Help! Need advise! Terrible car buying experience

I am new to the forum -- I recently posted that I have been looking at a plat graphite touring+sports pkg. The car is on sale for 35K, but i think there is something wrong w/ the tranny, so I am going to pass the deal up.

However, I made an appt with another dealership tonight to test drive a 4oth anniv edition, which they are selling at invoice. After the drive, I offer them the same deal as I could get on the aforementioned car (35K), and they took it. I shook hands on the deal and all. Then, after sitting around for at least an hour while they were doing the paperwork, they come out and inform me that the GM found out the deal that they were giving me, and they couldn't sell the car to me at that price. Holy Shet! It blew my mind. Sooo unprofessional. The GM was actually out of the office today, but I told them to have him contact me asap tomorrow.

What do you guys think? I would think that once they accept an offer and shake they cannot back out. Even if they legally can, it is insane that they would sacrifice their professionalism and reputation. Thanks for letting me vent! Please respond :)

At all the dealerships that I have dealt with (Ford, Nissan, GM) the General Manager of Finance always is the person who actually has to approve the deal. It is completely apart and separate from what the floor sales folks do. And yes this situation can happen where the floor sales folks think they are within the GM's limits of financial play and they are actually off.

SO in terms of the "handshake" it only means something when the GM is the one shaking your hand. Everyone else doesn't count.

Go somewhere else.

The way a see it is know what you are willing to pay just be willing to walk away. There are plenty of Zs in the sea. And plenty of dealers. Get offers from more than one and shop around. Finally, don't let the dealer fool you they knew they would get you excited about the car then push you to pay more by changing the deal at the last minute.

:iagree: Pretty much gotta stay firm with your price, make sure they don't add in bs charges at the end on top of your agreed price and most of all be comfortable with the buying experience. If you feel like they are cheating you somehow, take your money and go somewhere else. Don't compromise your hard earned money just because they have a car you want, know that there are many others out there too. Be ready to walk if you have any doubts.

Thanks guys. I figured that they would not be under legal obligation. I am obviously not going to do business with them. But I am going to talk to the GM tomorrow just to share my frustration.

I wouldn't waste my time. I hate when dealers pull this crap.

When you talk to the GM. Remind him that a salesman from his dealership made a deal and you excepted those terms. If he dosn't want to honor the deal just take your money and leave. He might make the deal just to sell the car.

If the GM did make the deal just to sell the car, wouldn't it have been easier to just have let the deal go through the first time? Makes me wonder if any GM even disagreed or whether the sales guy thought he might be able to bait and switch at the last minute for more money.

Dealerships in the Bay Area just received their 40th Anniversary edition last month. I spoke with two contacts at separate dealerships and they both wanted at least full MSRP. However, after a couple of weeks, none of the dealership have sold their 40th Anniversary Edition. Most dealerships got only one unit from Nissan.

I just purchased a 2010 Nismo back in February. Due to the limited production, the dealership said the best they could do is $100 of MSRP, but after a few weeks later none of their Nismo were sold so I got it for $5,000 off MSRP.

You many think that Buyers are running into the dealerships to buy the special edition, but at the end of the car is still sitting on the dealer's lot. Hold tight they will break and you may get your deal. The economy is not like what is was a couple of years ago. The dealership know this, but they are hoping that you will buy with your emotions. Do not buy on impulse....

And you would lose.

To the OP...you really though you would get a limited edition 40th for $35K? That's crazy!
