Well for nissan you have a few choice's from torque app to full ecu programming using Osiris Up-Rev or ecutek software in order to do most programming.
All have their own differences and caps. As for reading data logs there are simple stand alone programs to do that, ive never used one though beside UpRev soft. I have never owned a vw, but am sure this is what your looking for.
