Do you have another car to drive or is the Viper your only car?

If I only had the Viper, I'd be spending over $120 a week in gas. I have a '02 Ford Taurus for a beater.

I wish. As is = no chance in hell

I have the beater...just don't have $10k to throw away to fix it. I'll be having it flat bedded in the next week or two to have it diagnosed. Bad timing...but I have to kick out my roommate...so there goes $600 of spare income a month. On a positive note, my boss asked me about a promotion yesterday. If that happens in the next few weeks, the build may be a go.

Ryan! noooo...

Any smoke at all after those two trips? Was the oil level ok? Any leaks?

Ni55anPat 07-14-2012 02:25 PM

How many miles did you put on it after this?

I know in illiniois you have a very limited warrenty on a older/used car, state law.

No smoke. Oil level was fine. Oil pressure was fine. No prior symptoms at all.

I've put about 1200 miles on the car since I bought it April 13th.

Oh man, sorry to hear about your continued car troubles OP, best of luck sorting it out.

I thought the Viper was relatively reliable but who know's how the previous owner treated it

sfearl1 07-15-2012 06:06 PM

Ryan, what are your options at this point!? I honestly don't know what I'd do if I were in your shoes.

 So sorry to hear about your car troubles Ryan! I didn't take the time to research but doesn't the viper have an extended drivetrain warranty or some sort of protection that could apply to your car. It's only a 2006 man.

Please do keep us posted on the estimate and best of luck.

Wow, that really bites. I know how you're feeling right now Ryan but don't give up on the car hobby. I don't know too much about Gen 3&4 cars but I have read of guys getting the crank drilled for better lubrication. While this sort of thing sucks it gives you a reason to build the motor. Roe Racing offers some pretty affordable rotating assembly packages but before you buy anything you should take the engine out and see what is salvageable. Hopefully you can reuse the crank and no other parts were damaged by the contaminated oil. Wish I lived near you so I could help you pull the engine.

damn man.. I am really sorry to hear that.

any updates?

 Im so sorry bro, once you get it diagnosed if it is a common warranty issue I would be writing Dodge a letter. It does not hurt to try and get some sympathy parts from these car manufactures, and maybe just pay labor costs. It never hurts to try!

After finally waiting over a month, the car is getting towed in the morning. I'm excited, yet nervous, to hear about the teardown. I'm expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. If the crank is salvageable, I'm doing it BIG (heads, cam, headers, throttle bodies, and tune...aka 600+whp NA).

No extended warranty. It comes with a 3yr/36k mile warranty...being that it's an '06, the warranty is long gone.

I wouldn't say it's common...but when the Gen 3 motors do have problems, it's typically the #3 rod bearing. I just hope it wasn't enough to damage the crank. After driving 35 miles home with the noise, I fear the worst  That drive home could be a $6-10k mistake, but I was exhausted after a day of drinking and celebrating a friend's wedding.

Unfortunately, it's not a warranty issue. I've read this problem happening on Gen 3 cars with as little as 10k miles on them, but there are also Gen 3 cars with 50-75k miles on them without a problem.

Boost_lee 08-02-2012 01:18 AM

wish you the best outcome bro

theDreamer 08-02-2012 07:58 AM

Sorry to hear about this man, hope it is salvageable and you are able to go big.
