Berk HFCs on Factory Nismo Exhaust *RASP*

Hey all,

First bolt-on on my nismo is the Berk HFCs and wondering if anyone has put this on their nismos with the factory exhaust. Reason I'm asking is that I am experiencing quite a bit of rasp under hard acceleration/revving and wondering if others have experienced this. Berk said that this is expected, no break-in period ; is it something ill just have to get used to? What are your experiences?

Thanks,

i have rasp with the nismo factory exhaust and ERZ HFC's. the below is a video..it doesnt really capture the deepness of the exhaust thats awesome, but more so the rasp and decelleration hiss that i hate. from what ive posted elsewhere...

from 0-25 seconds, its a slow rev up until about 5-6k rpm. at 26 seconds or so im just jamming the throttle to the floor...the rattling (rasp) is very noticeable!

That is exactly how my car sounds!
My biggest pet peeve is to sound like a tin can driving down the road.

The rasp does diminish as the car warms up but I still notice it.

Are you just living with it? What are your plans?

BennytheBlade 12-07-2010 05:36 PM

Ive got berk hfc w the nismo exhaust and g3 intakes and no rasp.
Don't know what it's like w/o the intakes.

QVu 12-07-2010 05:39 PM

Thats so strange, then how is my install of the hfc different? Arg!

from what everyone on the boards has told me...the rasp does diminish once they "break in". itll become less noticeable as the miles rack up. im at about 2-300 miles since ive installed them, and they are less raspy, but i still do get that annoying sound on hard acceleration. im hoping it goes away within the next thousand miles.

others on the boards have told me to give it a month or so before i come to any hard conclusion on removing them as they have said their rasp has nearly disappeared. we'll see as time goes.. otherwise it sounds soooo nice :icon14:

QVu 12-07-2010 06:00 PM

Yea ill give it some time as well before i make the decision to remove em. I definitely like the sound other than the rasp...Thanks for your input! Appreciate it!.

:tiphat:

wishihadnav 12-07-2010 06:02 PM

huh thats odd because i had no rasp aftr the Berks..hmm..

Rooskey 12-07-2010 10:09 PM

No rasp here either. (Berks with Nismo exhaust)

BennytheBlade 12-07-2010 10:39 PM

I was told that it may get louder as time goes one w/ the hfc, but so far, 3k miles or so, it still sounds the same... not loud, but deep.

fuct 12-08-2010 09:28 AM

i just listened to your clip. if your talking about that hissing during deceleration then thats not rasp.... poke a large hole in a hoonda exhaust and you have rasp. i have CNT test pipes and i have double that hiss.

during hard acceleration i hear more of what sounds like a sh1t load of air trying to rush out the restrictive nismo exhaust. no raspy, more air-y<< not a word i know.

QVu 12-08-2010 10:19 AM

I will be posting a video of what MY car sounds like. I don't mind the hiss on decell but its the metallic tinging/raspiness on hard accell that is buggin the absolute hell out of me. I do hear the air whoosh but it is accompanied by that tin can sound.

QVu 12-08-2010 10:26 AM

fuct 12-08-2010 01:05 PM

yeah def no tin can sound here. i would have ripped the TP's out if i heard that.

could it be your used to the deep rumble of a V8, and the mechanical sounding V6 is just dif to you?

QVu 12-08-2010 01:50 PM

I guess ill have to take the video from where the rasp is coming from, the cats. The stock cat didn't make this sounds at all. Its horribly annoying especially when the engine is still cold. From the cabin it sounds like im one of those ricers with pep boys fart cans lol.

wishihadnav 12-08-2010 01:50 PM

yeah it does hiss a little...no rasp however..

QVu 12-08-2010 02:45 PM

This is a better idea of the rasp im hearing:

yup, thats the exact same rasp that i get.

QVu 12-09-2010 11:05 AM

Has the rasp gotten any quieter since you got it?

Turfgod 12-09-2010 11:31 AM

Did you try resetting your ecu? To me at the end it sounded like a slight backfire during hard deacceleration. I did not hear it during accelaration only during deaccel.

Troy

QVu 12-09-2010 11:56 AM

yea im assuming the ecu got reset, the battery was disconnected throughout the installation process.

christian370z 12-09-2010 03:01 PM

Did you go to SpecialtyZ by chance? The last time I heard a Berk HFC/Nismo CBE combo, it sounded great and was still the traditional deep Nismo sound. I have to admit Berk HFCs and a stock cat-back exhaust is a bit raspy at times but it all depends on your preference.

There always could be a small leak somewhere, but other than that I am not sure what could cause that much rasp.

QVu 12-09-2010 05:11 PM

Yea I went to specialtyZ, I just dont know how it could be so raspy!

QVu 12-09-2010 05:34 PM

Not knockin on Specialtyz by any means of course. They are awesome.

christian370z 12-10-2010 12:03 AM

Yeah, Seb mentioned you weren't a fan of the additional rasp when I was in there on Wednesday. Apart from the rasp, does it sound good under load?

QVu 12-10-2010 12:46 AM

Hehe what a coincidence.

Yea i love the sound at all rpms, but i tune into the annoying rasp too much. just kills it for me.

i agree...even though its 50 degrees outside (COLD for us californian's) i roll down the windows pretty often and listen to the exhaust rumble. it sounds so great except for that range between 3k-ish where the rasp is. its pretty nasty sounding when you're doing a high RPM downshift too :shakes head:

QVu 12-10-2010 09:45 AM

Yea I do love it once the engine is warm. I went to Seb at SpecialtyZ again yesterday and he said this is normal, and the rasp really varies between cars even though their setups may seem the same. I truly hope it does get quieter over time. The time from now until I scrape enough money to go FI. hehe.

tjlazer 12-10-2010 10:48 AM

That is not bad at all and hardly should be of a concern. Sounds great IMHO. Make sure the O2 sensor bungs are tight, could be a small rattle.

QVu 12-10-2010 11:05 AM

Yea im sure ill get used to it. I love how its deeper now. i'll check the 02 sensor tonight. thanks for the comment!

Does is make that noise on decel too? I have an aftermarket exhaust and I get it too, but more noticeably when i let off the gas and coast.

I'm starting to think it may be eminating from the flex pipe (the walls might be really thin to allow it to bend). Does the OEM Nismo exhaust have flex joints up front too?

yes there are flex joints right basically right after the stock exhaust connects to the cat's. i have been under the car while it was on and there WAS a rattling noise coming from the flex joint area, but i fixed that (theres some heatshields a few inches down from the flex joints and i found some small pebbles in between the shields and the pipes).

im hoping to get under the car again today to see if i can bend any heatshields (as well as fix a CEL issue with some steel wool) which may be causing that rasp, but we shall see...going under the car while warm is pretty damn scary haha

I have been searching the forum for posts on this issue for a while. Addressing your issue first, the first video isn't that bad, but the second one would make me not want to drive the car at all. I am experiencing a rattle, not so much a raspy noise, and I've noticed it more on deaccel'. I believe I heard it a little on your first video.

Now on to my issue. I had the Berk HFC's, and the Injen cai's installed in Aug. I didn't notice the rattle immediately after the install, but it grew after I put a few miles on the parts. I figured it needed some break in time, and decided to take the car on a trip through a few states. :driving: Although I thouroughly enjoyed bonding with my new toy the noise had only grown worse by the end of the trip. If I was disgusted by the noise from the inside I can only imagine how it sounded to the group of onlookers who'd gather around my car outside of a hotel as I drove off. I'm sure it wasn't the symphonic orchestra. :shakes head: Anyways I have decided to remove the parts when I return, and go FI. If I have to deal with aggravating noises I'd rather have more power. :excited:

Hopefully you're able to solve your issues, and pass the word along to the others dealing with similar problems. Good luck.

QVu 12-14-2010 10:39 AM

Yea in speaking to Sebs from SpecialtyZ again, who did my install, he had said that the rattle/rasp was normal and its basically something ill have to live with. Its not that bad when the engine is warm, but it can be disgusting when cold as you heard in my second video. I am going to play around with the heat shields this weekend and see if there is rattling coming from there too. But, it looks like ill be living with this sound until i save enough for FI as well.

About the injen CAIs, did you experience any noticable gains with that part alone?

Mont 12-14-2010 11:43 AM

To be honest I was strapped for time, and a bit hasty. I had both parts installed on the same day, and didn't even bother getting a baseline. I arrived at the shop over an hour late for my appointment thanks to a late mail truck, and a two hour drive in traffic. After throwing in adequate cool down time I was lucky to get the job done at all. Good thing the mPM you the infoechanic was a big fan of the Nismo.

While perusing through the forum before purchasing my parts I think I noticed a post with the dyno numbers for my setup. I don't recall if they recorded numbers for each individual part, but if I come across it again I'll .

Don't know what it's like w/o the intakes.

have you ever had any problems with the nismo running hot since installing the gen3 intakes? are you satisfied with the perfomance of the intake? is it worth the money?

F1loco 01-19-2011 09:16 AM

Just don't waste your time deleting the rear can with test pipes or HFCs...your ears will bleed...I'm talking louder than most tracks will allow...took mine off and ended up with just stock CATs and rear muffler delete...which I had some more flow in the CATs for more burbles and pops on the overrun, but at least there is no rasp...

QVu 01-19-2011 11:35 AM

No Plans to remove the Nismo exhaust. The volume level with the Berks is satisfactory at this point.

Debating on getting an Intake while saving up for FI.

Urbanracer 01-19-2011 07:15 PM

I have the Berk HFC's and the stock nismo exhaust and pretty much have the same sound. I'm not really sure if its gotten any better, my car has been in storage since November.
