How long will you own your Z ?
When you bought your Z, did you plan on how long you'll own it for ?
For me it will be 7/10 yrs. 10 yrs. x 5,000 mi = 50,000 mi. Non modded, senior owned / all original / winter stored = top $ That's my plan. Do you guys ( or gals ) even think along these lines, or am I just crazy? |
I've owned mine for 4 years now and I'm starting to look for a replacement. Nothing excites me that I can afford so for now I'm happy sticking with the Z. Only have 37k on it so no hurry to get rid of it. I'm an old guy too and happy to report that I can still handle a manual without arthritis bothering too much. I hope the day never comes when I need an auto.
|
Target was and still is 250k miles. Same as when I bought my 96 Tacoma which is now at 265k. It had 249k when I bought my Z. Z is around 65k now so, 1/4 of the way.
|
I've had mine for 2 years and sadly have only driven it about 2200 miles, 13,xxx total miles. I had planned on keeping it for a long time (10+/- years) but things change. The new owner is coming to pick it up next week, to make room for it's replacement.
What I've done so far; Exhaust, test pipes, intakes, springs, wheel spacers, tint, OMP pedals. Parts piled in my basement; Motordyne M370 intake mani, NST UDP's, CF duckbill, CF rear diffuser, CF fang cover, CF stereo bezel, CF hood struts, CF shift knob, short shifter, complete sound system. I'm sure there's a few parts in the pile I've forgotten about. ...45 year old kid. |

Z or no Z life is still good  |
I'd would love to keep mine for ever (5.5 yrs so far) but all the electronics eventually go bad and as some point it's just not practical to keep it running. So I guess you can say I am hoping for ever but planning for the worst.
|
Bought mine with the intent to keep it forever...only has 25000 miles on it now, but I am always looking for a replacement. Not that the Z isn't a great, unique car, I just get bored with the same-old, same-old. But for now, it will be my "fun" car until further notice...
|
When I bought mine at 27k miles (at 34k now) I intended to keep it for ~10 years. Unfortunately, I had a lack of foresight when I bought it and am going to have to sell it in exchange for a house. :( However, if it wasn't out of necessity I wouldn't have sold it. Probably would've kept it until it died, so many many years.
|
I've had mine for 4 years, it's paid off and retired it as my DD with 70k miles, now it's my weekend and AutoX toy. I still have lots of mods planned for it and I never intend to sell it as its my first sports car in what I hope to be a long line of sports cars in my future :)

I only or usually keep cars for a few years or until something else catches my eye. Like a lot of us I am waiting for the new Z to come out, but in saying that, this time next year I will be looking at the new Corvette Grand Sports seeing how much the price has came down.

Bought her new and do not have any plans to get rid of her :driving: Also, I never consider resale value on a vehicle. A car is not an asset. I assume 100% loss and any return I consider a bonus. |
Bought it in 2011 with 7k miles. So it's been a little over 5 years, currently at 35,000 miles. At this point, between the mods and the depreciation over time, it's definitely worth more to me to have a car I enjoy driving and trust for reliability than the money I could possibly get selling it.
Likely keeping it until I'm unable to drive it as a permanent part of my garage. It'd share space with any future sports cars, like if I were to get a Grand Sport in a few years. For new cars, nothing right now under $80k would be enough of a change to justify buying. |
Bought mine in Dec 2013 with 78K miles, sold July 2016 with 109K miles. About 12k miles per year. Had headers, tp, exhaust, coils, wheels, spacers, crank pully, full audio upgrade
The plan was to keep it until I got a good enough job/promotions to get a better car. And that's exactly what I did. Got a 2014 Cayman S 2 months ago at 25 y/o :) Already have springs and upgraded brakes waiting in my house to go on. Car mods are a $$$ addiction. |
Very very long time.
Mod goal is "poor man's" 996 GT3. |
When I get a new car, it is always with the intention to keep it until it is no longer financially feasible to keep.
Somewhere along time I get it paid for, I always start to get an itch for a new one. So, I guess about 5 years? Kirk B. |
Another old guy here. Bought it new 2.5 years ago. I plan to keep it as long as I am able to climb into it, which I hope will be as long as I'm able to drive. (I'm beginning to notice that other cars aren't much easier for me to get into than the Z.)
I'm afraid the biggest monkey-wrench in my plan is the obvious inability of other drivers to see a freaking red sports car. It is incredible how many cars have pulled out right in front of me in the past two years. |
Driving mine till the wheels fall off... with everything I've done to it, it is like a totally new car that feels amazing to toss around. I got solid subframe bushing to install, then clutch+flywheel, new seats. After that a built v6 9K screamer of an engine replacement at some point. That's my plan, so I'm gonna own the car for... a long while.
The interior is simple and functional, the quality is great and there's nothing else I see that is like it, even in just being simple and minimalistic if you will; too much tech for me with the new cars. I also think that why there's so many examples of people taking older cars and rebuilding them top to bottom and keeping them simple and just straight up fun, since that's what it is all about... |
I bought mine new in November, 2010. Had no idea how long I would keep it. I am getting older ( will be 70 this December ) and thinking about settling down. Their are a couple of cars I would like to buy, but I am undecided at this time. I would like a car that has some get up and go but can be used as a year round DD here in Iowa. For now I plan on keeping my Z until one of the car companies make something that really appeals to me and fits my budget.

Never considered a car you drive an asset. Unless you have all the z models with under 1000 on the odometer and have them as a collection. Might be worth.
That said for me I got my car in 2014 as a used 2012. Had about 15500 km on it. I said I will keep the car until the engine pops or the floor rusts out. Currently sitting at 50000km |

I've only sold 1 vehicle in my life; my first motorcycle (2007 Harley-Davidson 1200 roadster). I ended up taking a $1500 hit after 5 years of riding it, so no real harm done. What I actually wanted/ended up with would have been unsuitable for a beginning rider anyway. |

I got my new Z in July as a retirement gift to myself. I retired about 5 years early. So I haven't thought all the way through the end game yet. All I know is I wanted a fast car and I don't need a back seat...

I always shoot for 3-4 years then I get bored.
|
As a business owner who can deduct/depreciate his car for taxes. 5 years is the sweet spot for taking advantage of that and re-sale value. So if there is no new Z by next year, I'll be driving something else. But 5 years from then, if the new Z is hot, I'll be back in one.
|
I was planning on driving it to the ground but things changed. I love my Z but my daily commute is bumper to bumper LA traffic....and I have MT. It takes me an hour just to get to work on a 20 mile stretch of highway. It's getting a bit ridiculous.
I've owned my Z for over 6 years and I never got bored of it. I'm planning on riding it out for at least 4 more years but I can't make any promises. Porsche Macan, 4 door infinits, and other V6 sport luxury sedans are getting my attention. I feel guilty thinking about it but I cant help it. I was a 20 year old college student at the time when I purchased my Z and it was perfect then. But I'm actually taking marriage into consideration with possible family in not too distant future. |
I bought mine and have the intention on keeping it forever. Of course, time will dictate if that ever happens.
Personally, owning the facelifted Nismo, I feel this car will age very nicely. At least that is my hope. In 25 years I want to be able to pull this thing out and have it be like a what a 240/260/280z is today (yes, I know some of those are older, but you get the point). At this point, I'm considering keeping the Nismo stock, save for some modest and easily replaceable pieces... Lowering springs, spacers and likely that's it. And then I want to do a resto-mod 240z, and make it simply badass. A fully restored and purpose built hoon-mobile. I'm more of a handling guy rather than a speed guy, so I likely will never get bored of the 370. I grew up honing my skills driving numerous FWD Hondas... Power was never big on my list... But throwing the car through a corner at, uh... spirited speeds never gets old. That, and it's not like car handling is drastically improving these days because, unfortunately, physics is a bitch. |
hopefully until retirement, so about 10 years total. I have a 2012. of course if it starts to break down a lot and getting too costly it'll be time for a change. but I'd like to keep her until we move down south and i'll get another sports car that won't be subjected to new England winters and road salt.

Nice to see some guys in my age bracket (70s) driving a Z. Bought mine new in 2010 and still fun to drive.
Test drove the new Shelby GT350. OK but prefer my Z. |
This is my plan for when I will get rid of my Nismo.
1. When I die. Then it goes to my daughter. She has a 350Z. Planning on getting planted in my Power Wagon. 2. When I go to a nursing home. I'll give it to my daughter so she can take me for rides in it on the weekends. 3. If I get into money problems in retirement. Then I'll sell it. 4. If I come across on a deal for a 2017 Viper ACR. :yum: |
I'm keeping my car as long as I can keep her alive. I drive her, put miles on and smile. When I get a new car, it will be an addition to the stable. I'll drive and own her till the block locks up or blow up. Then it she is rebuildable, she get rebuilt and I drive her more. As long as I can keep CV my matching Nismo VIN, I'll keep her.

My Z is my daily driver, but I'd also like to keep it forever; the two are at odds with each other.
At some point I'll end up buying a different daily, and the Z will become much more of a project car. |
I have a question for those wishing to keep the car till it becomes a classic. Will the vehicle be worth more if kept in stock form or would mods add more value to the car?
|
Purely a collectors item as close to original factory specs always brings more money.
For me, I'm like Rusty... she will be with until I run out of road to keep driving her on! Some people say to me; "that car has so much power I be afraid that I would kill myself." My reply is if I die at 160 mph you can bet there will be a **** eating grin on my face when they find me!!! :p :p :p Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk |
