You know back home in UK, the driving test if conducted in an Auto will not allow you to drive a stick shift. However, if one passes their driving test in a stick shift ( which majority do ) then their license allows them to drive auto also..

Like in Tx, If you get your concealed carry license with a revolver. You can only carry a revolver. If you learn with semi-auto, you can carry both. Similar concept as semi-autos have more procedure and moving parts.

yah its sad that most people in japan cant drive MT these days either. they only hand out AT licenses and u have to get a special MT license if you want to be a real car guy.

but then most cant even heel and toe so it's like why bother getting a MT license at this point. :shakes head:

The only thing hard about heel-and-toe for me ever is when you don't need to (like if you are just braking lightly). When you are on the brakes with any sort of pressure, it's dead simple.

Driving around on the street mashing on the brakes at the last minute/heel-and-toe downshifting is not something I like to do... Often. :driving:

The gas pedal design for the Z makes it awkward for me. And I agree with Davey - heel-toe with light braking is more difficult than heavy braking.

But I still turn off SRM occasionally for some good practice :driving:

Before I bought my Z I test drove a mustang. They had no MT GT's on the lot so I made them order one to test drive. I remember asking the salesmen (20 yr old) if they sell very many MT's and he said, "no not many, only to the older guys because young people can't drive em." I'm 39 so I guess he was talkin about me when he said "old".

When I decided on the Z I had to have them find and deliver and MT as well. They are rare!

I almost settled on an auto so my wife could drive it once in a while, but I'm glad I got the MT. Cruising at highway speeds and dropping from 6th to 4th in sport mode is pure heaven!

jmayz- dat's funny cause back 6yrs when i bought my Z, i was sitting in the AT one in the showroom when my salesguy approached me. first thing he said was 'sorry we have no more automatic Z's in inventory right now.'

my response 'that's absolutely fine with me, can u show me ur MT inventory?'

he had like 12 outside just sitting there. :D

Are MT sports cars really that rare? Maybe I just hang out with to many friends that enjoy and know MT. I'm just sick of hearing from family who think I'm insane for wanting and loving MT since it's "so much more work to drive". Uhhh...just no....

for light braking i use the ball of my foot to brake and side of my foot to blip . it's really not heel and toe, more like ball and side of foot. :D

For hard braking i do the normal heel and toe.

anyone can do it with some practice. it's not like i was born this way either.

yah, unfortunately they are becoming very rare especially for cars with larger displacement.

i mean think of made in japan cars that have 6 cylinders... bascially u only got the 370Z now. lol

i thought cvt's were more fuel efficient than MT's?

as far as performance advantage, for the junk AT's they put in cheap cars that is probably true. cant be said for higher end cars if you look at the numbers.

MT is to excite driving pleasure, that's about all that it's good for these days and most people can careless about cars in general besides how they look and which emblems they wear.

I think it was Jalopnik, but someone stated an article saying AT cars were beating MT in terms of mpg. Same with CVT's.

It's a dying a breed. But I'll enjoy it while I can. I did test drive an auto and that 7 speed auto with paddle shifters is pretty cool, but I just couldn't resist the urge for another MT sports car.

yep, when i bought my Z i thought (and still think today) this will be the last sports car from japan that will have the correct tranny (MT).

one thing i hate to hear from people when they say about MT is "oh.. but you have to press the clutch.. so much work especially in traffic...."


I'm like.... "yea, and you have to press on the gas AND brake too, so much work for your right foot... why don't you call an ambulance...."

I do have to say that the tiny engagement window on the stock Z clutch was pretty annoying in stop and go traffic. Also, while I don't think the clutch in the Z is too heavy, the old school clutches were a lot more work so people are probably just going off of the "horror stories" of people with really heavy clutches. I know I drove an older pickup with a decently heavy clutch with a super long travel and long throws and it was definitely more work than all of the other modern car clutches I've driven!

Until cars can 100% drive themselves, I'll stay in charge thank you!

I'm glad I'm not the only one, usually hit it while parking or while going slow. Go to push in the clutch to downshift or start stopping, only to jam that darned brake pedal.

I do the same thing, I have to tuck my foot under and against the seat so I don't do that.

Are you sure? I always thought R was for RACE!
