Can't wait for next weekend myself, especially after checking out the "Winter is Coming" exhibit of artwork inspired by the books at Emerald City Comicon. Some of my pictures came out great but the gallery used some cheap (reflective) glass on some of the pieces.

I love the fan art. Especially the portrait of Dany in traditional Qartheen dress :yum:

Too bad they didn't have her wear that on the show.

Polliver's death was 10x sweeter than in the books. I am craving when Janos Slynt's head will be rolling.

Great start to the season. I pictured Oberyn Martell a bit different, but the overall character was spot on.

The popularity has without a doubtfully expanded exponentially, but the books were popular in their own right. GRRM has nothing to worry about. I wouldn't be surprised if all the main plot lines and characters already have definitive endings. The great thing about the GOT world is that there really isn't a beginning or ending. There are stories to be told before and after the Song of Ice and Fire.

Long way to go before we see Slynt's head roll.

I was genuinely terrified of Arya's face as she killed Polliver. Read the books, but wow. She's just a kid...

Vertigo 04-07-2014 11:51 AM

Oberyn and Styr, the Magnar of Thenn in S4:E1 were very well portrayed. Daario, ehh, maybe I'll warm up to the new actor. I prefer the Daario from S3 better so far, but it's early. Arya and the Hound = awesome scene to end the show.

I heard the show went away from the book on this, as the Hound dies in the Tavern and Arya leaves him bleeding out on the floor (in the book). But I am glad they are keeping him around, anyone who advertises F*** the King openly, I like em and want em around.

not quite. i think they were able to leave the inn in the books, and clegane bites the bullet later.

ElVee 04-10-2014 04:29 PM

These are book spoilers; not spoilers just for s4e1.

The Hound
( Click to show/hide )
The Hound was one of the better characters in the books he made his presence actually felt, and he even gets a character arc! Not bad for someone who doesn't appear as a main character. I was absolutely pissed when he was killed. But at least he got a sort of epilogue later. I'm super interested in what the show may do, since clearly he skirted the fatal wounds in the inn. And he's so perfectly cast, it would be hard to waste that. In the books, he wasn't quite the confrontational jerk, but rather drunk and hungry in the inn. This is sort of illustrating some of the shakiness in some of Martin's characters personalities when he wrote them...they don't always seem very thought-out, but more of a "I'm going to write this and see where it goes stream of thought."

Arya
( Click to show/hide )
I love the Arya from the books and from the show, but sadly they are different. Their kills are in different spots and with different motivations and reactions. It's really bizarre how she's been changed between the two. But I do like it; it adds some nuance to her.

re: hound
( Click to show/hide )
Since he died "off screen/stage" in the books, there's a fan theory that he isn't actually dead. IIRC the only way we know he is dead is from a conversation Brienne had with the priest/maester (can't recall exactly) who tended to him as he died and buried him. The priest/maester then left his hound helmet on top of the grave, and it was stolen. Then rumors of the "hound" (someone wearing the hound's helmet) raping/pillaging are brought to kings landing. Obviously, this is due to whoever stole the helmet. However, the theory is that the priest/maester was actually talking about the death of the "hound" personality in sandor, and he is really still alive and acting as his own man now. when we first meet the hound he is best known for being the younger brother to gregor/the mountain, and unquestioningly loyal to the crown (robert/joffrey). so the hope is he shows up again later as a changed man, thus completing his character arc from thug/enforcer to true knight (which is ironic since he hates knights). :tiphat:

I agree, it adds more depth to Arya's character, IMO. I don't think they could have picked a better actress to portray Arya. I can't wait to see her further development and the inevitable reconnection with Nymeria and her development of her warg "abilities"

Yup, but don't forget the other popular theory out there. I picked up on the strange large guy on the monastery island and am convinced that's him. :) But I do hope he's actively back someday.

The awesomeness continues...

As I state last week, HBO saved George R.R. Martin. A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons were decent IMO, but they also belied the fact that GRRM was a bit wandering where he wanted to go. The first three books and the TV series were equal, but it is apparent that the TV series is going to have a better, more concise story. Just look at HBO's track record: The Sopranos, Rome, Boardwalk Empire, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and The Wire (my god, The Wire is the best, most unseen TV show ever). This can only benefit The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. I am excited about both!

( Click to show/hide )
Bronn and Jaime as sparring partners...brilliant! Roose and Ramsey Bolton (Snow)...awesome! The death of Joffrey...spot on! I am kinda bummed that Penny and Pretty Pig aren't in the series.

First off great show, I have been waiting for something like this since Ned Stark was taken from the show, The King is Dead. I personally think it was the Fool Knight who did it. (Please no one tell me who did it, just throwing out my thoughts on the kings murderer, aka Hero) Show is going to get real as Joffery was married and Margaery Tyrell-Lannister so she is now the rightful ruler, so should be interesting in coming shows. SOOOO happy HBO said the show is locked, aka will be produced through Season 6.

I agree, only more emphatically. I've read plenty of fantasy series over the years, and it's not uncommon for an author to hit upon some success, and then milk the hell out of it. It's rare enough when success happens, and it's hard to fault an author for doing it. But it's still never a good taste in the mouth for the audience.

I felt AFOC and ADWD were awful. They slogged on about nothing just because he opted late to split it into two books and needed filler. I greatly dislike his change from having every chapter named and centered on a main character, and instead now brings in some ancillary characters, sometimes completely throw-away. And it also means I can go 20 chapters before getting back around to the ones I actually like. Including more characters can be nice, but man it bloats the content.

And it suffers from that same problem that other milked fantasy series experience: nothing happening. Sure some things happen, but it's a long slog to get there, and it's typically just end-of-book things...major milestones GRRM needed all that filler to get to. Busywork for major characters that really doesn't matter much.

And by the end of ADWD, we have supposedly just two books left, and I struggle to think of how this could all be wrapped up in two more books.

Yeah, they've really condensed down the idiocy GRMM insists on building in his books.

I mean, I'm all for added detail and building the story, but especially in FoC (haven't read DWD yet) it was awful 80% of the time.

I did not expect Bronn to be sparring with Jaime. Let's see what creative licenses HBO takes with this. Probably won't stray too far from source material, but it's hard to imagine that Jaime can get away with sparring with Bronn for so long versus the mute Ilyn Payne as he does in the books.
