I Need More Horses.....

Fellow 370 owners. I'm new to this forum and to Nissan. I've recently purchased an 09 370z. The car is defo a looker, however from day one I felt it didnt fulfill its potential. So I had an HKS SSM exhaust system fitted, HFC's Miltec Y pipe, HKS hybryd air filters and a remap.

I could really feel the difference but was amazed to note that whilst there was an increase of over 35BHP as a result of the mods, the max power registered on the map was just 315HP! As Nissan quote 331 I was more than a little dissapointed.

Is this normal? Should I focus more on the gains than the absolute power? Whats the best way to get to that magic figure of 350BHP?

Any ideas/suggestions? :tiphat:

Why do you need more power? 315whp is more than enough to have fun! Your next option is either SC or TT.

TerribleONE 04-26-2012 04:28 PM

315whp is about 350BHP... if you are itching for more power above that, spray or boost are about the only ways..

Mr C 04-26-2012 05:19 PM

Thanks for the reply and guidance, but 315whp equating to 350BHP? Im confused - although easily done. Only today I was told by a reputable tuning house that the 331 figure Nissan quote is bogus.

Whilst the car does feel good, I still need to wind it up to get the heart beating. Thats why I was looking at other tweakes (new headers?) before considering SCing or adding turbos.

NYBladeZ 04-26-2012 05:42 PM

You're statement about "winding it up" is correct. The Z is not a muscle car with large displacement, thus it does not have the low end grunt that you seemingly are looking for. The Z needs to be driven hard to get the move out of her, that's just how she is designed and built and OP take no offense, but you should have known that when getting into her. If I was you I'd go with long tube headers, they won't throw a check engine light if installed properly. If that is to hardcore for you, high flow cats or test pipes are the way to go. You are retaining the stock cats and they are very restrictive. It still won't give you the low end grunt but if you don't feel the power...well you aren't driving her correctly.

NY BladeZ: No offense taken my friend. Your point is well made and valid. However to be clear I have fitted high flow cats. I think I will explore the option of replacing the stock headers. Thanks for taking the time to guide a Z first-timer.

NYBladeZ 04-26-2012 06:16 PM

Hmmm, well your first post didn't say HFC's. Ok well now that you have that I don't think you'll really see benefits with headers. Maybe if you had gone long tube headers because typically one piece instead of a combo of headers and hfc's seems like work better. Short of going twin turbo or supercharger I say go with 4.08 gears. I didn't have them on my Z but the rep is that they really wake the car up on the low end. Vids have been posted of a bolt on Z with gears running a 12.xx quarter mile. That would be my next mod in your application.

TerribleONE: Sorry I wasnt clear in my initial response. I was told today that the 315HP measured on the rolling road dyno equated to about 256HP at the wheel. As I was led to beleive that the dyno measured flywheel power, and the hp measured at the wheel would be less as a result of losses in delivery mechanism. Hence my confusion at your statement 315whp is about 350BHP.

I still stand by my statement that the car feels much better. Its just that it didnt sit well with me that in reality my baby may only be pushing out just over 250 horses.

An average baseline dyno for the Z with no mods is around 270-285 hp. So you are somewhere around a 30 hp gain. If you just want to get to 350 hp at the wheels, I would suggest headers, a motordyne intake plenum, and some lightweight pulleys. That should get you there. If you want more then boost is the way to go, as previously stated. A decent TT setup can put you at 550whp on stock internals.

Thanks Huck!

to be clear, Nissans claims of 330 HP is at the crank, not the wheels.

Nismo? Thanks for the advice, but..... Nah. This baby is growing on me more each day. Just traveled 300 miles from the east coast of England to Wales. Had lots of fun. This car, with its mods, is a keeper.
