On a more serious note, any and all autos should do nothing if you throw it into reverse or park when going forward at speed. This is basically due to the torque converter allowing slip until the wheel speed/engine speed get to a safe slow point to where the TC will grab again. Of course, this puts a lot of stress and wear on the TC, possibly burning up the TC and needing replace.

Basically the same thing as putting 600+ hp through the stock clutch rated for only 300 hp. It will simply slip and smoke until you come down on the revs and let it grab at a much more manageable speed/power output.

Newer computer controlled cars don't rely on the TC for such abuse as the computers are programmed to protect against such stupid acts of mankind.

Much easier to downshift into 2nd rather than 4th though...:driving:

in that case... "P" means Power Mode and "R" means "Race Mode"

try it at your own risk, though.... :icon17:

This girl I dated in college had a new dodge neon 2002, her parents graduation gift lol...

It had the most annoying over assisted power steering/no steering feeling, so I'd get car sick whenever she drove, and her driving was just too aggressive for what that POS was designed for. Every single trip led to an argument about the car and/or her driving style.

So after a few hours drive to crater lake, I had enough, and ended up driving as I was going to "show her how it's done,"

My first "lesson" for her was to show her it can actually take off fast if you shift manually, however, I neglected to think about the fact that the automatic gear shifter required far less effort than my pos 4 speed mazda I had at the time.

With beautiful crater lake in front of us on a medium straight away:

Slammed on the gas in 1st gear, redline, time to shift: BAM! Right into F'n PARK! at 35-40mph.... the transmission made this nice CLANK CLANK CLANKKKKKK sound, dash lights lit up, slowed to stop, car died, and she's going crazy screaming at me.

The car went on to last another 10 years, and just had to be thrown in neutral, then park, then neutral, then drive, and it started right up just fine.

She drove the rest of the way, and never let me drive that POS again. :ugh2:

Evidently it had some kind of lockout that never fully engaged park, but it didn't sound pretty.

i saw some lady at my kid's bus stop toss her AT in park while she was still moving cause her kids were late for the bus.

it did not sound good... lots of clicking until stopped. but shes been driving the same car the last 2-3yrs.

Any particular reason why this thread still exists?

kenchan 08-20-2016 11:41 AM

That may or may not be true, but I wouldn't give you two cents for an auto, no matter what it is or how it's implemented. Exactly what turned me away from the Alfa 4C which I "thought" I would get one day.

Hope you guys aren't referring to me as the "newbe". That's the last thing I am. New to the site, yes. New to cars and their inner-workings, not hardly.
