This has gotten a little off topic, but hopefully nobody minds...

I have a rattle somewhere near where my dash meets my windshield and I can't figure out what it is for the life of me. I thought it was the plastic fittings around the gauge cluster but that doesn't seem to be it. Anybody else have this and figured out what it is? It's driving me insane.

No. I haven't hurd that noise yet... Did anything fall from the dash into the back of the gauge cluster?

I know I was reading someone got a Mini Pen jammed in there and it was doind all sorts of stuff before he got it out.

When you press in the clutch the plates are compressed and then the noise is gone.
Example shut your car off in neutral with the clutch out. Noise will be heard.

Then press the clutch in and shut the car off... NO Noise....

All normal boys its just due to the twin plated clutch. :)

This is great information. THANK YOU!

They have awesome service manuals that you can look at for about 10 seconds and know basically how to do it without f'ing up your trim. Also there are utube vids how to take apart your doors. They helped me s lot and I did it all without breaking anything.

The Dynamat made my road noise on "very textured" California roads go from unbearable to merely annoying. Im going to do some research on which areas the Dynamat helps most and add sparingly.

If you tap around on your car and find areas that "ping" instead of going "thunk" you can probably Dynamat the critical spots without going overboard on weight.

I carpeted my hatch, and then took a box of 4 sheets and put the stuff up around my shock towers and up in the fenders in all the spots that "ping". It helped a lot. Attachment 53789

I'm sure you have already said this somewhere, but how many pounds of mat did you add?

Thanks Man, glad to help!

yup, normal noises. the 2nd gear shifting noise is probably the diff moving a little bit. it's meant to do that (that which does not bend, will break kinda thing). making sure to push the clutch all the way in for that shift may help. also, double check your brake master cylinder and slave cylinder fluid levels, if you are a little low on clutch fluid you may not be getting full pressure on the throw out bearing so the clutch would be slightly more engaged than it should be causing the transmission to "clunk" into gear, tho i would think if that were the problem it would be noticeable on most gears

I just got my 2011 Nismo and have the same noises. I believe it is chatter from the cltuch flywheel assembly which is normal for a race car like the Nismo.

Hey guys, sorry to revive this thread. I'm a new owner and was searching the forums and came across this thread basically describing what I have.

In neutral, clutch out, idling and I get a whining noise. Clutch in and it's gone. Let it out and it starts up again. Looks to be the input shaft bearing and you guys are saying this is normal? I have 17k miles. Other than the whine, the car shifts fine and no other odd noises.

I'm just curious because I've also read threads on other forums saying that the whine is the first sign of the input shaft bearing failure which can cause harm to the gears and could ultimately ruin the trans. Am I just over-reacting?

forza370z 03-04-2013 03:13 PM

Yea it's the throw-out bearing. I think it's normal. Almost every 370z 6MT has this noise and I haven't heard anyone reported any issue related to it. Mine is 09. Had this noise all the time and no problem so far.

HKYStormFront 03-04-2013 10:03 PM

yea my truck was the same way, i don't hear it anymore (133k miles) but that's what's got me worried lol

One to Two pennys in ech hole. Then walla,, no more rattle.
Worked every time....

chii370 05-31-2013 10:19 AM

from what i understand most of the noise isnt from the trany or clutch "the rattle" although its located there as far as sound goes. its because of the rest of the drive train. the lighter it is, the more noise it makes. this goes all the way from the fly wheel to to the rear coupling on the drive shaft. this also has a carbon fiber "partial" drive shaft. less rotational mass means its easier to torque around and change direction, so when you engage and disengage the clutch and try to get the car to move these parts shutter because they are lighter. trust me, swap to a lighter flywheel and the noise will be 10X worse. the Z isnt the only one that does that, next time your beside a vette, listen. them and many other cars do it too. its just easier to hear on our car because we dont have a big noisy V8 going RAWR RAWR RAWR all the time covering all the other sounds the car makes.

Chuck33079 05-31-2013 10:29 AM

It's the flywheel and clutch rattling.
