definitely can be flexible.

Second I saw LA in OP's profile, I figured.

Yeah if insurance lets you have it, dat Nismo bumper. Though it's gonna suck if another moron hits it.

I've rambled about how a lot of people shouldn't be driving for safety and ethical reasons, but another point to make is it's pretty...disrespectful for such people to just go about not giving a mind to everyone else's major investments. It's like stepping on someone's shoes....but exponentially more worth involved.

Totally agree David. Happened to me twice here in SoCal. First one was 2 months after purchase the other was around this time last year.

Jay - glad you're ok though. Just a thought if you want it replaced vs repaired. Based on how it looks you might have to find a good shop who'd fight for you and get a replacement. An adjuster from the offending driver's insurance company will fight a replacement. It does not look beat enough for them to sign off on that.

JARblue 12-14-2016 08:34 AM

3rd time? That sucks :shakes head:

You can only do so much about the idiot behind you, but FWIW here are a few options:
 • Give yourself significantly more braking distance - I know this can be tough to do in urban traffic
 • Add flashing brake light (The Home Of Flashing Brake Lights)
 • A ridiculous rear bumper guard (Rear Bumper Protector | Rear Bumper Guard) - for parking really, not driving
 • Racing brake pads that squeal like crazy under anything other than threshold braking when hot
 • Downshifting early with loud exhaust

ayrton88 12-14-2016 09:54 AM

My girlfriend recently go rear ended in her Miata. The woman that hit her claimed the Miata was so small she didn't see it. Another clueless SUV driver. I swear they are the worst. Replaced the minivan drivers as the most dangerous on the road.

You know.....I genuinely thought about that. But all 3 rear end collisions occurred when I was at a FULL STOP!!!! It's not like I braked hard causing the ABS to go off. I came to every stop at a very slow and calm manner, minding my own business annndddd BOOM!! I had 3 rear end incidents and 1 car backing out on to my door. Total of 4 incidents, at other party's fault, were all by women. Now, whenever a women with her car approaches my car, I get really paranoid. Do you guys blame me?

jaedub 12-14-2016 01:16 PM

And thanks for all the kind words. You guys are amazing

Thank you Raf,

I'll keep that in mind. I'll try my best to have them replace it instead of fixing it (hopefully a box of dozen donuts will do the trick). And how come I don't see your beautiful car anymore at the parking spot in front of Chase? I go to that mall often and I haven't seen your Z for awhile now.

Maybe an insulting bumper sticker would get their attention? Something like:

Yep, even good drivers have bad luck.

Years back at a stop light in my G35C, dead stopped for approx. 15 seconds, rear ended by a tourist in a Mustang. A few years later, filling gas at a station once, a minivan bangs the rear bumper of my GTI! Cell phones and in attentive drivers :shakes head:

My worst fear...Atlanta drivers are even worse!

enkei2k 12-14-2016 07:28 PM

something small like that, I'd just have the guilty party give me 500 bucks cash (or however much you want) and move on with life...since you filed insurance, it'll take a while for payout, all of OUR insurance rates will go up, and you're going to have an accident on your carfax (car value go bye bye)

It'll show up on a carfax for something this small?

Yup. Rooftop parking brother! There's a ramp on the side of the building that takes you to the top. I have a spot against the wall all for myself. It's a haven for crappy parkers down there.

Btw, I really hope you get what you want done. Really depends on how hard your shop grinds it out with the adjuster and how much of a prick the adjuster will be.

Zbrah 12-15-2016 12:22 AM

I've got a rear bumper with spats and fujimura bumper...just needs a repaint to black ;)

PaulZ370 12-15-2016 02:35 AM

Two fifty cals with about a 500 rounds each, rear mounted under the rotating rear lights a la James Bond with rear sensors and an algorithm that detects faster than normal approaching dorks and automatically open fire in barrage form disintegrating said offender before he touches the rear my Z...

The Ultimate 370Z Mod... :yum::driving::tup:

any accident that you file a claim for with insurance and get a police report gets added to your carfax report. it'll take a while to show up on there though so you might not see it right away

dbw 12-16-2016 08:10 AM

Here in Manitoba, Canada rear ending is a sport. I haven't had new car in 20 years that hasn't been hit by somebody not paying attention to what they are doing. Also, here in Manitoba the police will not come to most accidents (nor are they required to by the province) so the settlement process can end up a he says/she says situation.
My Z has been hit twice in 5 years.

axmea? 12-16-2016 09:04 AM

Need multiple cams for extra protection.

BehindSpace 12-17-2016 01:50 AM

dont idel in neutral or 1st gear without your foot on the brake pedal, people arent used to seeing a car without lites, they think its moving when the lites arent on, use your brake pedal when you are stopped and you wont get hit anymore

Agreed - have been doing this 99% of the time, and the 1% that it slips my mind, I find the guy (more often girl) behind me jerk forward as if I actually moved... very disturbing. However, even with the foot on the brake, it is still not a sure thing - just lessens the probability by a good bit...

So I decided to go with the Nismo rear. I ordered the bumper from my local Nissan dealer for $450 and arranged a shop to paint the bumper for $200. I did a fitment testing and everything was spot on except the inner fender.

As you can see, there is a small inner fender gap with the Nismo bumper but it's no big deal. I will probably fill that gap with some black plastic piece.

axmea? 01-15-2017 02:51 AM

Nice choice. Where are you taking it for paint?

Zbrah 01-15-2017 05:14 AM

Ya, $200 is cheap to paint a bumper! Just make sure they do quality work and you're completely satisfied. Nice looking bumper though.
