Use Waze - it has a speedo on it.

My 9500ix also has GPS with a speedo - it matches Waze exactly.

Neither of them match my speedo on the car above 65ish.

But remember, if you're going through Virginia, radar detectors are illegal (if you have/use one). They have radar detector detectors and ****.

Even if it's off they'll still take it if they see it (so I hear).

******* fascists.

GPS does not use any data. You can shut the data off completely and GPS apps will still work.

If you want the real time traffic info (cop reports, slow downs, etc) it absolutely requires data.

cooltoy 04-15-2016 09:17 PM

if you read what I said really carefully, I said GPS. The functions you mentioned are non GPS functions. They telly on GOS, but no effect on its functionality. GPS will work just fine without them.

Hey so weird question... anyone have any speedometers/app/program/tool that can track both MPH and KMH with certain accuracy?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm going on a road trip and just realized how the MPH lines are not scaled properly. ie the 60mph is aprox 90kmh (it should be a tad under the 100), plus my having slightly different sized tires, I just don't want to be caught with my pants around my ankles when I'm in the states. :bowrofl:

Anyway,if you are going to another Country, try to keep below the Country's speed limits,do not speed, the drivers there usually will 'forgive' you, because your licence plate are different...

i thought most navs who actual speed in the screen? then set cruise.

im not sure about virgina, but most USA roads ive traveled, cops arent dat anal about ur speed unless u're going like 12 over on the hwy. be careful in small towns (pop less dan 5000), residential areas, school zones, construction zones. fines are huge for the latter 2.

somms 04-16-2016 04:01 PM

Virginia is very anal about speeds.

Lionheart 04-16-2016 04:48 PM

Use a bluetooth OBDII adapter and an app like Torque to read the speed directly from the ECU on your phone. No GPS involved.

I don't really know what their beef with traffic laws is all about but yes, there are better things they could be doing with their resources.

Still though, I make good use of cruise control when I have to drive in VA to make sure I'm always legal. They'll bust you for a mile over the limit, just because they can.

My touring z has no tech package. But generally construction and school zones I'll slownright down. Double fines here and cops are always there.

I'll keep that in mind.... that's part of the reason I want something as super accurate as possible for live speeds

Torque app off obd sounds best

As far as accuracy, the iPhone and most phones update at 1 Hz (so one time every second). You can get an external GPS module that connects via Bluetooth to provide a more frequent update rate. The one below updates at 5 Hz and will give you just about all the accuracy you need. It's also useful for timing at HPDE's and track days.
