Place to get Oil Changes

Anyone know of a reputable place to get an oil change other than a dealer? I don't care if I have to bring my own oil to get what I want; I just want someone I can trust than knows what they're doing. Somewhere around Manassas is best for me.

Your garage!

Anywhere, really. Probably a place where you can watch the tech work would be best.

Come out to our Saturday meets in Fairfax!!!

Your Dealer

Your dealer is still the best place to have your oil changed...........

The reason I say that is the tech there has been factory trained to work on your Nissan. Outsiders and independents have not been factory trained to all aspects of your car. Now some of you can say what you want about the Dealership, but they still know your car better than anyone.........................

I don't have a place to change it myself, so I go to the dealer. So far so good, knock on wood... ;-)

Most techs I've seen working on cars for something simple like an oil change are often not even of drinking age... enthusiasts reading the forums know more about the car before it even hits the lots than these guys do after a year of working on them. That said, it's a freakin' oil change! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to empty oil and refill it... but there are plenty enough idiots out there (young AND old) who forget to tighten the bolt, forget to refill, etc.

Randy, I just suggested P-tuning in Manassas in another thread for a good speed shop. I don't know if they advertise specifically for oil changes, but they obviously have to do it as part of their normal service work, so give 'em a ring and see if they'll do it.

mspeasl 03-04-2010 08:17 PM

You may be correct................

You may be correct. Our local Chevrolet dealer use the area high school students that are in Auto Technology Class (fancy name for Auto Mechanics Class in my day) in the Oil change area under the supervision of an ASME certified Tech. BTW most of these kids have been motor heads since they could walk.

ducky 03-04-2010 11:07 PM

for those who take your car to the dealer..how much do you pay for an oil change?

RandyJamesA 03-05-2010 07:49 AM

Thanks all for the discussion. My take is that I've got better things to do than change oil myself. My experience with my Harley has been that you can find a certified mechanic outside of a dealership and save money, trust them more, and still get good service. On the other hand, my '03 F-150 gets oil changes and tires a Walmart, obviously not a good option for a Z.

On the same note, how's the experience with Sheehy Nissan? Are they competent?

I used to get charge like $15.00 to $20.00 for the labor in my old 350. I took the oil and filter myself and asked them for the empty containers back. ;)

Hi Lance,

I called the local dealer and they said about 74.00 to do the oil change

is this around what you end up paying at the dealer?

Thanks,
Jay

$85 I think using the Ester Oil they provide. They f'd my car up though last time, so I'm considering just having AAM do it.

Any oil you want. Or we could get Mobil, Redline, Eneos, even Motul. Labor is usually around $40 and you're in and out in 45 minutes.

jayl 12-07-2010 10:40 PM

Thanks Jon.

spinhead 12-08-2010 09:59 AM

Criswell Nissan charged me somewhere around $12 in labor. i provided the oil and the filter.

jayl 12-08-2010 11:48 AM

which OIL / Filter did you get?

is it suggested to keep using the same oil all the time?

Thanks,

spinhead 12-09-2010 08:35 AM

I'm been doing Redline 5w30 and a K&N filter. They don't seem to care.

jayl 12-09-2010 01:41 PM

cool, is there a local shop you get your OIL from?

spinhead 12-09-2010 03:31 PM

Amazon. I buy 12 quart packs so it's a bit cheaper.

jayl 12-09-2010 09:10 PM

thanks, is 5 and 1/8 quarts the right amount? I am trying to figure out if I should get 6 quarts or 5...

Thanks,
Jay

$20 sounds cheap to me. $12 sounds like someone gave somebody a reach-around. ;-)

$20 is nothing, especially in the dealer!

Kirkster 12-11-2010 08:47 AM

I do mine in my garage... And I know it gets done right...

FERRARI 12-11-2010 08:56 AM

Has anyone every taken their car to Valvoline ? Do they change the oil in a Z ?

Hm price seems to have gone up on Amazon since the last time I bought. Good call though.

eastwest2300 12-12-2010 10:35 AM

$75--$85 ouch... I think I'll be doing my own oil change. Just wish it'd warm up one more time, and I had a day off.. that combination right there is hard to come by right now. =)

Lt. Dan 12-13-2010 06:46 AM

Not trying to spam the forum or anything, but go to Walmart, buy some Mobil1... Bring your car to me, and I'll change it for 7.95 plus tax (comes out to $12.35)... Don't know how much longer the coupon will be out there, but I would definitely take advantage of it...

Dan

Jessobear 12-13-2010 07:07 AM

Lt. Dan, do you drive the Z with your magic legs?

Lt. Dan 12-13-2010 02:17 PM

Yea man, that's what the rev-match software is for!

dawankler 12-20-2010 08:33 AM

I bought my Z from Rosenthal Nissan in Tysons Corner and have gotten all of my oil changes from them. They promised me a year of oil changes when I bought the car, but the guy still gives them to me for free almost a year and a half later. If they finally ever charge me I'll consider it back pay and finally find someplace else at that point.
