We used to pay our day laborers nearly that much, and they worked 8 hour days with OT (1.5x) pay on weekends. Skilled labor is paid far more.

This. The math says that someone is getting a great deal, and it's not the OP. If you break it down hourly, it's worse than a McJob. Also, if you don't technically work there since you're paid under the table, what happens with a worker's comp claim? It's construction, **** happens regularly.

:iagree: it sounds like that family member is taking advantage of the OP. And if OP is not on the payroll, insurance will not cover a worker's comp claim if something were to happen :eekdance:

Yeah, probably could have bought a nice used 911 for all the money I spent, but I still love it.

Agreed. I thought I went with the economical option. :rofl2:

This went from "poor man's GT4" to "wisdom for poor kid". Actual real and useful life lessons from a car forum where people discuss how to dump more money into a impractical car haha

A friends, I do photography as a hobby, and took some pics of his cars at the meet.

All this talk about just affording to buy the car, yet you haven't truly considered insurance costs? I know before I was 25, insurance for a NISMO 370Z was too high to the point of swaying me from considering the car.

I bought my Z last year when I was 26. Figured "what the hell," and started pinging USAA with insurance quotes. For the hell of it, I queried a NISMO 370Z and was quite surprised with how much the rates dropped. My wife as surprised as well, as she pretty much told me to buy one. I personally wouldn't be comfortable with ownership costs of a newer Porsche until my household income is at least 80-100k/yr.

Live within your means. Set goals, and work towards them.

I don't know what it is about modern Porsches but I hate them. Maybe it's because of the same basic shape they all have or no easy access to the engine compartment or the extreme high cost of maintenance or IMS bearing problems or the stigma of driving one. Just don't like em.

Ok, so my dream car is the Porsche Cayman GT4 with the carbon bucket seats and carbon ceramic brakes. I'd love to own one, but like most can't afford a 6 figure car. So my question is with the right mods could I make a Gen 1 Nismo close to a GT4?

yes this is possible

Having driven against a GT4 at the track, I was not impressed. I'll stick with my Nismo. Nice looking as they are. A GT4 is not in my fantasy garage. GT3 Yes, GT4 no.

My 2c: All of these guys speak the truth! We had the same dreams as you when we were your age but your life's decisions come first. Go back to school and get your education or if you have a career path working for family, wait until you get into a management position before you start looking at high-end cars. Not many 370z owners are in their early 20s since school and career come first.

BTW, I'm 59 and have owned many cars as toys, but that started in my mid 30s when career was solid and I had a reliable daily (a truck to haul parts lol)
