Anything to increase Fuel Efficiency? Are they worth it? Cooler Kits?

Recently bought a 2015 370z Sport Package, really excited!

I want to invest in modifications, but I am only interested in the ones that increase fuel efficiency.

Been doing some research and found some cool stuff! Cold air intakes, Stillen transmission cooler kit [my 370z is an automatic :-) my daily driver car], as well as other coolers kits.

Do these things increase fuel efficiency? Performance?

Thanks!

Sory to tell you but if you're looking for fuel efficiency, you bought the wrong car...

To increase efficiency, sell the pos Z and get a Prius, GO toyoda!

Yeah I can agree, but its a fair question :)

I still want performance and power dont get me wrong, I whip this baby around!

but since this is my daily car, during the work week, it wont hurt that the money im putting in is at least making the gas cost better you know lol

To realistically answer your question.. NO there isnt , best bet is to buy a daily and commute with that leaving the Z as a weekend toy

"Coolers" increase thermal load capacity in heavy-load condition such as track duty. Adding a transmission cooler for a car, nearly any recently-produced car, in a light duty condition even in a stop-and-go city traffic will not add "fuel efficiency". Same to be said with engine oil cooler. I also doubt that an open-element air cleaner would add "fuel efficiency"; several engine parameters need to be monitored and logged to determine a gain or loss.

I'd say save the money you're about to spend for mods and use it to pay for the fuel. If you insist on saving a few bucks, enroll in a few of the many fuel-reward programs out there. Welcome to the forum and enjoy the car.

I don't want to get flamed but i installed an Injen CAI on my Z and I went from 22 to 25 mph. Not sure if it would really be worth it if all you're looking for better mpg but I noticed it as I keep track everytime I pump gas miles vs gallons used not the computer display.... :driving:

Makes 0 sense.

To you and the OP, exhaust mods are the only mods that theoretically increase MPG

I mean a less restrictive intake mod over stock would probably increase MPG right?

No, your car would immediately add more fuel too

oh :owned:

A tune could add fuel efficiency, if you specifically tuned your car to improve your MPG.

Otherwise, a lighter exhaust could theoretically help (and any other mod to lighten your car), but that's about it.

Blighter 06-26-2015 11:27 AM

yeah, take out the carpet, dash, spare, scissor jack, all the plastic panels, replace the glass with plexi... you wil save a bunch of gas.

Zbrah 06-26-2015 11:58 AM

After I added an aftermarket xhaust and intake my mpg actually goes down, the sound it makes is intoxicating making it tougher to stay off the throttle! Lol

Many performance modifications increase efficiency, which means increased MPG ... IF one doesn't have fun with the extra HP. As long as you are increasing efficiency and not just cramming more air/fuel into the engine (eg, super-charger), performance mods can increase MPG. But few people are going to make mods and not have some fun with them.

Most modern engines are not going to see big increases in efficiency/MPG with simple mods. The auto engineers are already doing a great job in order to meet smog and mileage regulations.

Why buy a Z if you are worried about MPG?

Madvillainy 06-26-2015 10:52 PM

Honestly,

I am not entirely concerned about MPG, I bought my 2015 Black on Black 370z cuz its a bad car :) !!

Thing is, my buddy is trying to get me to install upgrades like cold air intakes as well as a new exhaust system.. Quite unnecessary, but why not? LOL

I like to value my spending, so I figure if I get em, might as well have some return. Its not like I will be taking my baby to the track frequently nor will I be street drag racing anyone. The car handles like a beauty and I go to work in style..!

(Car can be a little quieter. Found a DYI thread on decreasing cabin noise - might be the first realistic 'upgrade')

:icon18::icon18: why stop there?? take out the sub, radio, speakers, passenger seat, power options, AC system, replace 19" with 18" wheels

is this your car or your buddy's car? why are you letting others dictate on modding your car?

also, decreasing cabin noise would defeat the purpose of making your car lighter and would make your car heavier, thus you wouldn't be able to save on gas.

Madvillainy 06-29-2015 10:28 AM

You are not incorrect :)

burntz 07-18-2015 01:54 PM

1: The best thing for MPG is "adjusting the nut behind the wheel".
2: Prepare yourself for the most boring driving experience in the world, 'steady state'; once at speed your goal is to feel zero acceleration/deceleration unless you're going up / down hill. Cruise control will be a wildly exciting ride in comparison to trying to maintain momentum rather than a select set speed.

[before you all vote me off the forum I have burnt through 3 full gas tanks in a single day during track sessions, (75 laps around Sebring), in my 350z, my wife has a Prius and the driving 'excitement' there is a 'trying to reach 60mpg' video game]

3: accelerating from a stop, the 4 secs of fun, it's most efficient to briskly (75-80% throttle) accelerate, [but don't floor it the engine then goes into 'dump fuel in' mode] until you get to your goal i.e. Limit(L) +5, then just enough throttle to just begin the slowest coast to a stop you can manage, I let the speed wander from L+5 down L going up hills to 'L+5' +5 going down hills, the 350 was a MT so clutch in coasting was a plus, I've read shifting the AT to neutral to coast is a no-no for tranni longevity

4: look ahead, plan your stopping from 1/2 mile out to start your slow momentum loss, braking the final 5mph just as you reach the stop line, if multi cars are needing to get thru a stop sign in front of you coast and make a larger gap trying to time your actual stop at the sign just as the car directly in front of you is finally pulling away

i, luckily?, have an early commute so have little traffic to deal with (i.e. annoy), I'll zip past people to find an emptier bit of roadway to do this.
Between driving like Miss Daisy and track days that show you there is nothing you can do on the street near what is actually "track fast" I've kept my tickets down to where I can do the online traffic schools to clear them.

Also a scangauge will show average mpg and current mpg at the same time.
Have fun!
