Default Exporting my 370Z (emissions)

370Z owners,
I'm in the military - I'm transferring to Japan and I'm going to be shipping my US 370z. I've been stationed there before, and I don't mind a left-side drive car in a right-side drive country .

All the literature I can find says that emissions on cars shipped to Japan can be up to $5000...I don't mind paying that (I consider my Z worth it), but does anyone know specifics? I know that 370Zs are only built in Japan, so I'm wondering if that will make a difference with emissions.

Thanks for any concrete information on this!

Jason

I shipped my Z to Korea before but you might be covered under SOFA. Usually that would make you exempt from most of the requirements. I can't really imagine them giving you a lot of hassle since the car was assembled in Japan for export to the U.S.

A bigger issue maybe insurance. It was astronomical in Korea and I heard Japan is higher.

+1 on leaving it and picking something else up for fun. I spent 7 years in Tokyo and 1 in Okinawa. I went through a lot of cars there, as you can pick them up really cheap! Also, I bought a 95 e36m3 with really low miles, for about 10k. I imported it to the US (Hawaii) and ended up selling it for 17k! So go, find a US spec veh for cheap and bring it back!

Yeah - GT-R...got it. Doesn't really help.

Not buying a different car. I have plans for my 370Z once I get it there (possibly supercharger, exhaust, etc.)

It is covered by SOFA, except emissions.

Yes - I've driven in Japan before, to include left side drive cars there. Width is zero concern. I owned an S-15 there before, which was wider than my 370z.

Thanks for the responses.

i would have thought TMO would have told you exactly what needs to be done to it if it is eligible to ship.

$6K per year in U.S dollars until I bought a cheap Kia as a DD. Then it dropped to less than $600 for 6 months.

I knew a few people who took their cars with them to Japan, while I was there. IIRC, they didn't have to do anything to the emissions, as long as it passed the tests. US cars are pretty strict on emissions (as long as the car is 50 states compliant), so it shouldn't be a problem. The only thing they had to do, was have side turn signals installed on their fenders, since it is law in Japan to have them. Good thing the Zs already have them tho.

Default Success!

Just to book-end this thread from a LONG time ago, I was able to import my 370z Sport/Touring to Japan easily enough. I only required emissions and noise test and ZERO - yes ZERO modifications to get it street legal here.
