In car speedometer

Hey so weird question... anyone have any speedometers/app/program/tool that can track both MPH and KMH with certain accuracy?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm going on a road trip and just realized how the MPH lines are not scaled properly. ie the 60mph is aprox 90kmh (it should be a tad under the 100), plus my having slightly different sized tires, I just don't want to be caught with my pants around my ankles when I'm in the states. :bowrofl:

Use GPS.

cooltoy 04-15-2016 08:42 AM

A phone app maybe?

how accurate are they? reception in remote areas affect quality/ability to decipher?

lack of reception seems to be the biggest drawback.

When I've traveled to Canada for work before I've always used my GPS to give me my speed in km/h. On the drive from Windsor to Brantford I didn't have any issues. Also never had any issues with accuracy in remote areas. Only issue I've ever had with my gps is in big cities where skyscrapers, tunnels, etc. block the satellite signal.

I use a GPS app on my phone from time to time on my phone - (digihud) , only when going through wooded areas or canyons should the signal be compromised , they are considerably more accurate than the speedometer

A lot depends on the GPS unit. A good one can be very accurate, especially when averaged over a few minutes at highway speeds. If it were me, I'd run down the road at different speeds and compare to dash speedo, then just use the speedo, making corrections in my head.

GPS coverage is (usually) a lot better than cell phone.

mishuko 04-15-2016 12:09 PM

thanks for all the feed back.
leaning toward a GPS unit with a speed tracker.

or I might just write a note of x kmh = y mph by doing some testing now :roflpuke2:

Phone GPS should, honestly, be good enough. Your speed isn't fluctuating much at highway speed so you should have an accurate reading after a few seconds.

zmanelite 04-15-2016 12:30 PM

I use WAZE traffic app and enable GPS display
Works pretty good and Its pretty good at telling you were the Cops are and traffic

njobe89 04-15-2016 01:13 PM

in the states the speed limit is usually 70 on the interstates... go 120-130kmh and no one will bother you at all. on the highways you can do 110-120kmh and again shouldn't be bothered.

whenever i drive to canada i always forget it's in kmh and one trip i drove 100mph where it was 100kmh. i was wondering why everyone was driving so slow :rofl2:

cooltoy 04-15-2016 02:13 PM

My Passport 9500ix is pretty accurate. And I can switch between miles and kmh.

somms 04-15-2016 02:49 PM

Phone GPS and consumer GPS units use the same chips and radios; you're not going to see any difference between the two as long as the phone's processor isn't too slow to run the OS (ex iOS 9 on a iPhone 4); you could get app freeze and the display could fail to update.

I use Waze as well for traffic and smokey reports. Its speedometer is plenty accurate and suitable for staying legal. Network coverage doesn't matter, the speedometer is calculated using GPS alone.

if you got caught with our new 'stunt driving law' you would be in the pooper for 7 days... impounded, suspension, big fat fine and lots of other problems :(

I always joke with our signs that are 60 MAX. so that's 60 mph max?!?!? lol

yea I have ball park figures of what converted but my concern was variance which i'll have to work out.

GPS does not use any data. You can shut the data off completely and GPS apps will still work.
