HyperFest 13: Saturday June 15th

This is a reminder that HyperFest 13 is @ Summit Point Raceway on Saturday, June 15th. I will be driving in HPDE 3 but this is a great spectator event as well.

HyperFest

I have HyperFest to thank for finally taking the plunge and signing up for my first track day. I remember heading up there with the National G[35] Club ostensibly to watch the drift racing on the Shenandoah Circuit. However my eyes kept drifting over to the Main Circuit watching what seemed like every make and model of car furiously lapping and thinking I should be there.

Onelownismo 05-21-2013 02:26 PM

I'll be there. I waited too long to sign up for hpde, but I will be doing the hyperdrive event.

YOUCANTZME 05-21-2013 02:55 PM

Wouldn't miss this for anything...It's a blast!!

Tigger 05-21-2013 03:06 PM

I'll be attending. Just registered and will be doing the Hyperdrive session. Still need some real track experience and maybe some lessons would help. Can't wait! Anyone going up Friday night? I'll have to since I'm coming from the beach. If anyone wants to cruise up with or meet me along the way it'd make the drive much more better! ;)

YOUCANTZME 05-21-2013 03:24 PM

Man, that hyperdrive session sounds like fun!! Not sure if my stock oil cooler will hold up enough for a 20 minute session (being that it creeps up around 230 or so after going through the gears once or twice) and just exhausted my funds on the latest order of mods. :-( Oh well, always next year!

Tigger 05-21-2013 03:35 PM

Negative, Ghostrider! We'll all be zombies next year. Must go this year!

I'll have a couple people riding out there with me. Do you wanna join?

Oh, I'll definitely be there. Missed the past few years because I had to work. Work is slow now, so I'm planning on attending this one.....and being I only live 10 minutes from the track, no brainer!! Hope to meet some of you fellow Z owners! :tiphat:

If you go to HyperFest remember to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to explore. Almost every part of the facility is open to spectators so don’t be afraid to check out the different tracks. You can pretty much go anywhere unless a track official tells you otherwise.

Be sure to check out the Thunder Race at 4:15 p.m. on the Main Track. I am driving the only 370Z in the event and will be on track at 10:05 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:45 p.m.

Tigger 06-05-2013 10:00 PM

Unfortunately, due to work and the timing of a particular event on that Friday, I will no longer be able to attend.

However... I have NO LONGER ANY ticket available. Absolutely free! But please make sure you are available to attend as I would hope someone could benefit from this. All I need is a name and email address and Laura Cobetto will add you to the "will call" list and you can pick it up at the gate. First person to send me this info gets it! (Seriously, no BS... just a name and email. And no, I do not consort with the spamming types.) I will update this post when the ticket is reserved. Thanks. Hope the rest of you have a great time out there!

That is one terribly drawn map! Why does the Main track seem like an access road?

jspecb18c 06-12-2013 03:38 PM

I will be attending with the Mischief.tv crew and will be parked at their vendor booth. Stop by and check out the new shirt designs they will be selling along with other merchandise.

I'll be heading down as well. As of right now I'll be heading out early Saturday morning

YOUCANTZME 06-14-2013 07:03 PM

For anyone staying in the Martinsburg, Inwood or Winchester area.....if you plan on doing the night life scene, (plenty of strip clubs and bars around here) STAY OFF ROUTE 11 if you have been drinking!! They run checkpoints every weekend and troll that road non stop! Being that your driving "loud attention getting" cars....you'd be more apt to being pulled over!! Hate to hear of anyone getting a DUI. Hope to meet some of you peeps tomorrow!! Be safe!

Not A Good Weekend

Well Hyperfest did not go very well for me…

My clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder failed during my first session of the day. And it failed spectacularly. I went from normal shifting to having no ability to depress the clutch in one lap. Luckily (maybe the wrong word to use) I had this happen last year and I do know how to drive without a clutch.

So I limped her back into the paddock and jumped out of the car to see if I could make a quick fix. I noticed that my lights were on and thought I must have forgotten to turn the ignition off. So I leaned into the driver window and pressed the ignition button.

To my absolute horror my starter motor fired and my car began dragging me forward. How did this happen? Normally your car won’t start unless you are inside and have depressed the clutch pedal. There is a special switch to prevent this from happening.

But with a clutch cylinder failure the clutch pedal is stuck on the floor thus activating the switch…

Back to the action. I am desperately stabbing at the start/stop button and turning the steering wheel to avoid the two tire trailers in front of me. I am being dragged along in a busy paddock until my car finally runs into a concrete wall and stalls out.

So not only was my weekend ruined but now I serious damage to the front fascia. At least it happened in the paddock and insurance will cover it.

However, my wife was none too pleased and not very interested in spending any more money to address the clutch. My loss can be your gain. And I will be creating a separate post on all the forums soon. But I will give you first dibs.

I will be selling my track wheels with mounted Hoosier R6’s and one good spare R6 (18 x8 rims with 245/35/18 square setup). Plus 2 slightly corded R6’s (fine for autocross only). Also 4 aluminum hub-centric wheel inserts (replaced the cheap plastic ones) a bunch of lug nuts and 2 15mm spacers I have lying around.

http://www.the370z.com/members/resip...ire-sale-1.jpg

http://www.the370z.com/members/resip...ire-sale-3.jpg

Plus 2 very good 235/45/18 Blizzak LM22 tires and 2 225/45/18 Blizzak tires that would pass inspection but have serious camber wear on the outside.

I am willing to sell everything for $500 cash. Check out my album for more pictures. P.M. me if you are interested.

shadoquad 06-16-2013 09:21 AM

very sorry to hear that :(

MightyBobo 06-16-2013 10:46 AM

Oh ****! I'm sorry to hear that, RespIsa - that sucks! So you're getting out of the track scene completely now? Or are you selling the car?!

That track wheel setup is perfect for SOMEONE on this board...I'll see if I can find an interested party for ya.

ResIpsa 06-16-2013 10:55 AM

No. I am not getting out of the track scene. It's in my blood.

However, I may be done for the season until I get my clutch issue repaired.

And I had planned upgrading to a wider tire/rim setup anyway.

Phew, ok! Just making sure...

I'm running Proxes RA1's right now. 275 on 18x9.5" square. LOVE the setup. Not as sticky as the R6's I believe, but it's good for my driving level. One day, we'll run into each other at Summit.

Either way, there are people local who have been considering a dedicated track wheel/tire setup, cant see a better option than yours.

ResIpsa 06-16-2013 11:48 AM

Yeah it really sucked. It was one thing to have a mechanical failure ruin my weekend but to then have a freak accident in the paddock. The pointless damage to my car…the embarrassment…

Man, I could have run someone over or taken out some $100,000.00 race car. At least no one got hurt other than my badly skinned knee (from being dragged about 20 feet).

Yeah, definitely.

If it makes you feel better, when we were there a month ago, we visited the gift shop at Main where some event was going on. We park, get out, and here a loud KER-KLUNK - some dude didnt secure his car properly onto his trailer, and it rolled right off and fell a solid 2 feet to the ground. Saw him sprint to hop into the window and pull the brake before it went too far.

ZCarMan 06-16-2013 01:00 PM

ResIpsa, I'm very sorry to hear of the failure of your CSC that caused a potential catastrophy at the track. I am happy to hear you were not injured along with anyone else. Cars can always be repaired by flesh and bones is a different story.

I would think this is a major safety issue that Nissan North America would want to know about, considering this could have caused life threatening injuries in the worst of situations. Anyhow, glad you are safe and insurance will cover the damage.

I dunno, Jon - the clutch safety switch is pretty much universal across cars. The only way for the computer to figure out if it should start the car, is if the clutch pedal is physically to the floor. Otherwise, maybe they'd have to install a sensor into the transmission that detects when the clutch is actually disengaged? But I don't think a single manual transmission car has that. Nissan would just argue back that their safety device worked perfectly: it sensed the clutch was to the floor, and it started the car.

Honestly, as much tough love as it is to think about it, it really was user error, but it's one that almost any one of us might do, forgetting about that switch.

I tend to agree. That switch is there to prevent exactly what happened to me. The fact that it is now universal shows that this must have been a real problem in the past.

The real problem with our cars is that they have too much torque. If Nissan had only installed a weaker motor my car would have quickly stalled without me depressing the gas pedal!

Yeah, the ORIGINAL problem was people starting their cars without depressing the clutch - so you could argue that the problem was already fixed lol.

Lol to the second part :bowrofl:

ResIpsa 06-16-2013 06:53 PM

Bobo, have you had any problems with your clutch master or slave cylinder?

Z Stig 06-16-2013 07:06 PM

Sorry to hear that! I agree with everyone saying that its good that you nor anyone else were hurt! Sorry that the problems have sidelined your track effort for now, but I have a wife and understand your situation. Good luck with the sale. Do the wheels fit over the sport brakes?

I see your point. It does seem to me that there have been several people on this forum who have had failures of the CSC but nothing in terms of the dangerous situation that ResIpsa encountered. If anything, its a good reminder to anyone of what could happen in a similar situation.
