shifting into P while driving..??

What would happen if I shift my Z's automatic into P or R while driving forward (especially when very fast) .. ??

Then you better order a new Gearbox...

Davey 08-10-2016 06:04 AM

Ordinarily I would suggest that you try it and find out, but in this case the resulting damage could cost you thousands of dollars.

Then again, I don't know, maybe today's automatic transmissions have protection mechanisms to prevent these kind of mishaps.

So, does the car still drive forward and reverse? Does it roll in Park? :)

Dirk McGurck 08-10-2016 06:19 AM

Even if you hit the selector by accident, it should get stuck in N rather than move to R or further.

It would probably make a very expensive noise. Why do you even need to ask?

Take one for the team and try it... Because science!

ZeeBabar 08-10-2016 06:35 AM

Felix, do try and let us know. Sacrificing one

ReLL954 08-10-2016 06:43 AM

It's what happens when you supercharge a crushed ice maker .... where the results are pricey and not icey

Who's uncomfortable? It's just that there doesn't need to be a thread for everything that pops into your mind. "What happens when I shift into reverse when I'm driving really fast?" Exactly what you think would happen. No need for a thread.

ChopsZ 08-10-2016 06:53 AM

Yeah, what was that I said in another thread about juvenile questions?... There seems to be a lot of that going around lately. This thread included.

brancky3 08-10-2016 07:14 AM

Didn't they test this on Mythbusters? The shifter would shift to P or R but the transmission would not engage past N.

SouthArk370Z 08-10-2016 07:16 AM

Since the 7AT won't change gears if it would lug or overrev the engine, I'd guess that it also will not go into R or P when you are moving forward. The FSM should have details.

If you really want to test it, get rolling at about 2-3 mph (just enough for the car to think it's moving) and slide the stick into R. If it will go into R, it shouldn't do much damage at that speed.

cooltoy 08-10-2016 08:57 AM

Use Google. Plenty of of answers on this. Not so many answers on this here.

Quote:

You can shift it into reverse while moving at highway speeds. The vehicle will act as if it is in neutral and will not actually shift into reverse. It MUST be an electronically controlled transmission (ECT) otherwise, you will cause MAJOR damage to the tranny. There are sensors that detect vehicle speed and there is a failsafe setup so that the tranny doesn't actually engage the reverse gear until a significantly lower speed.

Firebase99 08-10-2016 09:41 AM

I usually warm my headlight fluid by shifting into R from say 50 mph entering an on ramp. Not only does it assist the interface for the flux capacitor its a real hoot as well.

This is what happens when you tell children from an early age that "there's no such thing as a stupid question". There absolutely is a such thing as a stupid question, and people think less of you for asking them. :rofl2:

Instead of giving $$$ to Nissan for the Gearbox, why not donate to Charity.?

burntz 08-10-2016 06:58 PM

Someone must be on a business trip; Rental cars are used to the abuse...

Hahaha :icon18:you can only get it if you have read "that" thread.

felix0121 08-10-2016 08:40 PM

I just wanted to know whether the gearbox would be automatically protected or not in that above-mentioned situation.

Never mind, I already asked for the administrator to erase my this thread.

Download the OM and FSM and next time you have a question about how the car is supposed to operate see if the answer is in there. I haven't looked at the FSM in quite a while but I vaguely remember there being a section on how the TCM decided when to shift and how it would protect itself and the engine from things like over-reving, lugging, going into P or R when moving, &c.

abdulisraddd 08-10-2016 10:46 PM

I did a quick pull and my gf ( now my ex ) got so mad she put my car in reverse . I put it back in drive right away and it literally did nothing maybe our cars do have a protection mechanism. I was steaming ...not my car

Kick that bitch to the curb ... my wife may hate the way I drive but she damn sure knows better than to touch the gear lever while I'm in the driver seat.

Hey guys I have a question, probably should start a new thread because it's such an important question but.

What would happen if I drove off a small cliff (especially when very fast) .. ??

cooltoy 08-11-2016 08:35 AM

Your acceleration would increase to 9.8 m/s2.

Please stop.

I wanted to know whether the Z's transmission would be protected or not in that situation.

Anyway it is my mistake that I didn't clarify it from the first. I'll be more careful next time. I did not know this thread would be so blamed like this.. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I already asked to administrator to erase this trouble thread. Now I cannot erase this by myself.

I hope everyone would have good time in this forum.

It's OK.

Become a premium member and you can lock your own threads.

mishuko 08-11-2016 10:32 AM

what if I had EVOO as the gear fluid when I did this... won't it have a different result? I mean that EVOO stuff is so legit in my engine.

Hey man, no worries. It's all in good fun. And educational :icon17: hopefully you have learned to research your topic before hitting that New Thread button

But I'm with Cooltoy. If you go Premium, you can lock your own threads before they get out of hand ;)

It's only $15 per year. And for $20, your membership includes a pair of forum decals that are good for a minimum of 50whp each :tiphat: :driving:
