Surfdog's 09 journal
I just ordered up some new race meat for the coupe.
Ordered these (18x11 15mm offset) with 315 R8r’s for test tires. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c4f7195851.jpg Currently I have square. 18x10s with Toyo RRs on there. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8321b7821e.jpg ...my trusty (and always a bit dusty) Z track day wheels. I’ll figure out during shakedown how to mix and match the wheels I suspect I’ll end up running 275s up front and 315s in back but it might go 275 Toyo RA1s square in the wet, and 315 R8r’s square on dry days. Well just have to experiment a bit. |
Sub’d. Sorry to hear about the troubles!
Just ordered a full long block from IPP.... this has be a little worried. Hoping that they make things right for you. |

It will be a bit before I can speak intelligently to my new tires. I loves the RA1s. I was actually a bit slower on my RRs.
The 315s might be a tad slower just due to weight differences from the 275s hard to say... a lot will depend on grip with my downforce I am learning a lot as we go. |

Just for fun, here is the stack.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...efd92b7649.jpg Can you say “meaty”?? These are 315s. In person they lead me to suspect that 275s in front will be enough. Putting those 315s up front seems like huge overkill. But we will see... |
DAMN that's alot of rubber
|
That’s what she... never mind.
Here is my Forza paint job mock up. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0112e3bb65.jpg |
So...you'll going to paint a red car, blue. What's your base color going to be?

No metallic and no buffing out or wet sanding the orange peel. because, you know... race car. This has to be as repeatable and fixable as I can make it. We'll be spraying OTO in the inside and doing a nice grey primer and guide coat to get her mostly straight. ps the photo above is just a prelim sketch off forza 7 my blue is less purple and much darker |

In other news the Z is finally going in to get her JWT valve lash set. (It came way off from IPP) as I’m going to have the front cover off and the cams out anyhow as well as redoing all the lash, I’m going to put on new timing chains and tensioning bits in there as well as upgrading to the JWT C2 cam (That I thought they put in the first time...)
... then retune which includes dyno runs on the EDC and a reflash of the VVEL motors etc. Sheesh! such a deal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
How far off is the lash?
|
Enough to rattle badly. I won’t have numbers til tear down begins.
|
Cold Spec is .012-14 if I remember right on the intakes they are all over but one is as much as .017. Exhaust cams are about .03 over spec in the worst case. Basically about 1/3 the valves are out of spec on both intake and exhaust side.
Mystery solved. I’m having it all redone starting today. IPP has said they will cover the repair. I hope they come through. This was a pretty egregious F-up from the machine shop they use. One valve had a few thousands under lash and that’s actually a bit scary. I’m with a pretty good tech. Hopefully he can get the lash sorted on his first go but there is a little trial and error that goes into this to get the buckets all sorted. Either way after bony J’s of pulling out my hair trying to get the Z back in one piece we are in the home stretch. Of course I still may have to reflash the VVELs and retune but... baby steps. |
Making progess. Even tho it's a major PITA. :shakes head:
|
I can’t wait to run around in it once we’re all tuned up.

Lash on JWT cams is 11-13 mills I had most at 14 and 15.
Lash on intakes is 14. Some were close, one was at 17. We’re getting there. The coupe has gone to my buddy’s shop for some pretty welds on my diff cooler and oil cooler. Also for a bit of help wiring in my oil and pressure gauges (my solutions were a bit ugly)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c1f8645203.jpg |

What's wrong with the gauge wiring. Too short?
|
No it more like I don’t know where best to tap in for my oil temp and pressure and how to plumb my best option for getting reliable readings. These guys build a lot of race cars and are pretty smart on that stuff. As I’m in for some welds and AN lime fittings their going to plumb me up while I’m there.

Great work!!
:yum: |
Well believe it or not after relashing the heads there was still some engine noise (less noise but still..) coming out of my motor so I tore it down again and found another problem. Can you friggin’ believe it!!?!
Z1s Short block is eating itself. According to two motor builders who have looked at it, either the wrist pins are too tight or the pistons are a bit undersized (or a bit of both I suspect). Anyhow after about 200 miles of easy break in (with break in oil) check out these totally trashed cylinders... the groves are deep enough to feel with your eyes closed. Definitely not normal at all. This motor wouldn’t last an hour at full power I suspect. The pistons are rocking with the wrist pins not “floating” in the cylinders on the oil as they should. Also notice the high carbon buildup from excessive oil blow by. That should not be there after only 200 miles of break in style driving. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6b4fa826dd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b8bbca472d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c1b892fbb0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...786de009db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d832dc59d8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...12fe42c604.jpg Sooo... I’ve pulled the motor (again... 3rd time) and sent Z1 their block back. They are deciding what to do about it. (They did send a shipping label so that a start) In the mean time as the motor is again totally apart, I sent the heads to MA Motorsports. Daelen there looked em over. He says the lash and overall head condition looks good now. (After relashing them into spec here in Denver). I figured a second very experienced set of eyes could not hurt before I bolt this f-er back together... hopefully for the last time. Ug. This has sucked. |
that sucks! Hope it all works out for you

Damn man, that blows :shakes head:
Hope third time is a charm for ya! |
You're having the worst luck with this rebuild. :shakes head:
|
Holy crap! Glad it’s looking like Z1 is going to make it right, hopefully that process has a positive outcome. If not, please post about it. I quit using Z1 a couple years ago. Hopefully their customer service has improved.
|
I hope so too. I’ve been a great customer for Z1 I hope they do what they can to make it right. Pitching in on my tear down costs and sending a rebuild gasket kit would be appreciated (I’m on my 3d teardown for this rebuild!!)

In other news. Lots of progress over here:

Z1 says all that cylinder wear is normal. They like how it’s built and are sending it back to me. They say they recommend I drop it back in and run it.
So in it goes. If it blows up I guess I’ll just drop in a Stock block. I’m out of ideas how to get this motor right. It’s been 9 months trying to rebuild and I guess I’m the to the point where I just have no idea how to get it right. I’m going to run it like it’s not FUBAR and hope for the best. I could have dropped in two Factory crate motors on what I’ve spent trying to get this build one running. Bummer. Or maybe it’s fine. It still sounds like a bag of nickels when it runs though. https://youtu.be/-s-qzpUA9aM |
