Custom front strut bar thread

Searched and didnt see one so since I just got mine done along with my wheels to match figured I would start a running thread for those who have painted, powdercoated, purchased, or had a one off made for under the hood. My wheels still have to go monday to get some custom free hand painting done on them over the powder. Everything was stripped, then chrome dipped to give the translucent look in the sun, then powdercoated with Stryker Orange with a touch of pearl added. Future plans are to get G3's and have the tubing powdercoated to match with some possible one off stripping done also. All said and done for strut bar, wheels, ink work, plus being bumped to first on the list ahead of 24 orders, $690. The pics dont really do justice for the depth of the orange plus being in the garage due to the rain and no sun hitting it to bring it out real well.

Don't like the wording screams douche

Other than that looks good!

Mr. Q 10-13-2012 02:11 PM

Fvckin classy indeed

Japanjay 10-13-2012 02:15 PM

It was meant more for a laugh. In reference to how you can get a 370z for much less than it looks and also the orange on blue. Kinda of an inside joke I guess. Had a trooped pull me over and commented on how it must have cost around $70k.

Take more pics this is a pretty sick color combo.

Japanjay 10-13-2012 07:39 PM

I will post some up when the sun decides to come back out so as to try and show the true color. By that time the wheels will have the finishing touches done too.

Mr&Mrs 10-13-2012 11:52 PM

Mine is currently being painted along with alot of other parts so cost im not sure what it breaks down to. I will post pics when I get it back.

LakeShow 10-14-2012 12:50 AM

Knicks fan?

Japanjay 10-14-2012 04:47 PM

Lol, nope. Dont really watch or keep up with sports. Only color I could think off outside of the 3 go to colors for the people with Montery Blue. Gold/Bronze, Black/Gunmetal, White. I wanted something that would go with the Blue but look different in a crowd of cars. Was tossing the idea of hi-def green, but didnt think it would go as well as orange.

Nice, curious to see what you did.

Mr&Mrs 10-14-2012 07:28 PM

Not as fancy as yours just color matching it to the car.

Is the strut painted or powdercoated from the factory? Just curious how a rattle can paint job would turn out on it. Has anyone done this, if so post a pic.

Japanjay 10-14-2012 09:28 PM

I would give a light scuff with some sand paper to help with the holding and then just multiple very light coats until it is even. But I got mine powdercoated for $60 so to me that is more than cheap enough to not waste a full day trying to rattle can and also it look perfect in the end. Not saying you cant with a rattle can, oh you can, but it takes the better part of a day if not 2 to get it even and looking professional, and odds are if you have never done it before it wont come out perfect the first time.

I kinda regret not getting a white Z. The infinite color combos is nice. The little bit of red pops nicely, and is the lettering vinyle or paint?

I don't remember if I used a vinyl sticker or stencil and paint, but in either case its under a powdercoat clearcoat.

Mind if I steal the hood latch idea from ya? Looks nice under the hood too. Guessing the wording is Powdercoating by Mike? What do you normally charge for the strut to be done?

axmea? 10-14-2012 11:31 PM

I like how it pops in engine bay. Your color combo is nice and straight out of the color wheel but what is written on that bar is not classy at all.

no, not at all, you can do that. It actually says Customs by Mike, which is my registered business name. I charge 100 for the bar.

If its quality automotive paint, you will be fine.

pfdaxe 10-16-2012 12:48 PM

I ended up painting mine. I used several coats of automotive high heat primer, paint and clear coat. Seems to be holding up so far. If it doesn't, I'll probably powdercoat. It didn't cost me anything since I already had all of the supplies from another project.

i also have monterey blue annd wanna do similar to what you did to your engine bay.
1. is ur strut brace powder coated or just painted?
2. who preformed the work?
3. how did you pain the engine color and what paint are you using?
4. how is it holding up?
5. did u apply clear coats as well?
6. how many coats?

lol please help a brother out!

i also saw that z1 motorsports sells powdercoated g3 intakes in monterey blue. with your color car do you like this idea or do youi think that the polished look looks better?

:tiphat:

tjlazer 11-09-2012 10:07 AM

I like that but kinda think along with the engine cover, it's a little too much blue...

Mr&Mrs 11-09-2012 05:38 PM

1) I had it painted
2) A Nissan painter that is also Lexus Certified
3) The Engine cover is also paint. The only thing I would do different is sand it smooth next time.
4) So far so good only about 30 miles so far though without heavy boost.
5) Yes 2 coats of clear
6) I had him paint a bunch of other items (Full Zele Kit/Fenders) so im not real sure.

I think you can do to much blue if your not careful. So if I were you I would keep some polished/black areas along with the MBlue under the hood.

I think its just enough, the pic kind focuses on the blue only. The polished piping and the CF covers (when I get them) will break it up nicely.
